In only somewhat particular order.
Asheron's Call 1 (MMO)
EVE Online (MMO)
Crysis
Age of Empires 1 + Rise of Rome expansion
Rainbow Six 1 w/NATO mod - had some great fun with this even on 56k back in the day
Dunno.. those are just off the top of my head.

ok so planescape, dawn of war, thief 2
or rome total war
which of these should I get first?
also yeah kk i pretty much just looked at PC gamer, I mean I'm new to it and I just searched and they had a pretty comrehensive list, but I have stuff that's on that list like Deus ex which I had played before and when they put it at number 1 I trusted them I mean they also had half life 2 on there and I thought it was great but not really my style of game. So yes I did look on there, but I mean it was the best source I found, so if you are trying to insult me, mission failed, abort! ABORT!
Like your mom should have done

also can someone tell me what's so amazing about eve online? I've heard it's different than most mmorpgs but i can't really imagine flying around in space forever being all that much fun I like to have charecter interaction and story. Please correct me on this
I'm not much for mmorpgs yet because I'm not much for PvP
I would love to play them but I think when they come up with games where the mission's are as inticate as say oblivion, and each person really influences things and you have to take care of your charecter like in the isms (of course toned down) but you have to actually walk to your job when you want to get paid, or do some sort of really deep mission, that can either be a single player or a multi player mission.
another problem is leveling I don't want to devote my time to leveling up so much that I can't just pick up and feel like I'm affectin ghte game world, MMORPGs are amazing if you plan on investing time to them.
One day when they reach a different pinnacle like a MMORPGFPS or something I'll jump on that bandwagon

If you don't like PvP you will get bored of it to be completely honest. You don't have to level up, because skill gain is done in real time using a weird system. But the game itself is crazy in depth, and extremely fulfilling when you actually get something done.
But if you don't like PvP, you will not like it. It is primarily PvP in practically everything.. whether playing the economy, or actually fighting other players, or even just trying to mine to do crafting.. always have to be on the watch for other players, if you want to go where the real money is in the game. I mean.. you could essentially stay in PvE space at all times, but there is still a chance that someone will suicide kill you to try taking what you have.. and you would miss out on the main focus of the game.
I wrote some big long post like a year ago or something you could probably find by searching the forum..

And they already have MMOFPS's, but they are all pretty shitty so far.

well it's not that I am anti PVP but I just feel that I would rather work toward a common goal at most times and do intricate puzzles or whatever ie adventure games, I mean fighting is fun and what not, and if the system was done right it could be awesome, but I don't enjoy the repetitiveness of it in games like WOW
City of Heroes has however peaked my interest with the full customability of charecters.
Another issue is the subscription shit, but that can be easily avoided with private servers even though that's illegal nad you can lose your charecter in a second. Anarchy online was interesting as well. but again it's the repetiveness that kills me.
It's ironic though that I enjoy games like Harvest Moon which are essentially repetitive tasks, but they change monthly ie crops etc and there is an ongoing story that keeps me going.
In MMORPGS there is an overall story but I would want to feel like I am a main influence in the gaming world, even if I wasn't. that's what I like about games the escapism, you get to be someone who is changing the world around you, and you are the primary focus. IRL I'll probably never save the world let alone anyone's life except my future kids maybe in a roundabout way or something.
In MMORPGs I don't really feel like I'm anyone important or moreso than anyone else, and in order to be I'd have to spend a long time gaining levels which just isn't fun to me, if it were fun then hell I'd do it. But again the repitition (kinda metawriting right now by saying this over and over)

EVE is by far the second best MMO I've played, only because the best was my first and no memories will ever compare to that game's.
But as far as working towards a common goal, that is primarily what EVE is about. Joining huge alliances made up of multiple corporations (guilds), all working to capture territory and maintain an income to supply their warfare. Pretty much the simplest way to describe it. It is a lot deeper than that, but that's what it is about in the 'big picture'.
It's a single server game, that has topped out somewhere at like 47k people online at the same time. There is really no point to playing on private servers because the appeal of the game -is- its single server environment. This allows literally hundreds of -huge- corporations to exist, some with a thousand plus members in them. It is also a sci-fi game obviously, and combat is restricted to ship-based combat. People think it is simple on the surface, but once you get past that and into the numbers and all, it is really complex. The game actually takes knowledge and skill to be good at, and it has one of the highest learning curves of any MMO I've ever played. But it is also the most rewarding because there are actually penalties associated with death.. etc.. so when you succeed in something, you really feel like you worked at it.. unlike WoW where if you die, who gives a shit you just respawn with some armor damage which can be repaired for cheap.

http://eve.klaki.net/heist/
One of the most expensive in-game heists in any MMO, done in a way that was completely allowed due to them using the game's mechanics. The only one that I can think of worth more money was the Intergalactic Bank Heist, which the guy got away with over $170,000(USD) worth of in-game cash. But not done in nearly as cool a manner as the above link. For serious though. Amazing game.. real world style economy, harsh PvP, territorial conquest.. basically choose your own gaming style. Not to mention, rather spectacular graphics considering it's based in space and there normally wouldn't be much there.

man he got over 170 mil and still had to pay 16 bucks a month. loser.
I might give it a try if they have a free demo thing, but the thing with that would be even if you do a free trial month you can't really get into the game deep in only a month. Another problem with most mmorpgs.
Def. gonna try city of heroes eventually

so it isn't just ships running around you actually have a person as well?
Requiem
08-10-2008, 02:45 AM
Actually, you can purchase game time cards using in-game money from other players. Prices vary based on supply and demand. And yeah, they have a 14 day trial that doesn't require a CC that you can do as many times as you want. I did the trial about 5 or 6 times before actually subscribing, because you seriously will not know what you're doing for a while.
And nah.. just ships, until some time this year when they add the ambulation expansion (which will be free like all their other expansions) and it will add walking in stations, and a number of other ways to make money that way.

Try Sudden Strike, and better yet Sudden strike II.
The graphics arent great but it is quite challenging, its a WWII sim and the omputer actuly has pretty good AI. You will get ambushed, outflanked, be paradropped on, all sorts of stuff you dont normally get from a game.
