They usually take the best available players.

can't figure out why the broncos would rather have Tim Tebow than Jimmy Clausen but whatever
FearedSanctity
04-23-2010, 12:26 AM
Can't believe the overreaction of some people to the draft. People on forums swearing off teams over picks, like some Bronco fans over Tebow. Tebow is obvious a risk/reward pick. He can either work out great, or become nothing. Just like George Foster, Ashley Lelie, Willie Middlebrooks and Jarvis Moss. And those are just Bronco picks. Yeah, they gave up a bit for him but there's still plenty enough other picks to improve the team.
But why Tebow over Clausen?
Skippord
04-23-2010, 12:28 AM
Josh McDaniels didn't like Jimmy Clausen's weird giant retard head I guess
FearedSanctity
04-23-2010, 12:29 AM
It doesn't always have to be who's better, it's who you feel fits what you want, and McDaniels obviously feels Tebow is more what he wants than Claussen
Interesting draft this year. I think Dez Bryant was a good pick for Dallas. I'm surprised Sergio Kindle wasn't taken in the first round. Whoever gets him in the second is getting a steal. Jerry Hughes is also a great player and will probably be a star for Indianapolis pretty soon. Don't know what the Broncos were thinking about with Tebow. Very rarely does reaching for a player like that pay off. I just don't see that working out for them.
Emperor Smeat
04-23-2010, 01:40 AM
Tebow needs to thank Gruden for boosting his draft value by a lot with the whole one-on-one segments he had on ESPN talking about a select few players and Tebow was one of them.
Everyone except Gruden on the booth was shocked and surprised when Tebow got drafted when he should have been a 2nd Round or middle draft round style pick.

The Broncos traded #15 Brandon Marshall before the draft knowing they were going to draft Tebow so they could give him his #15 that he wore in Florida which was the # Marshall wore.

Given that Marshall was unlikely to stay in Denver starting from Week 17, I call BS and just a coincidence. Marshall has so much attachment to 15 that he's making no real effort to take it from Bess in Miami, so I doubt he'd have had a problem giving it up

I wonder who the Rams are taking at 33. I wouldn't mind trading down here, getting hella more picks. Minnesota picking 34th might help us, people might wanna trade up to get Clausen/McCoy. Can't believe McCoy and Clausen are still there.. shit, coulda drafted Suh AND Clausen/McCoy. Kinda hate Clausen, so I guess that's good we don't have him.
The Giants drafting JPP could be a sign that Osi is on his way out, I think they have been trying to shop him... What better place than St.Louis for him, Spags knows him best.

Im tell Sammmy so he knows. I really have no excitement in this draft any further. Its just going to be a letdown. Most likely they will sit at 41 and no pull the trigger, then end up keeping Lynch for no apparent reason.
IT just shows how out of it the Bills are. The NFL is a passing league. And Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey (Dukes of Hazard) are rolling out this "Run First" Offense....like it is some form of new idea. They are swapping to a 3-4, they have no starting tackles, no serviceable QB, and they choose to grab a luxury running back when they already have 2 One Thousand yard backs. I just cant really get into this now. I sit here and listen to AM Sports Talk to listen to Rome, and get the Bills updates.

I know Buffalo is in a position where the fans won't care unless they get a name-brand QB, but I really think they'd be better off waiting a little bit. I really don't think any of the QBs in this draft stand out, so I don't see why Buffalo can't pass on an expensive choice like Clausen and settle for an equally talented guy like Dan LeFevour later on.

I think in the end they would accept no qb, should they have sufficiently addressed need positions.
This is a Team who since 2003 has drafted 3 RBs in the first round....
That is now how you build a team.
They had a Pro Bowl Travis Henry (Pre downfall) and they went cute and drafted McGahee.
Then they trade that 1st round RB for two 3rd round picks, and spend another first to replace him.
Now we have 2 top 12 picks in the backfield, plus a 1000 yeard back from last year who is the starter! THey are just spinning their tires. Now they have no leverage in trading Lynch, and will be lucky to get a 5th since people know he is on the way out.
Its not about passing on a QB, its about watching evbery other team in the East improve, and the Bills have only been sliding backwards for 15 years. New Regime comes in, and makes the same mistakes.
I actually would have been ok with the top 3 picks being a OT, NT and WR and gave Brohm and Edwards one last chance with a new system and nabbed a Locker or Mallet next year...
But this was just pure ass
Hanso Amore
04-23-2010, 03:54 PM
Lets look at the Bills last 6+ drafts.
2003 Willis McGahee Miami (FL) Running Back
2004 Lee Evans Wisconsin Wide Receiver
2004 J.P. Losman Tulane Quarterback
2005 No 1st Round Pick, Roscoe Parrish (2nd Round) Miami (FL) Wide Receiver
2006 Donte Whitner Ohio State Safety
2006 John McCargo North Carolina State Defensive Tackle
2007 Marshawn Lynch California Running Back
2008 Leodis McKelvin Troy Defensive Back
20091 Aaron Maybin Penn State Defensive End/Outside Linebacker
20091 Eric Wood Louisville Center
20101 C.J. Spiller Clemson Running Back
Not one Pro Bowl player.
Maybin barely saw the field, and the Jury is out, but he looks like he could bust. Wood is Solid. WHitner is the block, and is Lynch. If both get traded that means only
McKelvin, Wood, Evans and Spiller would still be Bills. How can you miss that much? The 2nd round is even worse.
7 Drafts, and only 7...maybe less depending on expected cuts and retirements, players remain from the first 2 rounds.

I like the Ravens pick of Sergio Kindle, they had a time with getting a decent pass rush last year and he should help out a lot. Dickerson is also an excellent pick at #70 and if things work out I could see him supplanting HEEEEEEEEEEEEAP by the midway point of the year at TE.
Kiper said he was capable of starting in the NFL Day one, but unless something crazy happens Heap gets the benefit of the doubt to start off even though his time's pretty much past.
Also apparently the nickname for the Cody/Ngata combo is the 700 Club since both of them combined are over 700 lbs and gonna stuff guys up the middle. Was totally amazed Cody fell all the way to the Ravens for the 57th pick.

I've had a few questions myself about the Giants draft this year. However, since Reese has taken over as GM, the Giants have had some solid drafts. They aren't usually flashy, or make a lot of trades, but just have nice, solid, quiet drafts.

Jets traded Leon Washington and a 7th round pick for a 4th which was used on JOHN CONNER. Bummer to see Leon go he is the man, but he is coming off serious injury and wants to "get paid". Plus the Jets took McNight anyway and they have more good kick returners so I don't really see it hurting them at all. They played the second half of last season without Leon. Faneca though :(

My breakdown of the Giants' 2010 Draft Class:
1. DE Jason Pierre-Paul: I like this pick. It may be a bit risky but the dude seems like a really good athlete. Assuming Osi stays I'm still not sure how Fewell plans on using Tuck, Osi, Kiwi, AND JPP but you really can never have too many athletic pass rushers. Interested in seeing how this guy pans out.
2. DT Linval Joseph: A smart move here as the Giants are really questionable at DT. Robbins is gone, Bernard was horrific, Canty was also pretty bad. Hopefully those latter two guys will bounce back and combine that with Alford coming back and the addition of Joseph it could be a really solid DT rotation.
3. S Chad Jones: With the status of Kenny Phillips uncertain, it was a really good decision to get even more extra insurance. If his hands are as good as advertsied should see some playing time. He also has really good speed and could factor in as a punt returner.
4. MLB Phillip Dillard: When the Giants missed on McClain I figured they would get Sean Lee or Brandon Spikes. They were willing to pass on those guys for Dillard though. There are like 4 guys competing for the MLB job so you never know, if he comes out of the gate strong he can start.
5. G Mitch Petrus: Dude seems crazy strong and benched 225 pounds 45 times at the Combine. The Giants desperately need to get younger on the line so this is a good team for him to wind up on. He won't be starting right away or anything but depending on how the aging line plays this year he could look to grab the LG spot from Seubert in 2011.
6. DE/OLB Adrian Tracy: Given the state of the LB corp I'm going to have to assume Tracy will be playing primarily at OLB in pre-season, cause at DE he'd do no better than #5 on the depth chart. It seems like Boley is the only LB guaranteed to start no year so it doesn't hurt getting more competition for the other spots.
7. P Matt Dodge: Initially I assumed he was just going to be brought in to compete with Aussie Rules guy Jy Bond for a practice squad spot to take over for Feagles in 2011, but Feagles may actually retire now. For what its worth he's one of only two punters the Giants felt were worth drafting this year. He also can handle kickoffs, which is a plus as Tynes sucks at kicking off.

Probably a big reason why McD went all out to get Tebow:
"When I went to Gainesville Monday to work him out,'' McDaniels said, referring to his hush-hush trip to spend the day with Tebow, "we spent about seven hours together. We went over a lot of things. Now, understand that our offense is pretty complicated, and the terminology and the scheme is totally different from what he did at Florida. But about midway through my time there, we're going through plays, and he starts using our terminology. He's so smart about football that he was able to begin to speak my language and talk apples to apples. He'd already translated what he knew of our scheme into my words. That's something that carried a lot of weight with me.''Tebow did in a few hours what it took Orton several months to do. Ridiculous

In somewhat positive news, from an interview with Pete Carroll:
Carroll also gushed about a first-round quarterback on whom the Seahawks passed, not once but twice. "I think anybody that got Tim Tebow (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=5096) had a good draft because I think he's going to surprise everybody," Carroll said. "And I think he's going to be a fantastic addition to a team. There's another guy that we would have really liked to have been able to add for the future because of what he brings. He will not let these issues about throwing motions and things be in the way. He will will his way through that if he's anything at all like I know."
The Seahawks coach likewise heaped praise on former Minnesota Golden Gophers receiver Eric Decker (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=5819). "Very, very good receiver," Carroll said, "and we have a guy [previously] on that [Minnesota] staff, Jedd Fisch, who coached him and we knew all about him and really were hoping to get a chance to get him, too."

Amazing directional punter, but his time had come...had no leg strength left which spelled trouble everytime the Giants had to punt from their own end of the field.
If Ray Guy ever got into the HOF (which is really a crime that he hasn't...yeah he's a punter but he was extremely valuable and if it's a football position, there has to have been somebody who was the best at it), I could see Feagles being the 2nd punter to ever get in.

Sean Payton implicated in alleged Vicodin theft at Saints facility (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/05/01/sean-payton-implicated-in-alleged-vicodin-theft-at-saints-facility/)
Posted by Mike Florio on May 1, 2010 12:23 PM ET
On Friday, former Saints director of security Geoffrey Santini sued the team for constructive discharge (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/04/30/lawsuit-against-saints-alleges-loomis-tried-to-cover-up-thefts-of-vicodin/). He alleges that G.M. Mickey Loomis attempted to cover up evidence that Vicodin was being stolen from the team drug locker by two senior staff members.
The lawsuit does not name the two senior staff members. Per the initial filing, Saints trainer Scottie Patton told Santini that one of the unnamed employees has a "painful medical condition," and that the other one does not.
Based on extensive discussions with multiple sources having knowledge of the situation but who have requested anonymity given the sensitive nature of the case, the two unnamed senior staff members are assistant head coach/linebackers coach Joe Vitt and head coach Sean Payton.
Keep in mind that these are only allegations. To date, no proof has been introduced linking either man to the alleged theft, unauthorized use, or abuse of Vicodin from the Saints' drug locker. It is our understanding that the matter has been referred to local federal authorities, and that the matter has been investigated. We don't know whether the investigation has been concluded, or whether it remains active.
Per our sources, Vitt is the staff member with the painful medical condition. Which means that Payton is the staff member who, based on the information provided by Patton to Santini, does not have a painful medical condition.
The Saints declined comment on the matter. Reach by e-mail, V.P. of communications Greg Bensel forwarded his statement from Friday, which initially was given to the New Orleans Times-Picayune (http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2010/04/suit_against_new_orleans_saint.html). "I will not have any other comment nor will I be releasing these names," Bensel told us.
(Here is Bensel's statement from Friday: "A former employee who resigned just before the 2009 regular season threatened to go public with these unfounded charges unless we agreed to pay him an exorbitant sum of money. We refused and now he has gone public. We will aggressively defend these false allegations in court. We will not have any further comment on this matter at this time. Rather we look forward to welcoming our rookie players and want our focus to be on continuing our preparations for the 2010 Football Season and defending our title.")
We've been advised that settlement discussions indeed occurred before the suit was filed, but that an agreement (obviously) was not reached. The lawsuit filing indicates that formal service of the documents has not yet been requested. Once service occurs, the Saints will have a finite period of time within which to respond. Given that the claims implicate federal drug laws, it's possible that the team will remove the lawsuit from Louisiana state court to federal court.
Typically, federal court provides a more level playing field for business interests. Given the extent to which the Saints are locally beloved, however, Santini and his lawyer could have a hard time finding jurors in either the state or federal setting who will be capable of overlooking the fleur-de-lis that has been tattooed onto their souls.

LOL, weather he did it or not is irrelevant to my point, the piont is Kobe was once accused of something similar, which would later "appear" to be unproven. I just found it hypocritical of you to make fun of LT for being accused of a crime, yet defended Kobe like he was a jesus, just saying.
So please, think before you call people idiots, and maybe you won't look so dumb yourself.

He was decent, I dunno if I'd say god awful. His false starts KILLED us though. On the rare occasion that we got over the 50, he would make sure we got back to our own half of the field again.

He won't start, Doug Free probably will, he'll be given a chance to compete, and if he impresses, he might get it. But right now, its Free's job to lose. Barron was brought in to offer some depth to the line, with injuries to Comlumbo and such.

AP re-votes on the Rookie of the Year and Cushing still keeps it.
But, he lost ALOT of votes. Only got 18 votes back from the original 39. Buffalo safety Jairus Byrd came close with 13. The rest got spread out between Clay Matthews III, Brian Orakpo, and Jim Laurinaitis.

Sort of surprised he managed to keep the award but it seems more like the voters didn't believe Byrd was worthy of the award even with a recount because of how the swing votes spread out over too many players.

Cushing tested positive for something that has been used as a masking agent (pretty sure it's not it's only use/it's also produced naturally) so I'm guessing that had something to do with it. It's not like it's 100% proven he was taking anabolics or something. Plus he failed the test in Sept then played all season without failing anymore tests.

9 different NFC teams have gone to the Super Bowl in the past 9 years. I'd never really thought about that. That's pretty ridiculous.
Redskins, Cowboys, 49ers, Packers, Vikings, Lions, and Falcons are the teams that haven't made it. I'd say a few of those teams are realistic possibilities to make it next year and continue the streak, Vikings in particular.

Yeah, Brandon Marshall got a new deal, so now Andre wants to rip this contract up too, which is funny because his contract was reneogotiated a couple of years ago, this is a money grab, plain and simple. Not like a Chris Johnson, who had 2000 yards from scrimmage at a position where the next carry could be your last, and he's on a rookie contract making less than a million I believe.

Exactly. In other leagues and sports I might have a different view of the situation, but this is the NFL. You're not guaranteed shit and each play could be the last. Owners and GMs have no problem cutting people, so they should have no problem when players pull this stunt.

Now of course they could do what Marvin Lewis successfully did with Chad Johnson two years ago and call their bluffs, but we're not talking 30 year old aging stars. We're talking two of the five best players in the NFL. You don't want to mess around with that.

You realize this would be his second contract he's had torn up already, and he's like already 3 years into a contract that was front end loaded, which means he's already been paid a large chunk of change, so pretty much he wants more guarenteed on another contact after getting something like the 8 year 60 million contract he already has. I could see if he was on a rookie contract still, but he got big money from the Texans a couple times already, this just being greedy.

He's working within the system. That's the same system that allows owners to terminate contracts whenever they want. He didn't make the system and he can't change the system. If he gets injured, he'll never see another dime. Why wouldn't he hold out for more money?

You realize he is guarenteed a certain amount of money on that contract right? If he played opening day got injured and never played again, he'd get what was guareenteed to him. He's got 5 years left on a contract he renegeotiated 3 years ago. I read he is guarenteed 25%, which isn't good, but when you let your uncle act as your agent, that shit happens.
I agree with the players when it comes to most labour disputes, because the players aren't being giving guarenteed money with guarenteed contracts, and in the NFL players need to make as much as fast as they can, being the sport it is. But this has nothing to do with it at all, it's about someone not wanting to pay an agent, letting his uncle negeotiate his contract, and then three years later being unhappy with it because the market has changed. Grow up, and man up, and do your fucking job.
Supreme Olajuwon
05-19-2010, 05:21 PM
Why are you getting mad at someone for working within the system? I agree that the whole system needs to be changed, but that's not Johnson's responsibility. He's not going to get anything out of doing the right thing. He's looking out for himself just like everybody else. If he can get more money, why shouldn't he?
IC Champion
05-19-2010, 05:31 PM
So what happens when the Texans don't pay him? And then he sits out?
He's got money, ALOT of money, he saw Larry Fitzgerald and Brandon Marshall get more money, and now he wants more. You realize his contract is shitty because he didn't have a proper agent? So who fault is that?
How is he working within the system, he signed a contract, now he should live up that obligation, instead of threatening to hold on the the team.
Teams and owners don't get to renegeoiate deals with players they feel they are over-paying, the Texans have already given him two different contracts and have done him right, he is just being greedy, and regrets signing his last contract, again who's fault is that?
Supreme Olajuwon
05-19-2010, 06:03 PM
Who cares about fault? This has nothing to do with fault. This is about obligation and opportunity. He has the opportunity to make more money, and the rules of the league don't oblige him to honor his contract, so why can't he make more money?
