What Would Kevin Do?
04-05-2009, 11:21 PM
Could it be that the first time around you had a green Orton that was horrible on the mic and couldn't rest hold his way into a decent match? Could it be that the majority of smarks on this board were constantly cursing Vinnie Mac, asking how he could possibly put the belt on Orton?
And I guess I'm alone in thinking this now but I still think he's boring as all hell. He still sounds like a damn robot on the mic, and no, he does not have the workrate needed to make you forget about that.
Where did all this Orton love come from? Has he ever had a good match where he wasn't completely carried?
Was he green, yes, but, he was fucking over, and sometimes that is more important. His character was over with the ground, so they turn it a complete 180, make him a pussy, and then have him lose to HHH.
This time around, he's suppose to be THE heel in the company. I'm not a huge Orton fan, but it makes no sense to build him up as this huge heel, this huge threat, and then make him look like a bitch. Workrate isn't everything, and tonight, WWE through out the best opportunity to make Orton.
Whatever they do with him now, he'll never be what he could have been, because ultimately, they just threw that out the window.

For a guy that is probably in his 50s, AND Jericho being in it..i think it would've been 4* at the LEAST. Of course not a HBK/Hart match, but definitely an Old School/New School WM classic.
The only thing holding Steamboat back was his stamina...he got noticeably (and understandably) tired by the end of the match. Previous to that though he was doing great. At that point I wished it wouldve just been Steamboat and Jericho. I really wanted Ricky to win.

I still dont get how they could make No Way Out so awesome but WM so crappy
Random thoughts (did not read the whole thread for obvious reasons):
Piper and Snuka looked like shit but Steamboat was on fire. With a little more conditioning (he blew up half way through) I could see him going another run. At the very least I'd like to see one more Flair vs. Steamboat.
Michaels vs Taker.... Yeah, match of the night and probably match of the year. It started off extremely slow, but once you got mid-match, after Taker took that sick dive, it picked up and more than made up for it. Ridiculously great near falls. AWESOME spots, especially the skin the cat to the Tombstone (With Michaels kicking out, HOLY SHIT) and Taker getting frustrated and using the Elbow Drop, and it lived up to my expectations. And my expectations were fucking high. 5 stars with ease.
We now have an infestation of Cena clones. Someone call the exterminator before they breed any more. But I have to admit I marked for Basic Thuganomics. If Cena had cut a freestyle I wouldn't have minded him winning.
Orton/Triple H was extremely interesting and I really liked it. Very different type of match. Nice and slow and a lot of mind games. I think they played off the fact Triple H couldn't use weapons or go all-out really well. Obviously second best match of the night.
Overall, I'll give the night a 9/10. That will probably lower with time, but aside from Kid Rock, the Divas Match and Rey/JBL the night was really enjoyable.
Again. Taker vs. Michaels was one of the best WWE matches I have ever seen. Even with time I see it easily staying within my top three matches of all time.

I am so pissed right now. I really expected Orton to win, but he was just buried 6 feet deep again. HHH winning just proves that he hasnt changed, he is still the guy that buries people. Aside from MITB, Hardys, and Taker/Shawn, this was a very disappointing night.

DOn't get me wrong, I marked the holy hell out for Ricky. I love him to death, but i just don't know how good of ring shape he's actually in as far as cardio goes.
The way Ricky was looking, they could've had a 20 min classic. Jericho could've definitely carried the load with Ricky getting in offense here and there. Maybe some good counters, roll ups thrown in there. I think it definitely could be a WM great. You saw how hot the crowd was for it.

I don't post a whole lot. But after watching the main event, I feel compelled.
Why in the hell would you devote the heart of your flagship program building up arguably the company's biggest heel over the last 3 to 4 months, creating the kind of heat that's been garnered, and elevating him to a level he's never reached before, only to job him out, on the biggest stage of the year, to a guy who has headlined more WrestleManias this decade than anyone, and who really didn't need the win? I just don't understand. I know WWE isn't known for their keen logic. But for Christ's sake, it was BLATANTLY obvious that Orton HAD to go over there. They have completely wasted everything Orton has built up.
Thank God for Steamboat making me mark and the UT/HBK match...

04-06-2009, 12:05 AM
 51-2 poll so far.
I just got back from my friend's place, and I'm extremely torn on this card. Michaels/UT was fantastic. The greatest match Undertaker's ever been a part of, and it's way up there in the HBM pantheon. At least in my top three WM matches ever, and possibly #1. We'll see with time. Just an absolutely fantastic story.
I was with a bunch of my friends who were fans way back when, and we all marked out when Steamboat hit the ring. He looked like a million bucks. And, yeah, his conditioning wasn't what it was 22 years ago, but he still nearly stole the show. That was an amazing nostalgia moment for me. Goosebumps.
Money In The Bank wasn't as good as it has been in previous years, because a lot of the spots were really predictable. I mean, I know they always are, but it didn't seem like this year's match had the moment like past years. Last year, we had Morrison doing the moonsault with the ladder, this year the best we've got is Shelton's nearly-botched somersault onto the floor or possibly Kofi scrambling up the folded ladder and falling into the World's Strongest Slam.
I had low expectations for Matt versus Jeff because I remember how bad the match was the last time they tangled, but they've both come a long way since then. And Matt going over (relatively) clean is hopefully the next step toward making him into something other than the other Hardy Boy.
The Divas battle royal was abhorrent. They hyped this up as a homecoming for all these classic divas, and where the hell were they? I mean, yeah, they were in the ring, but there were so many of them, I couldn't make them out. The eliminations were coming too fast, and the cameras couldn't keep up, and the announcers weren't keeping up. I didn't even know who was in the match until the final five. Absolutely a waste of space on the card.
Speaking of wastes of space - Kid Rock. If I wanted to see a Kid Rock concert, I'd go to a Kid Rock concert. And I don't want to see a Kid Rock concert.
Not that I'm a huge John Layfield fan, but that's a shitty way to lose a title.7
Both title matches were all right, but anti-climactic. The triple threat had a better finish (the main event had all of us going "What the fuck? That's it?!?"), but the main event told a better story overall.
They didn't just drop the ball on Orton tonight, they climbed up to the top of the world's tallest building and threw it down as hard as they could. Onto a bed of nails. Wrapped in barbed-wire. That was on fire. Any semblance of a ball is absolutely gone.
Decidedly average pay-per-view, but that's awful for a WrestleMania.

Here are a few thing I want out of wrestlemania this year...
--Trish Stratus to be in the Diva Battle Royal
--Colons/Mizmo to go at least 10 minutes
--JBL to defeat Rey Mysterio
--Christian, MVP, Shelton Benjamin or Kane to win Money in the Bank
--Mark Henry to do some sort of move off a ladder like a Powerslam for example.
--Ricky Steamboat to do a series of armdrags on Jericho culmanating with a well placed drop kick to send Jericho out of the ring.
--A Steve Austin post match stunner to Jericho
--Jeff Hardy to do a Swanton off a big ladder.
--Old school being reversed into Sweet Chin music.
--The Undertaker to do an old school sit up after getting hit with Sweet Chin Music.
--Undertakers obligatory suicide dive and Michaels obligatory moonsault to the outside.
--Anyone but John Cena walking out champion or failing that John Cena making out with Vicke Gurrero after winning the title.
--HHH/Orton to be given at least 25 minutes to work.
...if I get like 9 of those I'll be very happy.
I got none of those... but I'm still pretty happy.
Not a bad WrestleMania, but I feel like that shouldn't be an acceptable reaction to the biggest show of the year. Main event was highly disappointing.
It shouldn't be acceptable, but thanks to shows like Wretlemania IX, Wrestlemania XI and Wrestlemania 2000, it's hardly anything new.

HBK + undertaker was incredible though. like i was on the edge of my seat acting like a spastic into the match. i think part of it is the fact i thought undertaker had broken his neck/paralyzed himself after the botched toprope thing. the fact he could do anything at all after that made everything he did do utterly amazing.

A really good undercard was totally destroyed by a lackluster main event.
The 3 way gave us what was to be expected, but HHH and Orton hitting their own finishes within 30 seconds of the match killed it for me. And the finish was super flat. I hope this goes some way to showing that HHH can't carry a crowd anymore.
Taker/HBK was some of the best shit I've seen in years, like last HBk managed to make me think the predictable wouldn't happen, after he kicked out of the tombstone I stood up and started marking out for the first time in ages, that's why those 2 guys are still awesome.

I haven't watched the World Title matches yet, but they sound pretty predictable. Surprise, surprise, Triple H puts himself over in the main event of WrestleMania XXV like he's the biggest star in professional wrestling. Cena winning the World Heavyweight Title at least made sense, though.
Money in the Bank was fantastic, and I totally called CM Punk winning it. All you had to do was really think about it. The same goes for Carlito & Primo winning the Tag Team Titles on the pre-show.
The only other thing I didn't like about the show, was that Chris Jericho got bitched out by Mickey Rourke. I tried to reason that it was the Jericho mark in me talking, but I came to the conclusion it made Jericho look like a punk, and the business look inferior to acting. Flair could have at least low blowed Jericho before Rourke beat the crap out of him.
Also, I agree, Ricky Steamboat making a short return would be fucking stupendous.
RGWhat316
04-06-2009, 03:07 AM
I'm not usually this negative of WWE, but tonight was just a big mess. The biggest show of the year, just seemed rushed. I guess Vince has completely lost his mind and seemed to do whatever he could to piss people off or confuse them. There were way more negatives than there were positives to this show. And if I worked in WWE, I would be really upset over these past few days.
The undercard gets completely shat on. Usually some of these guys not on the WM card will get basic matches on one of the shows. But with the exception of RAW, both ECW and SD were mainly recap shows! So the only chance these guys get to be on WM is to be involved in a lumberjack match, then that gets bumped off the card!
The women got robbed as well. Those who were excited to be returning, dont even get introductions, or barely last 30 seconds in a match. Then the winner is Santino Marella in drag. So these women dont even get to win their match.
The celebrity appearances this year sucked as well. Nicole was fine in doing "God Bless America" since they do have someone sing that every year. But Kid Rock and Mickey Rourke seemed to take their good ol time being out there. Kid Rock gets about 10 minutes, and Rourke cant decide if he wants to get in the ring, he does slowly and gets 1 shot in on Jericho.
The IC title gets defended for the first time since I believe '02, and that gets turned into an under 30 second joke. So JBL's history making moment is quitting?
Most of the rest of the matches went fine, even the World Title match, which I expected Cena to win. Surprised CM Punk won MITB again. But with his win, I think he maybe the first guy to cash in and not win it. Steamboat really surprised me in the Legends match, even though Snuka and Piper looked horrible. Of course Shawn/Taker is the showstealer. Shawn's entrance was cool, and Takers suicide dive was unbelievable.
But the main event between Orton and HHH now should have not been the main event. IMO, this has killed Randy Orton's momentum, and I dunno what can be done to regain it. The finish even left me with a "what, that's it?" reaction, which should not be a typical WM reaction.

WrestleMania 25 was "booking 101" with a few fuck ups (mainly time: Kid Rock, Mickey Rourke).
MONEY IN THE BANK --> An over babyface wins, and it so happens he won it last year. COOL
KID ROCK --> REALLY REALLY LONG CROWD-KILLER
DIVAS BATTLE ROYAL --> UNDERWHELMING CLUSTERFUCK OF SHIT
MATT VS JEFF --> Good match with typical hardy spots, HEEL WINS! (Interesting to see where that goes)
JBL VS REY --> Retiring heel is made a fool out of by babyface.
TAKER VS MICHAELS--> Instant Classic. 2 of the best in the world just do what they do best.
CENA/SHOW/EDGE --> Cena wins! (Poor Edge.)
HHH/ORTON --> Babyface gets payback on the heel (even though he had to use a sledgehammer to beat him)
Rammsteinmad
04-06-2009, 03:42 AM
My thoughts:
- Money in the Bank was okay. A lot of blown spots, but as someone said, this kinda match isn't easy, so it's fine. Kofi Kingston was great in this match.
- Kid Rock sucked, and went on for AGES!
- Diva Battle Royal was absolutely shit! Not only a total waste of time, but they didn't even do individual entrances so people can mark out for old-school divas (which in all fairness, no one cared about anyway). Santino dancing was hilarious, but overall it's sad to think they took the Tag Team title match off the card for this!
- I felt Jericho's match was a waste of a potential five star Jericho match anyway, BUT a nice surprise was seeing Steamboat pulling off the stuff he was doing. I think WWE fans are use to seeing Piper and Snuka "one more time", but with Steamboat it was totally new and a pleasent surprise.
- The Rouke section went on for too long IMO.
- The Hardys match was good but I feel could have been better. How long has Matt been wearing tights? I think it totally didn't suit him and make his gut stick out. However I was very pleased that Matt won, sadly I doubt anything will come out of this (like a main event push).
- Rey Mysterio VS JBL is the same as the Diva match, only without Santino's dancing. The whole "quick win" was done last year and isn't that clever anymore. JBL's announcement was shit.
- 'Taker VS HBK. I think the voting results above speak for themselves. AMAZING!
- Triple Threat match was going good but ended too soon I feel. Pretty good match, ending was a shame though, but Cena picking up Big Show and Edge was cool. It was cool hearing Cena's old music coz that suited him so much better, but then the other one played and it all went gay again.
- Main event sucked balls. Terrible match, worse finish. I was sat there thinking "25 years of Wrestlemania, all comes down to this one main event..." and the match was god awful. Mental note I realised during this match: the last seven WM appearances by HHH have all been Title matches. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let that be it!
Overall this was a shit WM. Good PPV but a huge dissapointment for such a milestone event. With every landmark edition (IE: 15, 20, 25 etc) they have to make it feel like "the biggest WM of all time", but god this one was just plain horrible.
The stage was really cool though.
Worth seeing for: 'Taker VS HBK, Triple Threat, Hardys match, Steamboat VS Jericho.

I thought it was a pretty good show. Not as good as the Rumble but not bad. Too much fluff and filler to be a great show though. I expected an all time great match from Taker and HBK and my expectations were met and then exceeded. Steamboat was amazing and made the legends match enjoyable. I became a big Kofi Kingston fan tonight as he really impressed me. I will never complain about CM Punk getting a push, although I'd prefer it was as a heel. Cena/Big Show/Edge was a lot better than I was expecting. Decent pace and a nice finish. Hardys were as good as I expected and I was very happy that Matt won. JBL's segment (that's really all it was) was enjoyable. HHH/Orton was disappointing overall but not because HHH won. It shouldn't have main evented. The battle royal was a pile of shit but Santino is the man so whatever. Still super pissed that they bumped the tag match for that Kid Rock bullshit. I guess this is proof that they still don't see Morrison as a star yet.
A lot about this PPV annoyed me, but there were more positives than negatives. Here's hoping Kid Rock gets cancer.

Noid, shut the fuck up. Triple H isn't the fucking booker, and he isn't the head writer. Please find a valid reason to bitch about the main event, like how it was rushed because of Kid Rock and Mickey Rourke taking too much fucking time.
It wasn't really the rushing of it that made it shit IMO.
They gave it a good 25 minutes. The reason I think it failed was because:
1. No matter what main evented that evening, it wouldn't of been as hot as Taker/HBK, the crowd were burnt out (see Mania 18, HHH trying to main event after Hogan and Rock stole the show)
2. Hitting both finishers in the first minute destroyed it for me, what else was there for the crowd to pop for? No teasing of it or anything. What are they? Backyarders, it makes no sense that later on they are reversing the finishers after 20 minutes, when they shouldn't have as much about them as they do in the first minute of fucking match
3. Considering that HHH was trying to avenge his family, there was very little actual intensity shown IMO
4. Like 3, if someone had done all this to me and my family, I would of been fighting more and wrestling less, too much attempted wrestling psychology for my liking, this should of been much more of a brawl
5. HHH, just isn't that over, time to except it

Thinking about some more now:
6. Orton got hardly any 'heel time' which meant there was no heat for a comeback, in fact HHH controlled too much of it for me, he never looked like he was in trouble

Spot on. There's just no way HHH is going to be a babyface if he's tied to the McMahons. Even more so against a heel as cool as Randy Orton.
HHH is in the main event because Vince and Steph love him. Steamboat vs Jericho would have been a better main event for chrissake.

<font color=goldenrod>Having Orton/HHH with that whole "DQ and you lose the belt" stipulation kinda killed it. After that feud, their match should have been a bloodbath with weapons and the like.
Anyway...still amazed at Taker/Michaels. I can't remember the last time I had my disbelief suspended like that. Deep down I felt Taker would win, but so many times I thought "it's over!" I gasped when HBK kicked out of the first Tombstone. And even though I KNEW the match wouldn't end in countout, Taker fell on his ass at like the count of 9 and I was like NOOOOOO.</font>

I think that the order of the matches was what made it somewhat disappointing. I thought overall it was good, espicially considering the product recently.
The legends match was fun. There was reason that Rourke took so long, it gave Jericho time to get him over as a babyface in the situation. Now, I have little in the way of issues with the way the Rourke situation went down, only because Rourke was a boxer. And I was thinking what if it was Arquette? Praise be to the Beard of Destiny that it was not Arquette.
The tag match should have been on the card. As was stated, it was a horrible call to have the divas instead of a match that redefines the tag division.
JBL vs. Mysterio should have been the curtain jerk. it also should have been a little longer.
Kid Rock is an abortion waiting to happen. I really wish that they would not have a concert during a wrestlign show. Espicially the Big Daddy of them all.
Divas Battle Royal. Poor. Enough said. Could have been alright, if they gave time to spotlight some of the divas. Such as Neidhart, Mickie, Molly, and Victoria. Could have been a 4 way or a tag. Past vs. Present.
Kid Rock still sucks.
The announce team could have been cut by two thirds. I really hate the king. JR has been calling it in for years and needs to retire. Time to pass the torch.
The triple threat would have been better if the Big Show won. Cena isn't really even over with the 8-14 demographic anymore. Big Show should be a monster, like he was with the ECW belt.
Hardy vs. Hardy was really enjoyable. I suspect that Matt will be pushed into the main event this year. It seems that when someone changes their gear they are getting ready for a push. I'm almost glad to see that they're going for a real split of the two. Matt getting "wrestling gear" while Jeff sticks with the jeans. In my opinion, this leaves the door open for each of them to go big places. Also, I bet it's just cool to go out and have a wrestling match with your brother at Wrestlemania.
Shawn vs. Taker was brilliant. This is what Wrestlemania is all about. This match alone met and surpassed my expectations. I cannot begin to say enough good things about this.
HHH vs. Orton is a victim of the order of the card I think. Someone said that this was a vengeance match and I concur with them. The build up was so good that it was hard for the match to meet with it. I might have done old school stipulations on the match: two out of three falls with a one hour time limit. *EDIT* Come ot think of it, I do think that there should have been more of a fight in this match, also, Orton should have been on the offensive for awhile. Maybe this match wasn't as good as my initial idea of it.

You guys are acting like Rey and JBL should've gone 15 minutes and put on a 5 star classic. What else did you want? You got a great promo from JBL, you got Rey in and out of the ring in under 5 minutes, and you got a segway into JBL's return to commentary where he excels and instantly makes whatever show he's on watchable.
And don't tell me it's because they disrespected the IC title. The IC title hasn't meant a thing in years.

Here is why Wrestlemania 25 was lackluster in my opinion:
So many of the storylines were just "smushed" together in a matter of weeks.
An absolute joke:
Seriously....
-JBL vs. Rey Mysterio: Almost no build up...complete waste. No history, no real rivalry, etc. Rey Mysterio should have been involved with Mike Knox somehow.
-HBK vs. Taker: Yes - great match...but again...Almost no build up. The match was basically put together just out of convenience. If it was up to me, JBL would have won the match against HBK in January. As of JBL's request, HBK would have been forced to face his buddy HHH at Wrestlemania. THAT match would have had one helluva build up...and would have had the emotion.
-Jericho vs. legends: Given all the hype that went into this, more was expected. How Austin and Hogan didn't come and give Jericho their finishers was beyond me. The Houston crowd would've gone nuts had they seen a stunner.
-HHH vs. Orton: Again - bullshit. Your main-event match needs a WAY longer build-up. Orton vs. Cena should have the main-event. The tension between them had been boiling for months.....and the crowd reaction would have been very interesting. No way Orton should have jobbed. HHH deserved a win at Mania, but it should've been against someone else (i.e. HBK).
-Cena vs. Edge vs. Big Show: Again - bullshit. A match just slapped together within the last month. Very limited recent history, and very limited emotion. In my opinion, this would've been a GOLDEN opportunity for Edge to face CM Punk for the World/WWE title (i.e. revenge on Edge's part to beat CM Punk for 'stealing' the title off of him a year prior....CM Punk wanting Edge to prove that his win wasn't a fluke). This would've been a perfect opportunity to elevate Punk....by having him go over a credible main-eventer.
MITB: Why have CM Punk win it two years in a row? Why not elevated a new star...like MVP? Another waste by the WWE.
Overall - a very stupid PPV by the WWE.

I agree about 3 matches you list:
1.) MITB: Yeah, why not let someone like Christian, M.V.P. or Shelton Benjamin come away with the briefcase. If any wrestler and not fans, because obviously we were all robbed, should have won it, I believe firmly it should have been Shelton. Poor kid's been in 4 out of 5 and only missed the one because of injury. Methinks Vince has given him the Matt Hardy treatment far too long, and it is a grave injustice to not only Shelton, but also the fans, to not prepare him as a main eventing world champion.
2.) Jericho vs. The Legends: Very poorly executed match. Well thought out with all the hype, but poorly executed when it mattered most, and the saddest thing is, I think fucking Mickey Rourke is what I would call the highlight of that segment.
3.) J.B.L. vs. Rey for the IC title: STUPID, STUPID FUCKING STUPID! is all I can really say..."Hey, here's an idea, let's make Bradshaw look like a fucking 3-year-old crybaby by making him lose the belt in 15 seconds!" Fucks' sake.:nono::foc:
