BTW I don't mean for those questions to be rhetorical. I really want to know why he shouldn't get more money if he has the opportunity.
Ermaximus
05-19-2010, 05:12 PM
If a guy is clearly worth the money then I say more power to them. Clearly in his defense, he is worth the money, but I just don't get why he'd want to restructure his contract so quickly after having just done so, but that's why he is the professional football player and I'm not.

Who cares about fault? This has nothing to do with fault. This is about obligation and opportunity. He has the opportunity to make more money, and the rules of the league don't oblige him to honor his contract, so why can't he make more money?
Well his obligation is to the team in which he is under contract and paying him. His opportunity to make more money will be when his contract is up in 5 years, or he can sit out and get paid nothing. It's ridiculous that a guy who just HAD his contract restructured, for a second time, is looking for another contract. He had his chance to make more money 3 years ago.
Supreme Olajuwon
05-19-2010, 08:24 PM
Yeah it's ridiculous. No question about it. But like every player in the NFL, he's working under a broken system that allows people to renege on their contracts. Until the league changes the rules, which it probably will when the lockout happens, then good players can take advantage of their stature and hold out for more money.
And why shouldn't they? I'm begging you or anyone to answer this question.
Gonzo
05-19-2010, 09:20 PM
Fuck, if I was a player I would want to get paid whenever it was prudent.
Teams can back out of contracts with players at essentially any time. Holding out is the player's only option to get paid. Look at someone like Chris Johnson. He is still under his rookie contract, and is going to make less than a million this year, like every year so far, to be one of the most productive RBs in the NFL. Unfortunately, since the CBA talks are ongoing, the Titans can't even pay him that much more than he is making even if they wanted to. The only way around it is for the Titans to pay a large sum in the form of a signing bonus. For the Titans, that would be foolish, because at any point on any one play Johnson could get hurt and they lose all that money for no production.
It's a shitty system. I hope they get it worked out.

Teams and owners don't get to renegeoiate deals with players they feel they are over-paying,Yeah they can. They can tell a player we gotta renegotiation or you're gone. Same thing Andre Johnson is saying he is gonna do, we gotta renegotiate or I'm not playing. He won't do it though
Plus guaranteed money isn't even always guaranteed. Mike Vick had to pay back some of his signing bonus didn't he? That makes no sense to me.

And the owners want a lock out.
It's ridiculous.
Jesus Shuttlesworth
05-22-2010, 12:32 AM
It's a little more complicated than that. Players want a higher percentage of the league's overall revenues, which may not seem like that big of a deal but it can get pretty complicated. Especially when the salary cap has been set off of the AVERAGE revenues of all 32 teams, so for a team like the Redskins (most profitable team in the NFL) only about 50% of their revenues goes towards paying players where as a team like the Vikings (least profitable team in the NFL) sees about 75% of theirs going towards paying players. That happens because the players are getting 62% of the average figure. It doesn't take into account what each individual team profits or has to pay out to players. The cap & the average helps eliminate the problems that other leagues have with teams w/ the most money spending the most on players but it can create problems for teams on the "business" side.
Plus some owners want more revenue sharing & others don't, right now they only share the gate, TV money & sales from licensed NFL products. Teams that make a ton of money really don't want to share a lot of the other things that create revenue, such as luxury box sales, naming rights, concession sales, etc. Teams that do want to increase revenue sharing no longer want to see such a large percentage of their revenues going towards playing the players when other franchises aren't paying anywhere near the same percentage.
Professional sports are pretty complicated and aren't run or operated like a lot of "normal" businesses, they really can't be when you think about it. They even play under a different set of rules from the government, a lot of anti-trust laws don't apply the same way as they would for every other business.
My favorite part of the whole lockout is that Indianapolis's Superbowl goes poof. It's great. People think Lebron leaving Cleveland is devestating. Indy losing the Superbowl in 2012 is devestating. The money that has been put into this already. I'm gunna be crushed.

I know they got a new stadium but I don't really see Indianapolis as a hot spot for a Super Bowl. I'm sure it's a great city and everything but I've never felt, or have I ever heard anyone say, "Wow I really wanna take a trip to Indianapolis!"

As Gary Myers of the New York Daily News pointed out in late March, 11 teams were inclined to support the bid: the Giants, Jets, Patriots, Falcons, Eagles, Cowboys, Browns, Chargers, Packers, Vikings, and Broncos.
Five teams were opposed: the Texans, Steelers, Bills, Cardinals, and Ravens. The Buccaneers and the Dolphins presumably are part of this crowd, too, given that they also are trying to get the game.

Dear Brandon,
Congratulations!
Your wait on the Broncos Waiting List is over, and you are now eligible to purchase Denver Broncos season tickets. Your 2010 season ticket package consists of 2 preseason home games, 8 regular season home games, and the ability to purchase any home playoff games.
Was not expecting this until next year. I JUST got a new job and I have to buy the tickets by June 9th.
In fairness to those who continue to wait for seats, if you elect not to purchase season tickets for the 2010 season, you have the option of moving to the end of the waiting list (about a 7 to 10 year wait) or being removed from the season ticket waiting list.

Maybe someone with a season ticket history can answer this one, but if I buy 1 this year, will I still be able to get 2 next year? I'm on the list for 2, but no way I can afford more than one this year. When I go to buy tickets its let's me order up to 4 or 5, but I dunno if that's just for the initial purchase and it'll remember for the future or if it'll just apply to this year

Depends if anyone else buys the seats next to your seat since a season ticket only guarantees the seat or seats you reserved that year (or in set of years).
If the team is a big name or has high demand tickets then it probably won't be possible (ex. Packers in NFL, Red Sox in MLB, Maple Leafs in NHL).
Edit: Only read the last post before replying but since your getting Broncos tickets and the email told you about the whole waiting list, you most likely won't be able to buy that 2nd seat if you skip out this year.
RoXer

How much are they and where are the seats?
FearedSanctity
05-27-2010, 05:30 PM
At best, $440 per season ticket for the seats way up in the nosebleeds, but centered right in the middle of the stadium in the seats with the Broncos logo painted on them
At worst, $770 for endzone/plaza level seating for either end.
First year ticket holders are limited to what sections they can buy for, but after the first year they can upgrade.
Think I remember reading something about that current holders get first dibs on new seats, but I'm not sure if that applies to adding new seats. All I know is they say the most you can have at one time is 4. Will have to research more when I get home

Dude you gotta do it. It may be a burden financially, but at the worst you sell off the tickets this year. You may even make a profit. If you don't get them you'll be kicking yourself. My dad and I are paying a small fortune for Giants season tickets, but once we pay the PSL the cost of the actual tickets (in my opinion) isn't vastly unreasonable. The Giants season ticket waiting list is a lot longer than 7-10 years too, so that factored in to our decision. My dad was on the list for about 25 years.

The Panthers WR broke his arm while horsing around at his football camp. No, it wasn't on this high-five, but it was almost as embarrassing.
Steve Smith mostly survived seven years of being hung out to dry over the middle by Jake Delhomme (with only a broken leg and fractured arm to show for it.) I'm not sure if facing an eight-year-old QB at his youth camp was an upgrade or not, but things didn't end well there either.
Smith was playing defensive back, for some reason, in a game of flag football with his campers. He reached for an overthrown ball and tumbled to the ground, breaking his arm near the same place as he did last season. He had a plate put in late last night, and will miss much of training camp.
The Steve Smith Football Camp (http://www.procamps.com/stevesmith) experience sounds like a good time. For just $189, campers get to spend the weekend extinguishing any playoff hopes the Panthers might have had. And also they get a t-shirt.

John Elway and Josh McDaniels loathe losing more than bare-knuckle champion Jim Corbett detested solar plexus punches and ancient Athenians hated solar eclipses.
Josh & John lost bad the other day.
As teammates for the first time, El and McD were beaten in a golf match at Cherry Hills Country Club by a pair of gadflies — Joe Ellis, Broncos chief operating officer, and Mark Thewes, the coach's assistant. "We lost by one," McDaniels said.
But the game was a win-win for the Broncos, McDaniels and Elway in a new partnership.
Ellis said Saturday: "I think the 4½ hours John and Josh spent together was great for them and the franchise."
McDaniels said: "I've really enjoyed being around John. He means so much to the Broncos, Denver and the NFL. We've had fun, and I look forward to John having a relationship with the Broncos, Pat Bowlen and me well into the future."
Elway said: "I've gotten to know Josh, and I'd like to get to know him even better and assist him and the Broncos whatever way I can. Josh knows what he wants and how to get there."
Elway, who engineered more comebacks than any other quarterback in NFL history, wants one more comeback with the Broncos.
The Broncos want John to come back.
The Broncos and Elway have agreed that the Hall of Fame quarterback will be an asset with the team's business operations in "marketing initiatives," particularly in advance of the team's game in London, and will observe practices and consult with McDaniels on football matters.
This is a super development. It was too long coming. Lamentably, the Broncos and Elway have been estranged since he retired 11 years ago.
Elway will be a half-century old on Monday. He joined the Broncos more than a quarter-century ago. He was, and remains, the face of the franchise.
In our conversation about his 50th birthday, Elway was emphatic about "getting involved" with the Broncos again "and see where it goes from there."
Ellis said the Broncos and Elway have "low-keyed" his return, but Bowlen "is happy about John's interest. After all, John not only raised the Broncos to a championship level, but he was one of the few players responsible for raising the entire level of attention for the NFL.
"Of course, we want him involved with the Broncos. We want John coming to our headquarters, talking football and helping us in many different areas."
Echoing Elway's words, Ellis said: "We'll see where it leads."
McDaniels opens door
The Hall of Fame quarterback attended a recent minicamp workout (closed to the media, so it went unreported). McDaniels told me Saturday that Elway is "welcome any time to Dove Valley. I look forward to that as head coach. He is the greatest Bronco of all time and someone all our players should know and respect. We can benefit from John's knowledge, presence and experience."
John wasn't as welcomed before.
There was a breakdown between Elway and Mike Shana- han.
"Honestly, some things went on between Mike and me," said Elway, who wouldn't elaborate.
In 1984, Shanahan was brought in by Dan Reeves as a 32-year-old assistant (same age as McDaniels when he took the Broncos' head coaching job) to work specifically with Elway. The two became virtually inseparable, especially when Shanahan was elevated to offensive coordinator. Shanahan left in '87 to become head coach of the Raiders.
When Shanahan was fired abruptly in '89, Bowlen ordered Reeves to rehire him. But Reeves believed Shanahan and Elway secretly scripted plays behind his back. Shana- han was fired in 1991. In '95, he returned as head coach and reunited with Elway.
Elway said: "I told Mike I understood the relationship between head coach and player. My father (Jack) was a coach. I told him I wouldn't cross the line, but he made sure I didn't."
However, even after Shana- han and Elway won two Super Bowls (after losing three together) and John retired, the abyss widened, because Bowlen had shouted "this one's for John" after the first title, Shanahan didn't want Elway in an executive role, and if the coach won without Elway, that one would be for Shanahan.
So, John was persona non grata at Dove Valley until Mc- Daniels reached out to Elway.
"Don't need a job title"
At the end of Elway's career, Bowlen offered to sell him up to 20 percent of the ownership, and Elway eventually would become COO. Elway declined; he didn't want then to be a minority shareholder.
That proposed deal prompted former owner Edgar Kaiser, who had maneuvered the Elway acquisition, to file a lawsuit, claiming he had first right-of-refusal. Litigation dragged through federal and state courts for years before a final ruling in Bowlen's favor in 2007.
Elway would be willing if Bowlen made the offer again. They were owners (with Stan Kroenke) of the defunct Colorado Crush arena football team. "I did that because I wanted to be in football again," Elway said. "I got the experience on the ownership and personnel side, and I was ready for the NFL . . . Would I like to be part owner of the Broncos? Yes."
Bowlen repeatedly has said he will not sell the franchise.
With a new regime, Elway was enthused about ending the split.
"It's easier to be involved now. I don't need a job title. I don't want to call shots. It's not necessarily day-to-day, but if I can help Josh, Pat and Joe get this franchise back on track, that's important. It's just a matter of being the guy there who if you wanted a different point of view, I can give it."
Would he want to coach? "Oh, yeah. Being off to the side and working it that way . . . spending time with the quarterbacks and the offense."
Elway has been impressed with McDaniels. "He's considered too young at 34, and I was considered too old at 34. The players, I can tell you, don't give a rat's (behind) if he's 34 or 64. You want a man who can motivate, teach you, coach you to a championship. Josh can do that."
John also has linked up with Tim Tebow. "He texted me when he got to Denver. I watched him practice. I've talked to him. I like him a whole lot. People say he doesn't have the perfect release, but I didn't have a perfect release. You can fix that.
"When Tim came to my (birthday party), we had a long talk. What I told him is that in pro football, the window of accuracy is this small (he spreads his hands 18 inches), not this big (3 feet). Those complete passes in college are incompletions and interceptions in the NFL. You don't get better at accuracy in the weight room. You throw thousands of passes. He's got the natural talent and the smarts. But he's got to throw, throw, throw."
John threw for 56,439 yards (regular season and postseason) and set the record for quarterback victories.
Legendary No. 7 strives to come back to help the Broncos get back.

Cedric Benson arrested for punching somebody in the face at a bar. Probably not gonna get punished but strategically speaking, if Benson was suspended for the first four games of the season, that would probably be beneficial for him and the Bengals. Still can't believe Bears chose him over Thomas Jones as their primary RB when Jones had less off-field and attitude issues and was a better pounder style RB than Benson. They made the big mistake in tying too much money with Benson to be a #2 or 3rd down RB though.
If I remember correctly, most of teammates favored Jones over Benson and hated the Bears getting rid of Jones.

Ryan Leaf was horrible mostly because he fell apart under the pressure of the NFL and was horrible as a team-mate. Russell managed to outperform Leaf in terms of horrible play style, no passion for football, and declining development.

Why are the Rams going to break the rookie signing record on a player who has a known injury and might be serious enough to re-injury like Bradford did while at Oklahoma?
I think NFL and the teams should have learned from JaMarcus Russell situation as a reason to not break the bank on a rookie and change the whole rookie salary involving guaranteed cash. Even last year's #1 pick ended up getting hurt and missed some games although not as serious as Bradford during college.
Supreme Olajuwon
07-17-2010, 01:08 AM
Because why would you alienate your potential franchise star and make him the example? If there's gonna be a change, the league has to do it. Teams will never do it.
Emperor Smeat
07-17-2010, 01:30 AM
I understand Rams don't want to do anything that would make them look dumb or alienate their fans who wanted him as a player but it doesn't help that Bradford is holding out until he gets the record deal (in terms of guaranteed money) while also coming off a pretty serious injury.
It just seems odd how every year teams and people talk about reigning in the rising rookie costs but every year when it comes to meetings, the league decides against it.
Supreme Olajuwon

The main issue is Tebow and his agent want Dez Bryant spot money since both feel he is more valuable than Bryant even though Tebow was taken 1 pick below Bryant. Also wants a bigger guaranteed amount of his contract than what the Broncos or his draft pick's spot offered.

I hate that whole "Terrell Owens is a locker room poison" horseshit. When he was in Dallas the media always tried to make trouble where there wasn't any. Ed Reed apparently tried to renegotiate last year and is dealing with a nasty hip injury this year which has made the 6-time Pro Bowler contemplate retiring or taking a pay cut to play with another team. The Ravens have stated they are comfortable with the contract which prompted Reed’s statements.
Reed said he has spoken with general manager Ozzie Newsome, chief negotiator Pat Moriarty and team owner Steve Bisciotti about his situation over the past year.
“The word I got was, ‘We’re comfortable with where we’re at,’” Reed said. “Yes, you would be comfortable with the plays that I’m making on the field and paying me what you’re paying me. .. There are six, seven players in front of me at my position [in terms of money] that I honestly wouldn’t let hold my jock, and I don’t even wear one.’”

Robert Kraft alludes to signing Brady to a huge deal. Hopefully it happens soon
It wouldn't be at the level of distraction of when Brady was expecting his 1st child or like a few previous players who hated being "tagged" but contract disputes can become messy if it lasts over the season.
Kraft basically got cornered into this situation since he persuaded Brady years ago to leave money on the table to make the team better so naturally Brady wants some of that money back. At the same time he is part of the group of owners who are expected to meet with the union to discuss reducing salaries and wreck-less spending.
Kraft would lose a lot of power and support if he just went out and gave Brady a mega deal while telling other owners and players they can't.

Everyone knows the Patriots are cheap, I wouldn't be surprised if a deal never got done, and Brady went elsewhere. Not likely, but I wouldnt be shocked given the history of the Patriots and paying players.

I watched the Vikings/Saints NFC championships game on NFL Network today.
Man what an incredible choke by the Vikings. I'm not even talking about the Favre play even though that to was a choke. Vikings pretty much did what they wanted against the Saints. Best think Saints did was take kind of cheap shots on Favre which is basically what they did.
Also the only way the Saints could stop Adrian Peterson was if he fumbled the ball, because he was running bitches over. All time choke of a game.

Here's another reason Brett Favre should stay retired this time: Turns out The Daily Line's Jenn Sterger (http://www.versus.com/shows/the-daily-line/cast/jenn-sterger/) has kept a ridiculously disturbing (but HILARIOUS) secret about her interactions with The Gunslinger while they were both part of the Jets organization.
For those who don't know (or forget) who Jenn Sterger is: formerly buxom (http://deadspin.com/5400462/jenn-sterger-says-goodbye-to-some-old-friends) Florida State Cowgirl (http://deadspin.com/141528/florida-states-diligent-student-body) who gained internet notoriety for being a buxom Florida State fan who parlayed that popularity into a full-time career. She did Maxim shoots (http://www.maxim.com/girls/girls-of-maxim/93013/jenn-sterger.html). Playboy shoots (http://www.121s.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=5157&m=). She wrote a "Confessions of a Cowgirl" column (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/writers/jenn_sterger/archive/index.html) for Sports Illustrated. Then, in 2008, Ms. Sterger joined the Jets (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/galleries/a_closer_look_at_jenn_sterger/a_closer_look_at_jenn_sterger.html) as an in-house sideline reporter. It was during that fateful time that her and Mr. Favre's paths began to cross. Sort of.
Last winter, close to the Super Bowl, Ms. Sterger and I were discussing a possible collaboration on the proposed "Deadspin Swimsuit Project," which turned into a conversation about the whole "athlete dong photo (http://deadspin.com/tag/athletedong/)" phenomenon. She claimed that she's been on the receiving end of several of those types of cell phone interactions by drunk men, some of whom were professional athletes. We later had a phone conversation about who some of the more well-known dong-shot senders were. One person, she claimed, who was very into cell phone-donging her was none other than Brett Favre. Now, at one point in his career, this news wouldn't be too surprising. Favre's time in Green Bay is littered with stories about his boozing and carousing. But gray-haired Favre? Oh yeah, she said. Sterger said that Favre first began to call her early in the season and leave strange, friendly messages on her voicemail. She played me one of these voicemails over the phone. It was Brett turning on the Mississippi simpleton charm on his way to practice giving Jenn a friendly good ol' boy hello to a pretty lady. It was odd, but nothing incriminating. Then the phone calls from Brett started to turn weird.
Sterger claimed she spurned Favre's advances because he was married, but also because she was working for the Jets at the time she didn't think it was the best idea to start a torrid affair with the team's highest profile player (the Jets have not responded to a question about any knowledge of the Favre/Sterger saga at this time). Plus, if she went forward with how aggressive he was and how skeeved out she was to some of her superiors, she suspected she might lose her job. The interactions were flirty and strange but she didn't think there wasn't anything that made her too uncomfortable. But then, one night, Sterger received a picture on her phone which was so shocking that she just tossed it across the room. It was his dick. Brett Favre's dick. And it happened multiple times. In fact, Sterger claims that, in one of the photos Favre allegedly sent her, he's masturbating — while wearing a pair of Crocs. In another photo, Favre is holding his penis while wearing the wristwatch he wore during his first teary-eyed retirement press conference. You know, this one:
http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/11/2010/08/500x_favrewatches.jpg (http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/11/2010/08/favrewatches.jpg)
But soon after Jenn told me this story, she balked about releasing the photos or voicemails she still had on her computer. They were still on her computer because they were fun to laugh at amongst friends, but she never planned to sell them or use them to bolster her profile. We invited her in into the Gawker Media lair many times to have a nice discussion about what we could do with the photos and how they could be presented and how she wouldn't look bad in the process if she just had fun with it. Alas, that didn't happen. When this Favre conversation first took place, Jenn started on Vs.' "The Daily Line" show so this wasn't the added publicity she wanted or need at the time. Plus, she really didn't want her name attached to this whatsoever. And I was told by her to keep my big mouth shut. Here's her email to me on February 15, 2010:
AND NOT A WORD OF THAT SHIT TO ANYONE.
I like ya AJ... and if there is a way to expose this dude for the creepy douche he is WITHOUT me being attached to it in any way that is fine. I just want to make it clear I never met him, saw him, etc... because I don't roll that way. That way meaning old.. or married. Some big boobed hoes have morals and souls believe it or not..
I agreed, but still persisted because I'm a dick and it's an incredibly funny story, but one that didn't really hold any real weight unless she either gave us the A.) photos B.) voicemails C.) attached her name to it. She was reluctant to do so up until yesterday because I pressed her on it:
Okay, here's the deal:
I'm very close to running your Favre allegations today. I've spoken to the Jets about this. So let me know how you want to proceed, please. I'd prefer you were on the record about this stuff, but I understand if you don't want to be. However, I do have our email conversations we had and, frankly, that's enough to get this started.
Not trying to dick you over, but, there was no way I was going to sit on it forever, either.
So lemme know.
Her Blackberry was messed up, though. However, she did respond by saying she would (finally) go on the record with her tales of Favre's creepy cell phone stalking:
I can... as soon as I get this thing back and running.. or you could meet me in person on my way to studio in a few hours.
So I'm gonna say she's settled on C. There's no turning back now. But who knows? Jenn and I never connected yesterday, either in person or on the phone. Maybe those photos will surface at this point since I assume many people would like to hear her side of this story, given it's a helluva lot more interesting than any retirement rope-a-dopes.
And there's no real evidence that Favre's been horndoggin' it throughout the latter part of his NFL career. Maybe he was just lonely while he spent time in New York and sought some companionship with Sterger who, if you hadn't noticed, does resemble his wife, Deanna (http://b4tea.com/entertainment/brett-favre-wife-deanna-favre-deanna-favre-bio-pictures). One thing that is notable is this: it turns out that Brett watched last year's Super Bowl at home in Mississippi. He didn't watch it alone, however. According to one source, he watched the Saints miraculously defeat the Colts in the company of one special guest: Tiger Woods. I wonder what those guys talked about?
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->Send an email to A.J. Daulerio, the author of this post, at ajd@deadspin.com (ajd@deadspin.com?subject=http://deadspin.com/5603701/brett-favre-once-sent-me-cock-shots-not-a-love-story).
