Shouldn't there be some type of penalty like in the NFL where if a player is gets injured at the end of a game they get charged a timeout. This fucker on the Islanders faked an injury just to stop a breakaway, that is bullshit

Unless the refs on the ice catch it, that sounds more like League office style punishment for the player. Good thing about hockey is if that player tries it again in a future game, the other team will just send a player/goon to beat him up.

He's protected by the NHL like how Lebron/Kobe is protected by the NBA and Pittsburgh was smart to realize this early on and hired a few "goons" as his bodyguards during games last few years.
Basically its the star treatment system that is done in other sports.

Not sure I understand what you mean. I was responding to Assman when he wondered why the Islander guy who basically cheated by faking an injury to stop Washington from getting a chance to score. So if he tried it again, most likely a player will remeber last time and hit him with a powerful check.
Crosby has the reputation of being a complainer but because he is a good player and a potential NHL marketing star, NHL will protect him more than other players (same for Ovechkin and certain players and teams). Its not as blatant as the NBA in protection and how they let refs allow star players to get away with more stuff than regular players.

Difference between Crosby and Ovechkin is that Ovechkin hits back.
Same goes for
Malkin, Thornton, Getzlaf, Perry, Iginla, Richards, Etc.
Any of the listest players have I seen whine and bitch as much as Crosby, I have seen Getzlaf get slashed and nothing called, next shift he dropped the bitch to the ice.
With Crosby, it would be a 5 game suspension for intent to injure.

Woot! Biily Guerin scores with .4 seconds left to send the game to OT, and then Thomas makes a boneheaded non-play and the Pens get back in the W column!

Still in shock that the Canucks ass-pounded the Avs tonight (8-2).
In the last 13 years, I cannot seem to recall the Canucks destroying the Avs this badly. Whenever there has been a tilted score between the two teams, it was the Avs that pummeled the Canucks.

Top 5 NHL Forwards
1) Ovechkin - Can score, fight, check and battle for puck
2) Malkin - See above, plus an uncanny puck control ability
3) Thornton - Best setup man in the game and consistently among league leaders
4) Getzlaf - Best power forward in the game, 91 points and 121 PIM.
5) Datsyuk - Puts up 90+ points while acting as a third defenseman...

Take a look at how many Malkin/Gonchar assisted goals and Malkin/Gonchar secondary assists there were that Crosby got points on.
Oh, And when Crosby was injured, Malkin didnt slump ;)
Lastly, a local newscaster called Crosby "The defending stanley cup champion" as if its a solo honour, wanted to go beat the bastard because he should know better.

Ovechkin

Getzlaf
Thornton (playoff performances drop his ranking.....maybe even more)
Thing is, Crosby got skill. I wont deny that. Seems loads of his assists and most of his goals come from sneaking in around the net and basically tipping them in, games I have watched anyways.
Now, Malkin who is the ONLY player in that list who plays on the SECOND line, I consider a better player as he just is able to do more then Crosby (including putting up more points on a lower line) in almost every aspect besides faceoffs.
Lets see now, with Datsyuk, you have a defensively responsible player, who on a team loaded with talent (meaning of course less chances) he manages 90+ points, Getzlaf (along with Perry and Ryan) make up the 2nd best top line in the league to Washingtons, again with 2 excellent linemates Getzlaf gets his points. Thorton is the same way, as if Ovy. Any of the players who are there besides Malkin have great players on the same line as them, so it would be a bit harder to get points, with Crosby (and Malkin) they are by far the best player on their line and I dare say, depended upon, to make the plays and score the goals because we both know that Ryan and Perry >>>>>>>>> Kunitz and Guerin.
All in all, I just think that all the players I listed have more skill then Crosby.
I agree he is in the top 10, I do not agree he is in the top 5. For the reasons I listed I place him at 6th-7th, depending if you put Kovalchuk ahead because his whole team is terrible and he manages loads of points.

Lucic returning to the Bruins has really turned around the team. It didn't help that Thomas has been meh in the net so far but can't blame him since last year was basically a career year and too many injuries meant an inconsistent team. Since Lucic returned, team has been playing much better and more determined.

You just hate Crosby because he whines every now and then. He's still a top forward in the NHL, every team would kill to get him, because he's great at controlling the puck and he plays both ways.

Your whole argument pretty much says why Crosby is superior. He plays with Kunitz and Guerin. Your "top NHL players" like Getzlaf plays with Ryan and Perry. Even I could score 50 goals playing with these guys. Datsyuk may play on a loaded team, but he's still their top men. It's the others who play less, not him.
Thornton is a great player, but as Heyman said, he chokes under pressure apparently, which is why I ranked Iginla above him. Iginla can carry a team on his shoulders as he proved in Calgary's cup run a couple of years ago.
Crosby and Malkin are pretty much interchangeable, I'll give you that. Both are great puch handlers, can carry the load even when playing with players who would be on the second line mostly anywhere else, and are sound defensively. Atop player needs to play both ways. I ranked Ovechkin above because he's just so overwhelming that he's hard to stop, but even then, I wouldn't call him a good defensive player. Randomly checking players does not qualify as defensive play.
So there you go. Crosby and Malkin play with worst players than Thornton, Datsyuk or Ovechkin and still turn in the numbers. That's why they're good. The whinniness only makes me respect him less, but I don't think he's a bad player for that.

I suppose you are correct, though I wouldnt say Crosby is better then Malkin (While Malkin sucks at faceoffs, he does hit better and hold onto the puck better, so Im giving him the edge)
As for Getzlaf and Thornton, they have always played with good linemates, so we cant tell if they would be good on a crappy line.
Given that logic, Kovalchuk should be higher and I agree with you Iginla analysis.
Thing I am trying to say is, the players I listed play the whole game and not mostly the scoring and assisting part.
I hate myself for making this comparison but Crosby is like Gretzky years ago, a finesse player who doesnt dig in the corners, take/give hard hits without whinning and isnt the first player on the backcheck they play the part of the game where they dont get hurt, whereas the rest I listed get banged up on a nightly basis.
Anyways, like I said Crosby got skill, I agree but not in every aspect of the game and if he didnt whine so much it would be easier to respect him.

McGratten is probably around 6-7. Orr beat him decisivly. Bieska is nowhere near top 10, although the Canucks have Rypien who is probably the best middleweight. You to take into account weight classes matters alot.
Brashear got knocked down a peg in the hockeyfights world when Belak ko'd him last year but he's still fantastic. Laraque isn't looked upon too highly because he throws two punches and then wrestles the guy to the ice but he's damn good. Based on this years fighting records, Orr is probably the top guy right now with wins over Koci, Parros, McGratten and Carkner. This year could be the toughest year ranking guys because there really isn't a dominate guy and it's hard to rank Laraque #1 when he A) doesn't play, B) doesn't fight when he does play) C) Has only fought Orr and Erskine and really wasn't dominate in either fight.

Clarkson is a middleweight, Neil is BARELY a heavyweight and not a very good one, and Ivanans is a bum and even that fight was a draw. Christ, John Erskine handled him(being Lucic) easily.
Chara has fought some heavy's and not done very well against them. Laraque beat him easily a while ago.
Chara's crappy balence is what hurts him in fights. If he can't stand, how can he fight?

I guess I can agree with Chara (although I have seen him absolutely PUMMEL some guys). The main thing is that Laraque is still clearly the best fighter in the league (as I was pointing out to Assman)
He is a lefty, I wonder if that is why he is the best as most times he is fighting right handers.
Most of the time I cheer for the best players in the league unless they are assholes or something because I like watching them play. I've gone to Nationals games when they play the Cardinals just to see Albert Pujols. If I was a fan of another hockey team I wouldn't cheer when Ovechkin scored against us, I would just be like "Dang that guy is crazy good, I wish he was on my team."
There are players from Toronto I like, I hate Toronto but I still like watching Stajan and Gustavsson play, its pretty nice when you dont dislike every player on a team.
If I were going top 10 in the league right now I'd rank it
1. Orr
2. Brashear
3. Laraque
4. Godard
5. Belak
6. McGratten
7. Koci
8. Parros
9. Boogaard
10. Shelley
Reverse order the top 3 and I agree fully.

FA it's hard to rank Laraque when he isn't very active and to my knowledge hasn't gotten off to a good start this year. Brashear is at least pretty active and wins the majority of his fights. Boogs is entering Laraque territory. He doesn't fight very much at all, and when he does he's not as good as he was, although I think his back had alot to do with his decrease in fighting last year. Boogaard is another guy with shitty balence. Belak would be higher if he fought more. He was hands down the heavyweight champion last year, but he does this every firggen season: doesn't fight alot to start but then picks it up.
Orr has fought 7 times already. Wins against Carkner, Parros, Koci, McGratten, and Godard. Draw against Laraque and a loss against Brashear. That's a helluva fight card already.

Does everyone here "hate" Ovechkin or what, everywhere he goes he gets booed by other fans. I guess they think he is a dirty player? A lot of people don't like Ovechkin either because he's on a rival team or because he plays with too much emotion. When he scores, he tends to go overboard on celebrating and to some people they think he might be taunting while it might be more of him really enjoying playing.

Wow.
You are joking right?!?!
Everything you just said here is completely false. Crosby digs very effectively in the corners, and DOES give/take pretty nice shots at people. He is a very tenacious and positionally sound player.
Crosby is also an excellent two way player, and I have no idea where this "isn't the 1st player in the backcheck' bullshit is coming from.
As far as Crosby/Malkin goes - you DO realize that a major reason why Malkin racks up points (aside from the fact that he's talented as hell), is the fact that the TOP defenders and shut down forwards are all over Crosby's ass right? (which is why often times, the Pens sometimes put Malkin and Crosby on the same line to counter this).
Crosby does whine a lot, but the guy IS constantly getting smacked HARD due to the fact that he's a sheer threat almost each and every time.
I love Ovechkin, and he IS a better player than Crosby, but lets not forget who outplayed who when the Caps/Pens played last year.

Yeah didn't mean to imply he's the main reason for the team stinking or giving up on certain games. Last year was basically his career year so it was assumed he would go back to normal this season.
The whole team is being too inconsistent than they should be for the talent they have. Might be related to how last season "spoiled" them with a #1 seed in the East and low expectations unlike this year with higher expectations and the injuries being bad to start the season.
Not going to be upset though since they still have the 5th seed unlike earlier in the season when they were in the 11th/12th range in the East.
El Fangel
12-14-2009, 10:44 PM
I think losing Kessel was a major blow to the team, they seem to not have that "Holy fuck, we are playing the bruins, fuck" type of deal going on this year.
Last year there was Lucic - Savard - Kessel, that was a scary combo, now its Sturm - Savard - Ryder and that isnt nearly as imposing, plus they got rid of Chara - Wideman which worked out well.
LA Kings on the other hand, got their shit together.
Emperor Smeat
12-14-2009, 10:49 PM
Yeah Kings are the real "shock" team so far compared to previous years of usually being in last place or near last place. Might actually benefit the Sharks more since no more slagging off thinking they are the best in the season and then fall apart in the playoffs.

Great goal by the Sedins just now.
Do you think that this is a "fluke" year for the Sedins-Burrows line? I have a feeling that this is one of those years that gets players a huge new contract, then they fail to repeat the performance next season, and none of them will be in the top 10 scoring leaders next season.
For the Canucks sake, I hope this isn't the case. But I just feel this is like the year that Naslund and Bertuzzi were up top, never to see it again. Or like that year that McCabe was scoring goals like crazy on the leafs, then returned to normal.

I think its time for the Bruins to have Rask as the #1 goalie for rest of the season. Something is defiantly wrong with Thomas this year with how he's letting in too many easy goals than a good or average goalie would be letting. Not all his fault since the injuries and poor defense is hurting the team but it seems like every game or 2 he lets in a head scratching goal.
The team itself still has good potential and has a good seed but the inconsistency is getting a bit ridiculous now.

I'm going to assume he hates them/Crosby more because of how he's the NHL's "golden boy"/savior and how much the NHL and analysts gush over him similar to how the NBA and experts gush over Lebron as the next Jordan even before being in the NBA instead of earning it by merit/play.
I rooted for the Capitals last playoffs when it was Caps-Penguins mainly because I liked Ovechkin's play style better and favored him over Crosby.
