Pens fire Therrien
Dan Bylsma has been named interim head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, replacing Michel Therrien, it was announced tonight by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.
Bylsma, 38, has been serving as head coach of the team’s American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He will coach his first game with the Penguins Monday at 2 p.m. against the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.
Therrien was relieved of his duties this evening, and assistant coach Andre Savard was reassigned within the organization.
Assistant coach Mike Yeo and goaltending coach Gilles Meloche will remain with the coaching staff. Tom Fitzgerald, the Penguins’ director of player development, will join the staff as an assistant coach.
“We believe we need a change in direction and, with 25 games remaining in the regular season, our goal remains to finish strong and qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs,” Shero said. “Dan Bylsma is one of the bright young coaches in the game and has done an exceptional job as the head coach in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season.
“We also would like to thank Michel Therrien for his significant contributions to the Penguins organization.”
Bylsma (pronounced BYLE-smuh) played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular season games and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He retired as a player following the 2003-04 season.
The native of Grand Haven, Mich. began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05. He made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06.
Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as an assistant to Todd Richards in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006-07. In two seasons, the Richards-Bylsma coaching tandem led WB/S to a 98-49-5-8 record. The Baby Penguins won the AHL East Division and Eastern Conference championships in 2007-08 and advanced to the Calder Cup Final.
When Richards accepted a job as an assistant coach with the NHL’s San Jose Sharks in the off-season, Bylsma was elevated to head coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
This season under Bylsma, the Baby Penguins are 35-16-1-2. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defeated Worcester today, 5-2, for its eighth straight victory.
In Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, assistant coach Todd Reirden will continue to be a significant part of the coaching staff. The Penguins organization will announce further plans for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton staff on Tuesday.

Maybe if Kovalev got off his ass and played like he is played to pay, or if Price actually tried to stop the pucks instead of simply playing his butterfly style and then trying to flop around by crawling on his knees, or if Markov played as good on defense as he does on offense, or if the Kostytsyns were more consistent, maybe Carbonneau wouldn't be in hot water like that. The coach can do his part, but the players are clearly doing nothing right here.

Kovalev - Huge Disappointment this year.
Price - He needs to redo the first half in the second half next year.
Markov - He is ok, I have no complaints
Kostitsyns - Agreed

They sent him home for a couple days. He's the kind of player you really have to baby. I don't *think* they're trying to unload him. Yet. Take the letter off his jersey, tell him you're doing it because you want all his focus to be on scoring points and being the best player he possibly can be. No distractions.

On RDS.ca, they said that he confided to a Russian source that he didn't want to play for Montreal anymore and that he doubts he will come back after the two matches even if asked. How true is it? I don't know. I'll ask the Russian guy at work to read the source web site and tell me if they really say anything about it.

Was it on "L'Antichambre"? What happened?
Zen v.W.o.
02-19-2009, 11:59 PM
Yeah, Demers was in tears on the show. He also said he's thinking about guys like Beliveau who have so much class and how they're going to feel when the news breaks.
I've heard rape/sexual assault. Police waiting for the Habs plane at Dorval.
I really hope that isnt true.
http://www.rds.ca/video/visionneuse.html?category=10
Click on "L'Antichambre" and then the first "Les manchettes des Experts" (second in the list) to see the Demers clip. It's in French but yeah.
Basically:
Demers: "Honestly, there are things I know, and what looks like what's going to come out [in the papers] tomorrow, I swear to you, I thought about Mr. Beliveau tonight...and I just hope I'm dreaming. I'm a proud Canadien, the Canadiens are my life, and I hope I'm dreaming but I don't think I am"
Bergeron: "I feel the same way. It's unbelievable. Tomorrow, hockey will be second. I don't like at all what I've heard today."
Hartley: "If everything we've been told is true, I've never seen that in my life. If it's true, I'm going back to Atlanta [joking]"
Mitchell: "The Canadiens are my roots, and my idols, like you guys...and it looks like the foundation is going to be shaken. Not just for the Quebecois but for anyone who wears the Canadiens sweater around the country. To me, what's happened, it's unacceptable".
Crete: "We can't go into many details but something has happened that will implicate not just one Canadiens player but many. You'll be hearing more tomorrow."
Apparently the Kostitsyn bros. and Roman Hamirlik are involved in some sort of street gang or rival gangs. As much as I dislike the Habs cause of the rivalry with the Bruins, no organization should have to face this kind of heat.

Basically, it looks like everything has been overblown and people are blaming RDS and the commenters on "L'Antichambre" as reacting to rumours too soon. Apparently the police never went to Dorval airport, and the Kostitsyn were only acquaintances of the guy who got arrested as he spoke Russian too and would pick up chicks for them. Hamrlik was only mentioned by the same man in a phone convo but didn't actually talk with him.
I watched the "L'antichambre" show you linked to, Zen. Wow, from what they said, I thought half the team was wanted for murder.

Yeah, but they also want to make the playoffs for the first time in a while, so it's not like they had a choice. The Habs did the same with Souray a couple of years ago.

Sharks is winning this year. For once they have all the right ingrdients. In the past years, they usually got knocked early because of poor defence and a lack of anything good past the second line. I think this is their year, if Marleau can come back soon.
Also, the Habs are now officially in the playoffs. And as a huge Canadiens fan, I want to make the prediction that no matter who we get in the first round, we won't make it past match #5. :(

Who are the guys who can change a match, like proper world class players?

A mix of both really. There's a few still around but they generally aren't called enforcers anymore. Especially with the fine and suspension for instigating with, under 5 or 10 minutes left forget what it was, they don't get put out on the ice to send messages for next time anymore.

Pests as well.
Grinders is more a term for a forward that works hard in the retrieval of the puck in the offensive zone.
There are still enforcers in the league, but they are not as prominent as they used to be.

Submit proof to me that Kronwall ever left his skates on any of his body checks this series, and then maybe I'll be more inclined to believe you.
Also, WTF was that bullshit at the end of last night's game? And don't
tell me the ref didn't see the puck go in the net because he wasn't in
position...I refuse to believe that flat-out, horseshit lie, because he was right behind the fucking net when he "blew the play dead" with 1:04 left

You have got to be fucking kidding me dude...I seriously hope this guy doesn't get to ref another single second of action in the NHL, EVER. Well, all due respect to Blackhawks fans, but there was absolutely NO FUCKING EXCUSE for the despicable deeds of the Chicago players during the game, and there is CERTAINLY no room in the NHL for coaches who think they can blatantly fucking argue during and after the game over a call made at the end of Sunday's 1st period. As for as I'm concerned, Joel Quenneville got off with way too little punishment. As far as I'm concerned, if I was in the NHL commissioner's (sp.?) shoes, I would have suspended his sorry ass for tonight's game.
You add all that to horrible goaltending (yes, I do realise they played without normal G Nikolai Khabibulin), and a Detroit team that was looking to avenge the game 4 loss and take out some serious frustration and there was just no way we were going to let Chicago fly back to the Joe for tonight's game 5 with the series knotted @ 2 gm.'s a piece.

Red Wings expect Lidstrom, Ericsson to play
Friday, 05.29.2009 / 2:01 PM / News (http://www.nhl.com/ice/newsindex.htm?location=%2Fnews&view=headline)
Associated Press
DETROIT (AP) -Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said Friday defensemen Nicklas Lidstrom (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8457063) and Jonathan Ericsson (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8470318) will play in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals.
Babcock said Pavel Datsyuk's (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8467514) status will be a last-minute decision before
Saturday night's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins (http://penguins.nhl.com/) in the NHL's first championship rematch in 25 years.
Lidstrom and Datsyuk practiced the day before the opener, but Ericsson didn't as a precaution just days following surgery for acute appendicitis.
The defending champion Red Wings will lean heavily on Lidstrom against superstars Sidney Crosby (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8471675) and Evgeni Malkin (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8471215). Lidstrom is a six-time winner of the Norris Trophy, given to the NHL's top defenseman, and a finalist to win it again this summer. He has missed two games with a lower-body injury
Detroit would also get a boost from Datsyuk, a finalist for league MVP and best defensive forward honors, but doesn't want to rush him back because a foot injury kept him out of the last three games in the Western Conference finals.

I think last night's fight definitely sealed the deal for any non-traditional NHL viewers out there who weren't sure whether or not they would watch game 3 Tuesday, and btw, to whoever posted the pic, I'm sorry but a still pic cannot do that end of game brawl justice, so, here everyone, is a vid version (\/):

Oh, and @ splaya's mini-diatribe: Sorry, man but I gotta side with the refs on this one. I applaud them for showing some restraint in the penalty dept. (i.e., only calling the obviously way blatant shit) They weren't born yesterday. They know just as well as every fan, player, coach, GM and owner out there what's at stake, and they don't want to disrupt the flow of the games. :y:
You son of a bitch I was defending the refs

NHL's Campbell rescinds Malkin suspension
Sunday, 05.31.2009 / 11:48 PM / 2009 Stanley Cup Final: Detroit vs. Pittsburgh (http://www.nhl.com/ice/newsindex.htm?location=%2Fportal%2Fseries4-1&view=headline)
NHL.com
DETROIT -- National Hockey League Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8445893) issued the following statement regarding the instigator penalty assessed to Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8471215) at 19:41 of the third period of tonight’s Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final:
Rule 47.22 states: "A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five minutes or at any time in overtime shall be suspended for one game, pending a review of the incident. The director of hockey operations will review every such incident and may rescind the suspension based on a number of criteria. The criteria for the review shall include, but not be limited to, the score, previous incidents, etc..."
Following that review, Campbell said: "None of the criteria in this rule applied in this situation. Suspensions are applied under this rule when a team attempts to send a message in the last five minutes by having a player instigate a fight. A suspension could also be applied when a player seeks retribution for a prior incident. Neither was the case here and therefore the one game suspension is rescinded."
NHL Hockey Operations also determined that Malkin should have been assessed a game misconduct for not having his jersey tied down.
From: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=424480
:nono: Bullshit, none of the criteria apply! Apparently this jackass who made the decision can't read his own goddamned rule that starts with "A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five minutes..." THERE WAS :18.2 to go in the game!!! So I guess nobody's above a suspension, unless you're Evgeni Malkin...again, just :nono:

They aren't gonna suspend a star player for the Stanley Cup finals. Especially when the league is starved for ratings and it currently has its best opportunity to get back on American national television in a big way for the first time in years.

But guess what. For games 3 and 4, they are not going back on National Television. The game is strictly on Versus

That's Jesus's point though. Unless there's a sweep by Detroit (not happening, btw) Games 5-7 ARE on national TV. Malkin being on the ice for Game 3 helps make sure they get to those "if necessary" games.
Game 1 the Pens were the better team, but suffered some bad bounces.
Game 2 the Red Wings were the better team, and the Pens were 2 posts away from a tie game.
Hossa got away with a BIG one that directly led to Filppula's goal.

If Pittsburgh plays game 3 like how they did in the first 2 games, the broom is DEF coming out in game 4...

Althought the wings are the superiour team, I doubt that the pens will get swept. I think that they will win game 3 tongiht, but then lose games four and five to the wings.

Just kidding. There are quite a few out there like you say, but I and most of my friends are equally Gino and Sarge fans. Besides, if Sid gets too pompous, we'll chase him away like we did Jagr.

This is turning out to be a great series. Series don't start till home team loses. I said that after the first two games and now after the series is tied. Also I am a Pens fan and I gotta say the refs are putting the whistle away this series and its going both ways. I like it. Let the players decide it.

Well, if they're still stupid enough to say we'll "probably win the cup" (i.e., in Gm. 5 Saturday), well then, they obviously didn't take note that the series is tied 2-2, meaning neither side is taking the cup until at least Gm. 6, possibly even Gm. 7...
