The sequel to last year's summer hit Transformers will be called Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen.
The new title was revealed by producer Don Murphy on his message forum.
Director Michael Bay informed MTV that the sequel will not end on a cliffhanger.
He said: "You know how those sequels they do the second one so you go see the third one? [Transformers 2] is it. First one was just introducing, setting up stuff, so we can go a lot further. Let's just say [this] is not a lame sequel."
Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro will star in the sequel, along with franchise newcomers Isabel Lucas, Rainn Wilson and Matthew Marsden.
Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen is scheduled for release on June 26, 2009.

Michael Bay movies are really a throwback to the days when movies used to be really long but contain an intermission to get up and stretch a bit, except these contain so much exploding shit that the "intermission" needs to be at least a year for the average person to collect his bearings. Now that's film making!

I WAS GONNA POST THE OFFICIAL THREAD TODAY!!!!
Anyway; they're filming now for a Summer 09 release. Autobot Arcee is confirmed as a motorcycle (no surprise there) and there will be a transformers based on an ice-cream truck and a huge Blackbird jet. An Audi R8 was also seen being chased by the good guys, take that as you will. There may be as many as 10 TFs on both sides, and rest assured Soundwave will make it in there with his most popular minions Laserbeak and Ravage. No; he will not be a damn strereo, get over it.
I've been up and up on the news and this thread will be my vent spot. Don't worry, I despise spoilers and if I run into one (like I did two days ago, damn!) I'll spare you the jist.

First of all, I object to that. Transformers does in fact have subtext, it's just that sometimes it's paper thin and shitty.
Additionally, The Fallen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallen_%28Transformers%29) refers to a rather obscure character in the Transformers universe, and since he does have a connection to Unicron I shall now go and masturbate.

I highly doubt the movie will so much as reference Unicron. It just wouldn't work at this stage of the movie franchise. Yes I know about the Fallen, and Hasbro's recent lock of the name. Yes I know about their relation to Unicron. Yes I freakin love the concept of a planet sized TF. But no, I don't think he'll work at all in live action, especially with how Bay set up that universe in... believability (can't believe I said it).

The would revenge would imply that the character would have been introduced by now if that was going to be the case. They're probably just dicking around people who actually know this obscure fact.

Well, he could be out for revenge for something that happened before the movie.
I'm not saying you're wrong, just pointing out the obvious way that it could still make sense. Could, but probably won't.
However, since we're out to make a Trilogy here....

As long as he fucks right off with the "superzoomedinblurowtfisgoingonovision" it could be a good movie. I still can't believe the massive balls up they made with barricade in the first movie, on his way to the end battle then never appears. Plenty of people were saying it was a large editing error with others saying they just wanted to keep barricade around for the sequel. If they did why didnt they just cut the scene where he said he was en route with the other decepticons?
The decepticons really need more screen time this time around, last movie you just seen small glimpses of them and nothing more.
But yeah, as long as he cuts back on that zoomed in shit i will enjoy it, too many of the fight scenes in the first it was hard to tell wtf was going on, that and prime geting his ass handed to him in the final battle with barely any offence.

The first one was easily Michael Bay's best movie, which isn't saying much, but it was good. It wasn't lifechanging or cinematic art, but a lot of fun. I liked it a lot, and I have pretty much always hated Michael Bay movies.
This one looks like it's shaping up to be cool, but it has the potential to suck really bad. If they focus in the wrong direction it could become an overdone or unoriginal sequel, and fall back into the probability of being just another terrible movie.
It also has a chance to be really entertaining, if it takes what worked in the first movie and goes further with it.
I hope the second happens.
The first one, in my opinion, was crap. Great effects, good acting, the transformers themselves were great, but the story just didn't feel right. I hope that this will be one of the rare cases that the sequel is better than the original, but I sincerely doubt it.

From one of the writers:
* With many of the Decepticons being CGI, there is more freedom to add scenes in post-production. Adding extra scenes with Transformers is currently under consideration.
* As a follow-up, Roberto said one extra scene being considered was director Michael Bay's idea with Bay saying, "You and the fans are gonna love this..."
* Starscream's character will be more similar to his Generation One self.
* Roberto states that Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura's comments in Empire that there are around 40 robots was not an exaggeration.

Starscream is a little bitch, he should be act like a little bitch. Plus he was never second in command, Soundwave and Shockwave both had higher ranks than Starscream. Soundwave was obviously Megatron's right hand man, while Shockwave was left in control of Cybertron. Starscream was air commander at best, but sometimes he would take cues from Thundercracker and Skywarp.

That's not the issue. You missed the point. Why the fuck would they want a radio to be a character in a movie? Where's the sense in that? Let's have this cumbersome, boring, trivial object be a character in our movie.
Yea, I think people would rather see a jet, seeing as it can get from point A to point B in a manner other than being carried on some gangbangers shoulder.

A kalyx said, that's just his cybertronian form. His earth frm is some sort of satellite thingy. Which I'm ok with, since he still has ravage, and the awesome voice. He would have worked as a casette player 15 years ago, but this is 2009. Some changes have to be made. That combined with the reported old school portrayal of starscream is making me a fan of this already.

I'm convinced that the fanboys of the world have gone soft. I just hope the movie has quality. The interesting nature of the robots hasn't been comprimised.
As we were talking about in the GI Joe thread, I don't know why anyone would have a problem with changes as long as the basic ideas are kept in order.
So, when Transformers are new outlandish designs, rather than old outlandish designs: no harm. It's an update, and a freshening for the sake of translation to film.
Let's be honest, jets and fast cars lend themselves to an action movie more than tape recorders and volkswagens.
When what makes the material compelling is utterly ignored, then there's an issue.
I'm pretty sure Transformers still features a range of different cool shit transforming into other cool shit, with colorful and diverse characters.

What are YOU talking about? Just because he was a loud mouth backstabbing asshole doesn't mean he can't kick ass too. He was powerful enough to be second in command of the decepticons, ffs.
And he was dangerous in a sneaky sort of way, to Megatron. To the autobots, he was dangerous in an ass kicking sort of way.
Most badass scene in the frst movie was when starscream tore the shit out of those jets. It's great if the rumors are true about his personality being like the cartoon, but I hope he doesn't lose that badass factor from the first one, because he should be powerful, as well as an asshole.

I mean his name alone is badass. Starscream is the most badass name ever. I even made a thread on this, and no one could come up with a name more badass than starscream. It stands to reason that he would have to be something of a badass, at least in combat.
Jeritron
02-02-2009, 05:28 PM
Starscream is such a badass name, and although he had a small role in the first one I thought he was portrayed awesomely.
I also thought his escape, and surivival was so in character, and will be enhanced in this next one.
Again, not everything has to be touched on in the first, or even second film. They're developing a franchise here, and I thought the simple focus of the first movie was the right move. It paid off.
Now, they should ratchet it up another few notches for the second act. It looks like that's what they're doing.

BDC, I think you're being a stickler for details and nostalgic things, which if you step back and look at logically and thematically, are perfectly acceptable and sometimes neccesary to update.
The basic things that should be there, are there.
Now I don't doubt you're a bigger Transformers fan than I am, but I also don't think you're looking at this all as reasonably.

Why don't they just re-release the Unicorn movie.
I can honestly deal with them updating the cars that everyone is. I hate the look of the robots.
Now if they made Starscream the leader of a pack of jets such as Thundercracker and Skywarp, and maybe even the coneheads, and he was a classic heel where he would have them do all the fighting then come in and kick 'em while they're down, that would be awesome.
Jeritron
02-02-2009, 05:38 PM
Next you're going to ask for Dinobots and "You Got The Touch". Some things are better left in the 80's cartoon.
Here's a suggestion of mine though. They're defintiely going to get a trilogy out of this. I hope this next movie is the dark second act.
I think heads should roll. Deaths. To be honest, I think it'd be awesome if they somehow killed off Optimus, or got us to think they did, for his triumphant return in the third movie.
That's just how you need to structure a trilogy. Things need to be shaken up in this second movie, and things need to get dark before they are resolved. I hope they have the balls to go that way.
BigDaddyCool
02-02-2009, 05:40 PM

Starscream was always a kick ass motherfucker. When Autobots saw that jet, the ran for gotdam cover. When Megatron Killed Brawn, who's hand did he jump into? Starscream. The only truly ledgible fight scenes in the movie was Starscream's decimation of the fighter squadron. His friction with Megatron endeared me to him. I have a problem with authority.

I don't what a complete nostaliga movie, it is just they could have done a lot better keeping orignal themes, while having a modern movie. Plus, lets not kid ourselves, the first one while being a good blow 'em up movie, was awful for basic story telling, plot, and just about everything but special effects, the act was only decent at best. I mean seriously, with as bad as it was, they should have had more nostagia just to trick people like me.

It could have been a lot better, that is all I'm saying. For example, instead of making Bumblebee Sam's protector, they could have made Sunstreaker his portector and he could have been a yellow sports car because that is what he is. Thus making it an easier pill for people like me to swallow.

Imagine if the Fallen is the biggest baddast guy in the movie, spends most of his time just ripping shit up only to be finally defeated by a massive push from human and Autobots alike. Imagine that during the credits, we fly throw space, past planets and other stars and the like and we zoom past a very familier gray ring. Then a very familier yellow horn. Then finally... a very familier gaping maw of destruction and death that swallows us up to take us to black.
That, my friends, is how you set up Unicron for the final movie.

I've seen what I believe is the near final render of The Fallen and Devastator. The Fallen is majestic and probably terrifying when he's revealed to scale. He's seems to transcend Cybertronian aesthetics for, as I stated when I saw the toy, something out of Stargate.
Devastator is a multicolored mish-mash of construction vehicles that could only be fucking huge, especially since he's made up of those huge Earth mover types. He's a disaster movie on two feet, I can't imagine him not raising the stakes by his presence alone.

This is gona be confusing for people that aren't into the cartoons, we had "devestator" (brawl) in the first one geting fucked up now in the sequel we have something by the same name but looking totally different.
Thats assuming of course they actually keep the name devestator.
I dont get how that wheel thing was only one of the constructicons, if thats just one (and it looked to be 1.5-2.5x the size of prime) id hate to see how large the fully assembled devestator is. :wtf:
The decepticons badly need mroe screen time to develop their characters more, i think that would be more interesting than listening to labeouf say "nonononononononononnnonononononno" like he does in every fucking movie he's ever been in.

Common sense even, Bay never set out to rewrite the mythology.
None of these directors ever do, it's just certain people make them out to be. When in doubt, go back to source material - problem solved. Michael Bay makes entertainment. He's not going for any Oscars here. It's going to be darker, more violent and bigger than the first one, and I for one am very excited about it.
Everything can't be "The Wrestler," you know?

Michael Bay does not "make entertainment". He produces well. His movies always have good visuals -- when he's producing. He has no idea what makes a decent script or how to direct anything.
And besides, "The Wrestler" -- which I haven't seen -- IS entertainment. Any movie that's good is entertaining. That is to say, it doesn't have to be mindless drivel to be entertaining: it has to make you happy that you watched. And a sloppy sequel to a sloppy movie doesn't strike me as entertainment. If that's what you call enticing, then that's great. But bad is still bad.

It's a lot easier to get excited when you are going solely for the giant robots, and not for great plot development.

Alan is right about one thing. The Wrestler (and films with GREAT movie status that were implied) are entertaining. I don't think anyone claimed otherwise about better films.
I disagree with the rest though.
When someone says "Transformers is entertaining", it doesn't neccesarilly mean that greater films aren't entertaining too. They are. Perhaps moreso.
It's not so black and white though. It's not like only great or well above average movies can be entertaining. Their level of brilliance is what distinguishes them as great. But there is also such a thing as "good" and "pretty good", or "above average".
It's not as if there's only high art, and then everything else is garbage.
Just because a film isn't high art, doesn't mean it's garbage. Not every movie sets out to explore the human condition or move the art forward. Some just set out to thrill, or entertain.
There is such a thing as good movies that don't hold a candle to great ones. Subtle levels my friend. It's the essence of criticism and your own enjoyment. The sooner you realize this about the movie industry, the better it will be for you.

I just read that article that Kalyx posted. I agree with it to a degree, but I think, to a degree, the problem is more than just taking a random game and giving it a Hollywood ending and making it so the gamers hate it and the masses are still not interested.
Compare original Punisher and original Captain America from a decade or more ago to your Spider-Man and your Dark Knights of today. What changed? We went from okay movies to record breaking box office hits. Even graphic novels that people have never heard of (Watchmen) are getting made. Not saying every comic movie has or will be a smash hit, but it is no longer "oh, a comic movie? Eh." They're a legit deal.
So basically, what happened with comics needs to happen with video games for there to ever be a "good video game movie" that pleases the masses and the fans. It would probably be Metal Gear Solid or GTA because those are two of the most ubiquituos. Games are sophisticated enough now that you really shouldn't need to do anything to them plotwise or even much visually (though I could see why they did what they did with Doom, because having just one guy going aroung fragging monsters would have been boring).

Superhero movies made the jump thanks to two things. One was special effects allowing for them to be possible.
Another was the first Tim Burton Batman, allowing them to be darker and more "serious."
They came a long way from there, but it was a huge breakthrough at the time.
Video game movies have the effects at their disposal to be realized on film. That's not the problem.
The problem is they need a Batman, or Xmen like breakthrough to start the trend. What franchise has that potential both in terms of popularity and depth of story?
I honestly don't know.
This leads back to my argument that games can never compare or easily transform to movies because they lack the same storytelling priorities. Comics are about telling stories visually, and so are movies. Key word:telling.
Video games are about involving the "viewer" as a player. They're not designed, at least fully, to be thematic and deep. The storyline can be strong, but at the end of the day it revolves around facilitating interesting interactive situations, and exciting things to shoot or race from. You are not being fully told the story. There's less authorship. The player takes control at some point.
It's not the same.
Maybe something like Halo could really break the glass ceiling, if the entire premise was gutted and written for the screen and injected with some thematic elements. It has to be something of that cultural level, helmed by someone like Peter Jackson or James Cameron. Nothing less will suffice. I don't see how anyone can expect a second rate franchise, directed by a second rate director to get over on any meaningful level.
It HAS to be huge, and handled seriously by someone who is concerned with making the best possible movie with the basic source material. If they try to follow it too closely or play to fanboys, it's gonna be a video game cinematic in movie form and that has sucked.
The problem with video game movies is that they're made like video games. It's not about characters and themes.
The superhero genre took a huge boom after 9/11. Spider-Man (2002) was the beginning of the trend. In a world plunged into uncertainty and villainy, it's no wonder that people began taking more closely to stories about people who had the power to save the world.

Some of the best video games don't -need- to be movies, as they practically are, and they make just about as much as those box office hits.
Jeritron
02-26-2009, 12:47 AM
I agree with that, Fox. My friend actually wrote his film theory paper on it. The only thing is, the studios began buying up all the movie rights and planning the productions after Xmen, and before Spider-Man.
Spider-Man and the post-911 reaction obviously helped the success of the films, but it had started anyways.

The problem with video game movies is that they're made like video games. It's not about characters and themes.
This is true. If you made Solid Snake a legit hero or the guy from Vice City a legit...well he didn't have much character.
I see what you're saying about games and yes, in games there is usually a test of repetitive skill rather than an involving story. I would hope to cull games that are on the more involving story end of things. There are plenty out there. I think what will really hurt them though is the lack of awareness. Video game movies don't tend to get marketed that well (probably because they are already doomed) so even if somebody wanted to see or rent House of Dead, how would they know? That may change, as a lot of games are played online. I really think that is changing the way people play games, so as the medium evolves it may have long-term effects in other areas of culture, but that is speculative.
I'm not saying that it would or should happen very often. I just think there is a way to reconcile what the public would watch and what fanboys expect.

David Hayter has an MGS script, but for whatever reason they're not biting. That to me is insane - what better guy to consider than the one who has so much experience on the game plots, and is a good screenplay writer himself?
I think Mortal Kombat was a really decent videogame movie, though it didn't kick off a trend. Resident Evil was also good, then great when compared to the latter films.
The genre has a long way to go before it hits TDK levels of polish and success. Maybe a generation away even.

Looks like they responded to people not liking bumble bee's voice even though he had 2 short sentences in the first movie.
Ultimately from a stroyline point of view its a dumb decision, in the first movie frenzy got his whole body regenerated by the allspark just by being near it, yet bumblebee was holding it and it obviously didn't help him with his vocal problems, or later when he had his legs bown off and he was holding it.

Yeah, Megatron's a Cybertronian tank now (with a bulkier, badass robot form to go with it). The reason is slightly pretentious... Spoilers:
When the Constructicons locate Megs at the bottom of the sea, they repair him with treads presumably from the Constructicon with a crawler-vehicle alt. form. They also donate parts of their spark to bring him to life. Essentially he's reformatted, and most TF fans get that because it's a major event in TF lore. The problem is they're not gonna call him Galvatron because the non-TF raised fan may get confused. But we know better so just replace anytime they say Megatron with Galvatron. And he has his arm cannon now.
