Don't get me wrong, I love my :PS3, but sony is just shooting themselves in the fucking foot.
If you haven't heard, the "Price cut" is more of a markdown... Apparently Sony dropped the $100 off to move the remaining stock of the 60gb model, and once that's done, they'll discontinue it, leaving the new 599 package...
Hopefully Sony gets enough bad press and rethinks their decision...... If not, they're fucking up big.

What Would Kevin Do?

Where'd you see that?
I thought they were making the new model the same as whatever the EU one has.... It has X amount of games that the BC doesn't work on, but patches fix that...
LOL, wow, Sony is really fucking up. They had something great with the PS2, it was no question the biggest console last gen in terms of library size and quality within that library. Now they have very little games (even for this time in release) and hardly any are worth playing, plus they've lost a good chunk of their exclusives.

You mean they are going to use emulation instead of actually packing in the Emotion-Engine chip, right? I haven't heard anything about them actually removing backwards compatibility so I'm curious.

They announced a $100 price drop for the 60gb ps3, and introduced an 80gb PS3, that comes packaged with Motorstorm, for $599.
A few days later, it comes out that they're not producing any more of the 60gb model, and the price drop is to sell off the inventory of them. So essentially, it's a price drop while supplies last, and then back to a 599 model.

Well, my slow Canadian friend, it's mostly that they are discontinuing the 60 GB model.
This isn't a price cut, it's clearance. They're getting rid of the 60 GB model, and selling only a more expensive model which has 20 GB more and Motorstorm as extras.
I'm not even sure why you're so fixated on the price.
Also, the PS3 is taking the biggest hit per unit of the three consoles. So no, the markup isn't insane.

How can you possibly expect Sony to outduel Nintendo in the handheld console market? I have a PSP and I like it very much and I think Sony has put out a good product. I have just as much fun with my DS. I like Sony at least attempting to make a name for themselves in a market that was pretty much taken over by another company completely.

Er, PSP has been heavily improving recently in sales. UMD was almost gone for movies, an now it is making a resurgence in sales and is being brought back to stores that quit selling them. Plus they announced a new PSP model. Explain to me how that equates to the PSP not doing good or the UMD being canned?
Sepholio

Also, in terms of consoles, the PS3 is lagging because it is the most expensive AND the hardest to develop for. Once a permanent price drop comes in and developers find easier ways to create software (which ALWAYS happens around the 2nd or 3rd generation of titles for a console), PS3 will take off. Most industry experts say tha PS3 will stay behind in sales and what-not until 2009-2010, then will blow past the 360 and Wii, and crush them horribly in the long-run.

This is the main reason I'll stick with Sony. Any company willing to lose several hundred dollars PER console is obviously producing a superior machine, trying to make their fans happier, and planning for the long run.
And don't give me that shit about how Microsoft has lost 1 Billion USD on the 360. I doubt they planned for their machine to be fucked up and full of bugs, resulting in them having to pay out the ass to repair all the damaged consoles. Or if they did plan on it, it means they knew they were marketting a shitty product and just released it to cash in on the market by being the first out of the gate.

Even before the problems, MS were losing cash per console sold.
In fact, Nintendo are the only manufacturer to be making a profit per console, including PSP. MS are maing a profit on the XBox division now though, the 360 has an attach rate of close to 6 games per 360 console owner.
Sepholio

Of course Nintendo is the only one making a profit. Outside of their amazing motion sensor technology, which I think will become very niche once people realize that the Wii really is going to have shitty software since nobody besides Nintendo is making good games for the Wii, they are selling an inferior product. The ONLY reason they are leading in sales is because they are super cheap compared to other consoles. Hell, they are cheaper than consoles of the LAST generation at debut by a ways, too.

As I've said before, I love my PS3, but it's not hard at all to understand why people don't want to buy one.
Essentially, you have a more expensive system, with a blu ray player, that so far, doesn't have a huge selection of games, and as of right now, not many exclusives that make the system a must have.
Graphically, while I have no doubt the PS3 has barely touched it's potential (Naughty Dog, for example, said that Uncharted, Drake's Adventure, taps only 30% of the ps3's potential.), so far, it has not been visually better than the 360.
Right now, if you don't want a bluray player, the 360 looks like the better deal (the failure rate is huge, but apparently Microsoft is trying to fix that.) If Sony kept the price drop long term, get a library of great exclusives, and utilizes more of it's potential, then maybe people who CAN afford one will be willing to spend money on it.

PS3 will be awesome about the time of the Nintendo 2Wii and the XBox 1080. The problem is, right now, all that technology isn't worth the cost. Sure, it's WORTH it, but you can't do much with it, so it's still really not.

Not to mention that losing money on the console is the standard business model. Not something new, or unique to Sony. that's like being loyal to the XBox because it has a disc system. Without the billions in losses, the 360 was still a hit every time one was sold. Even Nintendo didn't always make their systems to be profitable. That's a new deal.

Sony will be fine once it gets a decent base. Most developers seem satisfied developing for the 360, and then porting to the PS3. Once Sony gets a strong base (which hopefully the price "cut" will help), developers will start spending more time on games for the system.
I'm interested to see how games like MGS4, Uncharted, Killzone 2, etc, do, since they are being developed just for the PS3. I think those will show the PS3's power much more than the ported games will.

I can't help but think that we're forgetting that Sony had a 20GB PS3 and that that model is mysteriously MIA right now.
Could it be that whoever first "broke" the story fucked up in what they were discontinuing, or could it actually BE the 60GB that is being axed, or is the original reporter (not the guy who posted this) neatly tried to lie to fuck up Sony?
Something tells me they meant to say 20GB instead of the 60GB one.

Unfortunatly not, they already announced a while back the 20gb model had been discontinued.
http://ps3.joystiq.com/2007/07/14/ps3-60gb-is-not-a-price-drop-its-a-clearance-sale/
As the story played out on Friday, there were many people at E3 scrambling to get what the real story was and comparing notes on the madness we had heard the night before. Most conversations regarding the subject started with, "There's no way it could be true." But here we are -- if the 80GB model doesn't receive a similar price drop, we'll be stuck with a new package for the PS3 at the old price of $599.

In business, if you aren't making any more product and you need to get rid of the remain stock, you clearance it at a lower price.
Now I'm not sure if the system they're selling at the reduced price in favour of the better one can still play new games it puts out. Look out, Reggie and Pete! If Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves keeps it up he's going to take the lead as our favorite executive. First there was the fire sale incident, which you may have heard something about. Now there's this interview with Dagbladet TV. When asked why there's no 80 GB PS3 in Europe (at about 3:40 in), he actually responds: "You know, the difference between 60 and the 80 gigabyte is very small. We just feel that going up 20 gigabyte is not worth it. If you're going to double it, it's worth it. So maybe you'll see something a little bit later, but 60 and 80? Really not much difference."

GamePro speaks with Sony's Dave Karraker to get the company's self-examination of their 2007 E3 performance in addition to 60GB PS3 availability and Chewbacca cameos.
http://www.gamepro.com/sony/ps3/games/news/images/122489-1-1.jpg Chewbacca holding the new PSP at E3
"I suppose I would have to give us an 'A' for the press conference; I assume our competitors will give themselves an 'A' too, so I would hate to not follow suit," Karraker said in candid form. "I think we really listened to gamers on this one and showed them what they wanted."
By listening, the Sony spokesman was directly referring to the oft criticized high PS3 price and lack of attractive games. "For the PS3, those gamers said they wanted a lower price, so we delivered," he said. "They wanted more games, so we showed them nearly 30 of the 120 titles coming to PS3 this fiscal year.
"In regards to building excitement for the system, I think we delivered."
With regards to Nintendo's and Microsoft's conferences, the Sony executive stayed classy.
"I didn't see anything but snippets of the other two company's press conferences, so I can't really give a fair evaluation," Karraker said. "Sounds like Nintendo had some interesting news on the peripheral side. Microsoft made a nice buzz with Halo 3.
"At the end of the day, I can only judge our own press conference and if we achieved our goals... Did I mention we were the only company to have Chewbacca give their CEO a hug on stage? Can't beat that with ewok."
Indeed they were. On the topic of the newly discounted (http://gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=120888) now discontinued 60GB (http://gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=122329) PS3, Karraker had this to say:
"I am disappointed that news related to the 60GB in North America didn't come from our market. We have ample supply to last us for months and months, so any upheaval over the stop in manufacturing of this model is ill-placed. As we said on Friday, we won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated."
Hopefully "months and months" means until at least 2008.

When did my posts suddenly become your worst enemy. I'm not spewing THAT much "incoherency", am I? Oh wait, I'm the next Alienoid to you, which, for some weird reason, you hate for no reason, and here I thought you were on my side for alot of these things.
Here's the deal: Yeah, I wasn't caught up on the "discontinuation" of the 20GB model which, apparently, they did eons ago. I can't read anything on that site because I don't know that language. I'm sorry if I wasn't made aware of this way beforehand.
Doesn't mean I have any less of a brain than you have. I just have less of an ego than you have.
"Worst enemy?" Don't flatter yourself. Besides, Stickman's still slightly more of a moron.
I'm curious as to how actually reading information already provided in a given thread has anything to do with my ego. If you have a brain (Which I'm severely doubting right now), you have failed to use it, and to nick from Mark Twain: He who does not think has no advantage over he who cannot think.
You are, quite frankly, failing to make intelligent statements. You've made unfounded conclusions, as well as conclusions that go against actual information, and then defended them on the grounds that you were too stupid to actually think or reason or read.
The "Persecution" Deal is just another mark of an idiot. I'm anti-stupidity. Merely stop being stupid, start thinking, and criticism of your posts will stop. There is no animosity here, beyond what you have brought.
But seriously, you keep making dumber and dumber statements, and backing them up by pleading even more stupidity!
BTW, the months and months comment is unlikely, and that's once again just applying critical thinking.

One thing that makes me wonder, is that they had to have the removal of the 60gb in mind when they said they're hoping to sell 11 million by the end of the year.
Honestly, they know how well it's been selling at 599, so I'm wondering how much of that number is projection of the 60 gbs left, and how many of that number is how much they plan to sell of the new model by the end of the year.

They probably plan to sell the 60 GB model off entirely by the end of the year, and are banking on decreased costs moving them. At only 100 bucks more than the elite, it seems like more of a value.
This is just an educated guess.
They've already shipped something like 2-3 times the number of units sold, so there's a lot of wiggle room in those figures.
