During Nintendo's keynote address, the company carjacked the audience's attention, announcing that Grand Theft Auto is coming to the DS. Titled GTA: Chinatown Wars, little is known about the game, save for that it will feature a new game engine, characters, and the series' standard sandbox-style gameplay.

And that it'll suck.

Theres a small chance it may be good, the DS has shown to have pretty half-decent graphics with certian games (ie. Phantom Hourglass, Ninja Gaiden DS), course knowing nintendo they'll fuck with the violence content in the game to make it more "casual"

RE4 was on Wii.

At most Nintendo will have them tone down the language, but RE and some FPS games are about as violent as GTA and made it on Wii and DS.

Very true (considering Manhunt 2 as well), theres still hope then.

Yeah, I'm sure it'll be as violent as any other GTA. The Wii has Re4, Manhunt2,No More Heroes and a really violent game called Madworld is on the way so violence wont be toned down.
The only two worries I can really think of is how a 3D GTA could be done on the DS. I'm not sure on the technical side of the DS like it's capabilities but I've always thought it was a bit better than the N64 in terms of power and graphics. Is that right?
I can't shake the feeling it's going to be a bit cramped for a GTA unless it turns out to be 2D which I think wouldn't be taken well by players.

My other worry is controls. No control stick, just a d-pad. Might make it a bit difficult to control your guy/car unless they use touch screen controls which hasn't always worked in the past.

I'm looking forward to the game but I am a little cautious.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is being developed by Rockstar Leeds, the same team responsible for the two PSP Grand Theft Auto games. Rockstar Leeds was once known as Mobius and worked extensively on the Game Boy Advance platform, creating the impressive Max Payne conversion for Rockstar nearly a half decade ago.

The team will be recreating the GTA experience on the Nintendo DS, utilizing touch screen controls in the open-environment design. The website reveals that the game will also feature online support, an option that never made it into the PSP versions of the game.

Don't tell me their going to have you controlling the character w/ the stylus... it may have worked for NG DS, but I don't think it will here.

The latest issue of the US magazine Nintendo Power features a report on Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

The new story will, like the console versions, be a free-roaming game, enabling you to travel around Liberty City completing missions and mini-games.

As for the missions, they are designed for shorter periods of play and if you fail you'll be able to jump straight back into the action. There will be Touch Screen controls but you'll aim with the control pad and there is auto targeting with R button. The visuals are cel-shaded and the action viewed from an isometric viewpoint.

Other than that, it seems to be what you'd expect from a GTA game with radio stations, a 24 hour clock, real-time weather effects, a wanted system and loads of stats to keep check on. You can upload your stats to the Rockstar Social Club via Wi-Fi.

Not too sure about the camera or the controls. It's still a bit too sketchy on details to make a decision as to if it could be worth paying attention to.

Well, at least they're doing isometric instead of a TPS.

Doesn't look great, but most DS scans never look good. I'd say this game will look ok once it's released

This looks a lot better than the first two I posted

Actually those are sexy shots. Not PSP sexy, but decent for the console.

Funny, I dont see a weapon slot, an ammo counter, or anything of the sort.

Leave it to Nintendo to take the fun out of GTA

Uh, you know that there is a second screen that could be showing that, right?

Oh shut up, I dont own a DS ok.

And why wouldn't the health bar and body armor bar be up there too?

That what you're seeing could be the top screen and the weapons could be on the bottom screen so you can select them on the touch screen. It's how Metroid Prime works.

That's the best shot of it, but the mobile phone signal part worries me. No more being called all the time I hope :(

You do know DS stands for Dual Screen, right? ;)

And yeah, the game looks pretty decent for the DS. It looks almost like a mix between GTA 1/2 and the later GTA games. I may just buy this one. I'd have to see some gameplay footage first, though, to really make a decision.

I think that's just because it's larger in comparison with the action screen. Doesn't look much easier to me.

Wait...I understand not owning a DS, but how do you not know it has two screens? Short of being Amish, and if you are you need to explain your internet usage, how the fuck could you have missed this detail?

On the flip side, Terran's Wrong. DS got its name from the term "Developer's System." "Dual Screen was a name applied by the general public after the announcement. People assumed because it was called DS and had dual screens....

Kinda like the DVD.

All I can find regarding "DS" is this: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/ds/faq.jsp#ds

They say it can stand for both, but you are correct when you say it stands for "Developers' System" as well. :y:

I knew that it has two screens  As hard as it is to believe I have only actually held/seen for myself a DS not even a week ago. I didnt know what the second screen was really used for, thought maybe a menu or something.

In most games I have been told the second screen is just stuff not readily needed on the main screen, but still used quite often.

You mean things like stats or meters?

No, like the right half of games meant to be played sideways. You know, extraneous information.
