I only picked up the disk because I don't want to have two drum sets at home. Simply as a guitar game, it's pretty fun right now. Also glad to see that the microphone from Rock Band works anyway, so that's an extra.
Only issue right now is that most songs that are supposed to be downloadable are not in the store, which is weird.
U-Warrior

The red snare drum doesn't work all the time. Sometimes it won't recognize anything and sometimes it thinks you're hitting the yellow cymbal, or activates star power.
Plus, the cymbals you have to hit almost dead center or it won't register.
Appently people have been able to fix this by using a different set of batteries thanthe pack-ins.

I'm liking the charts. They're quite fun. I dislike the onscreen display, IE the note counter, star power display, etc.. It all feels too insubstantial, like it's a beta display that they left in. I find myself forgetting I have Star Power because it's hard to see.
But it's a minor quibble.
U-Warrior
10-27-2008, 12:31 AM
Yeah, all in all, having much more fun with these songs, than with Rock band 2's on-disc content.
Hotel California is every bit as awesome as I thought it would be. Stranglehold and Do it again, are also stand outs. Plenty more too, and I've still got a good quarter of the songs to unlock, if not more.

Seriously, I highly reccomend getting at least the disc. Just a ton of really fun songs to play. Sweet Home Alabama is probably the most fun song I've ever played in a music game.
About 88% complete now. Got stuck on BYOB, but like RB 2, you can change difficulty whenever you want during career, without having to start over.
Also, Ozzy singing La Bamba is in my top 10 videogame moments ever.

The Hendrix set doesn't have it's own gig like the Tool one, it's the final 2 songs of a different gig depending on what instrument you're playing
Requiem
10-28-2008, 07:54 AM
Yeah. Tool agreed to license their music out as long as they had something to do with the game more than just that. They pretty much jumped at the chance to get Tool, since they haven't licensed their music out for anything for years. So Tool showed them some of their art styles and GH went with it and made their own stage area.

Some chords (more like almost all of them) kinda make you put your finger positioning in ways that are just... unnatural. :wtf:
Kalyx triaD

So far I've seen garbage on GHTunes (via web vids). Have these people any concept of 4/4 counts and... melody? Its really not that hard. Granted there's probably some great stuff I haven't seen, or great stuff in the works, but I really wanna see something nice (and that Zelda tune may have been the first decent track, but nobody thought to try and one-up the creator?). I know the mixer isn't super-deep compared to industry tools but it has just enough to make something nice - even if does sound like Midi.
I can't wait to get down on that mixer.
#BROKEN Hasney

It's too much of a hassle, I think people are just uploading a track for the 5gs points.

Dude, it just came out. To make a track, that fully utilizes all the tools and techniques in GH mix, would probably take longer than the game has been out.
Also, I've downloaded a bunch that are fun. GHtunes has a ranking system, so you can search for quality songs only. Those songs you saw probably only got 2 stars or so.
GH mix is pretty complex, and you're not going to see any really great stuff right away. You gotta just give it time. After exporing it thoroughly, I'm fully confident that we'll see some really great stuff in the future.
U-Warrior
10-28-2008, 03:22 PM
The zelda theme DOES sound like a midi, but that was the creator's fault. There are so many different ways to make it sound better than that. Adjusting effects, and volume could have made that track way better.

I did unlock an achievement for hard bass, but unlike the guitar (medium) one, I had to do all the free gigs, not just the final credits.
Doesn't unlock easier skill level achievements like RB and a lot of other games though :(

There are quite a few factors that swung me toward RB2.
a) Harmonix > Neversoft
b) All DLC is forward compatible
c) You can rip all of the songs (bar 3) to the HDD and use the in RB2.

Got the game. Something about the track list makes me think I'm sitting in some lame restaurant. You know when you play a song and think, "I'm probably not gonna play this by choice"? I got that feeling alot in this game. Still, I've spent the last 3 days in GH Studio and I can't get enough of it. I made a damn decent cover "The Game" and an off-note but okay "Bleed It Out". My first track is garbage with a premade drum line, but I'm compelled to keep it. I love the GH Mix. You guys got some stuff you wanna share? So long as it isn't a cover since Neversoft are bitches.

Bruce Springsteen is set to offer free downloads of ‘My Lucky Day’ and ‘Born To Run’ via a selection of video games, including Xbox 360, PS3 and the Wii versions of ‘Guitar Hero: World Tour’, to celebrate the release of his new album ‘Working On A Dream’.
The downloads will be made available for free starting from the album's release date of January 27, going to February 4. After that they will be available for $2 each, says Billboard.
The third single from the album ‘Life Itself’ is currently available for free on amazon.com. It is the second track from the album that has been given away for free via Amazon. The single ‘Working On A Dream’ was made available as a free download via Springsteen's official website last November.

I uploaded one of my first custom tracks, "Stop Crying". It's just one riff played over and over with differences in strumming. It's not done (missing two solo sections) and the ending drags on, but give it a play.
I dare not anger the Neversoft Gods and post my cover of "The Game" and "Bleed It Out".
EDIT:
You don't have to download it to play it! In a stroke of marvelous, the GH website actually streams customs in some kind of midi format. Here's my track:

lol If you are going to make a Guitar Hero ____, band specific game at least pick bands that are better. Rock Band got The Beatles and Aerosmith's been done. The rumoured Van Halen game would be a nice touch, but what would really make my day is them just dropping band specific ttles all toogether and focusing on great DLC/GH V/RB 3
Kalyx triaD
03-20-2009, 01:44 AM
Really, all the band exclusive games could have came in the form of DLC. Though Activision would argue that they develop games with the band's mood and feel in mind. To me, that basically translates to new logos on the menu screen (the Metallica game is going pretty far, though).
I imagine custom menu screens in the future, anyway, like CD cover art and such. I wouldn't put it past them.
RB3 and GHV should be very interesting, I have a feeling it'll be their rivalry's final battle. Something's gotta break, and I fear for GH. Do they really have anything left after clogging the genre in less than two years?

But who knows, maybe they're going to do a GH: Hendrix and save it for that.
I dunno where to put this. I played Guitar Hero Arcade at the mall here yesterday. I didn't even know they made it. Cost $1 to play. I don't know how long that gets you, because I failed out of the song I chose, which I would have 5* at home, with my comfortable guitar. Their guitar is more of an industrial type. It is insanely heavy. The strum bar is really stiff and takes some effort to strum. I know it's due to the heavy use it'll get. But still. Extremely uncomfortable. After looking online, they said it's based off GH3 if that means anything to anybody.
I will not be playing it again.

Is Funky taking the piss when he says this game is harder? Because I breezed through Hard and those charts are actually easier.
Did they water down hard or something?
Decent game. Love the customisation. If they threw that and the vocal style (That is, the no-tambourine, clap to star power, freestyle sections) into Rock Band, I'd cum buckets. Not too big on the open bass note. Can't really see it adding anything. BOOO-URNS on several tracks being pack-only deals. Got me a few songs, but I'm not going to spend a lot on GHWT when RB2 is the overall better game.
Not a big fan of the guitar. I went back to the strat after about a day. Still, considering it was 50 bucks for the guitar AND the game, I'll keep it and probably use it as a spare for when my ex plays bass. She hates the strat and loved the Les Paul.
Plus, it works with GHs 2 and 3 and I haven't had a working Les Paul in months. :D
Fignuts
04-26-2009, 12:13 AM
Thing I hate about the les paul is that there is one extra space at the top of the neck with no button on it. Throws me off sometimes. And the flat buttons on the strat areso much better for doing the cascading and zigzag notes.

I like the LP buttons because it's easy to slide my singers up and down them, whereas with the Strat, sometimes my fingers get caught. But the action's too stiff on them, and I don't like the strum bar on either GH guitar. Plus, I got used to the spacing on the solo frets, due to my fucked up shoulder.
I love the placement of the back button on the new guitar, though. Being able to activate Star Power by hitting the " bridge" with the blade of my palm a la palm muting is brilliant.

Also, RB2 is by far my favorite of the two, but Fat Bottomed Girls+Life in the Fast Lane and Hotel California+Old Time Rock and Roll almost make the game worth it by itself. I know only one of those is a disc song, but I can't remember the whole tracklist off the top of my head and don't want to make a comprehensive list anyway.
I really wish there wasn't so much redundancy, though. I seriously doubt that's the fault of either company, to be fair.

It was easier for me as well. I'm by no means a "great" guitar (bass) player, and I was able to beat the career on expert. GH is much more forgiving with note detection. I noticed that after playing GH for awhile, then switching straight to RB, I'll miss a lot of notes I would usually hit, due to RB's stricter detection.
I loved how I was able to change the note and flame colors. Too bad RB doesn't have that stuff.

I've only done Hard career so far, and currently only have Satch Boogie. I failed it last night, the first one I've failed or even got into red on sightreading. Satch Boogie may be the hardest song I've played in a while, but I'm not sure even that would make GH harder. And yeah, I noticed the more forgiving timing windows when I popped in GH:A and played it. Especially with the hammer ons.
Speaking of, the guy I spend the most time playing GH/RB with had a heart attack when he looked over at the strek of hammer-ons I was playing yesterday. It was on the times Square set, but I don't remeber which song. He's still relatively new to this type of game, so it's still mind blowing.
Meanwhile, I screamed because I missed two notes in the run, and therefore, I sucked.

That's what I mean about moving up to the next level, seeming impossible. When I first got the game, I said to myself, "alright I'll try and beat everything on medium, and then I'll just play on easy for the rest of my life.
Now I can beat almost every song in every game on expert.

Yeah, I still remember how exasperating Hard was on GH1. Now I can do all but the final tiers on expert for sure. Usually work up from Hard, but I went from "no way" trying to step up to hard to "no problem."
My biggest problem, really, is keeping streaks. Which always used to fuck me in the HO/PO sections, because you miss one note and you have to strum again, and whatnot. These days, I can at least recover fast enough to not fail when I screw the pooch.
Fignuts
04-29-2009, 12:11 AM
I can keep a streak until I notice I have one. Then I lose my focus because I get to worried about keeping it, and end up losing it. No matter how hard I try to just calm down and play. So I don't even care about them anymore, as they are an exercise in frustration.
Also, I can't play hard anymore. I've gotten too good at expert. To the point where I don't need starpower for anything but the most difficult solos. And for me, when I got to that point, I started noticing the speed difference, as well as the skipped notes alot more.

Apparently Lou is harder in Hard than in Expert because of the note layout. There are more notes in Expert, so when you lay on the attacks, he fucks up way faster and fails out in a hurry. In Hard, less notes = faster recovery.

LOL yeah, I'm with you on the missed notes at least. One thing that GH/RB has done for me is increased my capacity for critical listening to a song. I'm a terrible sight reader, so I play music based on what I hear. And so I started noticing a lot of discrepancies....

On May 7th, virtual rockstars will take the stage with three free tracks in the Ferret/Metal Blade Track Pack. Fans can download The Devil Wears Prada’s “Dez Moines” two days after the launch of their newest album, With Roots Above and Branches Below. Joining “Dez Moines” are “On Broken Glass,” off Chimaira’s April release, Infection and “Grave of Opportunity” from Unearth’s 2008 album, The March.
Coming to Guitar Hero World Tour on May 14th, the Pop Rock Track Pack features P!nk’s #1 hit single “So What,” which landed her a GRAMMY® nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Having reached the peak position in various charts globally and risen to the top-10 in countless others, OneRepublic’s “Stop and Stare” joins “Everything’s Magic,” the first single from Angels & Airwaves’ most recent album, I-Empire, to complete the Track Pack.
On May 21st, Guitar Hero World Tour’s global music library will continue to grow with three additional tracks from some of Europe’s greatest bands. The fifth European Track Pack sees Swedish Metal band In Flames make their return to Guitar Hero with “Disconnected” from their 2008 album, A Sense of Purpose. Alongside In Flames is French rock band Housse de Racket with “Oh Yeah!” and Cody ChesnuTT’s “Look Good in Leather,” popularized through various commercials in the UK and Germany.
The Pop Rock and fifth European Track Packs will be available on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft for 440 Microsoft Points and on the PlayStation®Store for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system for $5.49. All songs in the Track Packs will be released as downloadable singles for Xbox 360 for 160 Microsoft Points, PLAYSTATION 3 system for $1.99 and Wii™ for 200 Wii Points each. The Ferret/Metal Blade Track Pack will be available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace for Xbox 360 and PlayStation Store and as downloadable singles for Wii at no cost.
Free songs are cool but other then In Flames the rest are a major MEH.

Guitar Hero 5 News:
I really don't wanna be the one who makes yet another GH-related thread.
Credit, Kotaku:
Guitar Hero 5 will let up to four players rock out on the same instrument at the same time. That's four guitarists or four microphones and yes, even four drummers.
The game will also let you mix and match willy nilly what instruments you want to play as a group, so you can set up the instruments you want, and only the instruments you want. The four-player drop-in, drop-out support is available in all modes of play, even career.
The game's new Rockfest mode lets four players play in a variety of head-to-head modes online or on the same console. As players go through the song the difficulty adjusts based on how you play. You drop down a level for every third missed note and jump up in difficulty for every 20 notes you land in a row. The player with the most points wins.
Of course, the driving force behind any Guitar Hero game is its soundtrack. This one will launch with a nice selection of songs including music from Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Vampire Weekend and Johnny Cash.
The game will let you jump right in without worrying about menus or unlocking songs and all previously available downloadable music will be playable on Guitar Hero 5.
The thing about four instruments of the same type is the stupidest shit I've heard coming out of game development. Maybe they're on to something but so far it sounds like a idiotic idea.
Yay for DLC being supported. Rockfest seems cute, might train up some casual players into Expert. Other than that it's pretty thin news. E3, I guess.

IGN:
May 18, 2009 - Last week Activision accidentally let loose a press release with a bunch of details on Guitar Hero 5. The release was retracted, but not before we could learn some fun facts about the next iteration of the music game that just won't stop. One of those details is that your previously downloaded tracks from Guitar Hero World Tour will be compatible with part five, and they will be retrofitted with all of five's new features.
Today Activision sent the same press release out again, but we noticed one caveat: a limited number of downloadable songs from Guitar Hero World Tour will not be compatible with Guitar Hero 5 or receive the upgrades. When contacted by IGN, Activision could not clarify exactly which songs will be excluded.
We'll have more on Guitar Hero 5 leading up to E3.

Most importantly, there are only three full priced games. RB1, 2, and TB:RB. None of the GH:Band discs thus far should have been full priced, and I'm pretty sure GH:VH won't. Throwing in Smash Hits (Which I think will be worth it, but totally should have been DLC), and there's a shitload of full priced games coming out.
As it is, I got GHA when it was grossly discounted, and once the others are marked down, I will, too. Smash hits is the only one I'll buy new, and only because of the sheer number of songs I want. Maybe GH5, depending on the set list.
I just hope people get sick of it. I like the rock band model, so far. Toss in more DLC integration, and the game is practically perfect. I'd like to see activision shift that way, but as long as the spinoffs sell, there's no reason to.

I dunno, already own it for Wii and am kinda losing interest in the whole "music games" thing, esp for the $200 or so it'd cost to get all the ish for a new console.

Deals like that take time, and the ownership of Michael's library has been debated (Hence a court decision). Then they have to mix and chart the songs. Even a rush job could take a couple months.
Expect Guitar Hero: Michael Jackson by Christmas, though. ;)

I would have figured that getting Beat It in GHWT that they'd have gone to the effort of putting together a deal like with Hendrix where there is a track pack to follow almost immediately after. I mean, not every Michael song is suitable for a band game, but he's got some tracks that would be great for this sort of thing. Some of them would be a little on the easy side, but they'd still be fun I think. Off the top of my head:
-Dirty Diana
-Black or White
-Give In to Me
-We've Had Enough
-Rock With You
-Don't Stop till You Get Enough
-The Girl Is Mine ft. Paul McCartney (probably never gonna happen tho)
- This Place Hotel

I think most songs would work off the fact that it's MJ, 'gameplay-friendly' tracks or not.

I realize, but just going on the music alone, it would have been a great pack had they taken advantage of Beat It making the cut.
As for planning, it is Activision...

1 good long rental is all I'll need for GH5.
Now watch them have awesome DLC for GH5 and then I'll have to buy it. :(
Maybe that's why they're giving us crap for World Tour, so they can have the real good DLC for GH5 to boost sales.

Nah, all GH games are on my price drop list from now on. It's not less than $30, I don't give a shit.

This guy on the GH forums made a good point.
Rock Band style is releasing tons of DLC, and some games.
Guitar Hero style is releasing tons of games, with some DLC.
Free tracks are cool I guess. Getting Dueling Banjos, hopefully it's free too.
