Is Alberto Del Rio too big for a midcard title?
I know he's only been around for a few months and he hasn't won a single title in WWE yet, but the way he's been pushed, he seems much larger than an Intercontinental or a United States champion. It doesn't feel forced, either. He just seems like he's supposed to be there, almost like it's his...destiny... :shifty:
Do you think Del Rio would benefit from a midcard title run, or should his first title be a major one? |
I think Del Rio would benefit from having a medium title because it will make him more credible when he gets the world title. Will he be credible if he gets the world title tomorrow? Yes but there will be some ppl who will say, "Yo, why is he already world champ?/He is being overpushed wtf!". Now I aint one of them but u know what I mean.
Also it would benefit WWE in a big way because the title will have more prestige and after Del Rio has a good run with it he will make his world title win more memorable / interesting, so I think Del Rio COULD win the world title first but I think it would be better if he won IC/US first and had a good long run sort of like JBL did before he became world. |
Could the same be said for John Morrison?

Morrison has already won 19 undercard titles.
|
I think Alberto Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez should win the tag straps, now that I think about it.
|
I'm not saying Morrison is ready for a world title, but would a midcard title be a step back?
|
I dunno. I think a midcard title might be good for Morrison just to keep pace, so to speak. It would remind people that he is SORTA somebody.
|
They should build him like a major threat with a medium title. When say Trips had the IC belt he was still a very real threat to the WWF title. If they can run him like that then it can work. Otherwise he risks being lost in midcard hell.

Very very few WWE superstars have won the World Title or WWE Title without first winning the IC or US Title. It's just the pecking order of things. I would love to see Del Rio be the first guy in a long long time to take the IC Title and then win the World Title while still holding the IC Title belt. Can't remember last time this happened.
|
Personally I don't think he is sure he may have beat Rey Mysterio in his debut match but since then hasn't done much to surpass that accolade which that said though RR could be the turning point I suppose. Now that the match has been extended to 40 that would be a feather in the cap to make it all come to fruition but if a heel is to take it i'd rather it be someone more established like CM Punk it this point. Heck Carlito won the US Championship in his debut match against John Cena of all people and look how quickly his carreer plateaued as a midcarder and then went to curtain jerking near the end. Then you had Umaga who starting out squashing guys to beating several soon to be HOF and he pretty much suffered the same fate once they wanted to push a new face main event in Jeff Hardy. For me he is a lock to be an IC Champion but I don't think he's quite there yet he's still too green imho to headline a credible WM main event just yet so i'd have to say no and that is my final answer.
|
I don't think he's green. He's been wrestling for 53 years.
|
No, I actually would prefer if Del Rio went after a midcard title first. It would solidify his standing in the company more. I don't think he should be going anywhere near the World Title yet. it probably will be him vs. Edge at Mania which is a fresh match so in that regard I can't complain, but I would rather him go after the IC title. Him and Kofi would have good matches.
|
Ugh fuck him going after the IC title. LOL "green" god n00bs are stupid.

The Schlong says this........
It would be wise to give Rio's the IC strap and take it off of Kofi's hands.....I always thought the united states title is a joke that has been running a tad too long. Actually drop the United States tag on it and change it to the Television championship. I would totally buy Alberto Del Rio WWE Television Champ....this will allow him to be able to jump back and forth from Raw to Smackdown, it will bring the brands together as well as keep them separate. I mean in the Golden Age of ECW.....RVD became who he is because he was a television champ for almost 2 years I believe.....who cared if Taz was World Champ.....RVD WAS GOLD TV!!!!. Morrison is like that natural jock that can't read a playbook. I mean he totally sucks because of this......I mean...we went from the Shaman of Sexy to the Prince of Parkour? Morrison....go to ROH, they work with character quagmires. I like Del Rio though....he has a very convincing character...and very good skill set. He would be like a Hispanic JBL. |
However, that is why PG is killing the WWE in the long run....you have all these characters that are not allowed to have an edge....or if they do....its very predictable.
Ziggler, Del Rio, The Miz, Ryder, CM Punk, would have faired better in Attitude Era. It is really a challenge now. I remember when Stone Cold and Triple H beat the shit out of the Hardy's and Lita. Now........Cena Kisses Vickie!!!! |

to win that belt should almost guarantee that you are on for bigger and better things, IE, a World title shot.... Quote:
Sheamus, Undertaker, Batista.... those are three very, very legitimate names that have never won the IC belt. |
Del Rio is boring as hell.
That is all. |

...so should Del Rio win Money in the Bank? |

Give him the strap and let him run with it at . Swagger was champ for god sakes.

No midcard for Alberto.... he is too strong.... Morrison is not ready for the big time.....
|
He doesn't need an IC run so why give him one? He's a great performer and is booked strongly. That's all you need.
I disagree with all the Morrison hate in here. He just needs a couple of tweaks and he'll be fine. He needs to escape the whole retro rocker thing. |

lol for you to state as a fact that he is boring is ridiculous though. I mean I understand if you find him boring, but the guy is over as hell, and oozes awesomeness. You need to at least acknowledge the fact that he is hella talented, doesn't mean you have to like him.

I didn't say you were bitching. I said you were being a bitch. There's a difference.
|
He should become Intercontinental Champ at WM and defend it for around 5 months or so, then he can put someone else over massively and drop the title to them before making a world title push. Wrestlers are getting the WHC/WWE title too quickly these days.

the only titles i want del rio to win are the tag titles leading to a world title.

Del Rio is a boring, "cookie-cutter", piece of shit. Nothing he's ever said has surprised or entertained me.

If Morrison or Del Rio got one of the midcard titles, it would be worthless. No one would care. It would be like a prop, instead of championship.

A.L. I did not insult your opinion, I just said you should at least acknowledge the fact that the guy obviously knows what he's doing.
I don't like HHH but the guy knows what he's doing, for example. |
But I'm not going to applaud the man for being so uninteresting that I can barely stand it, whether that's his intention or not. Putting on adequate matches doesn't impress me, especially in the wake of all the hype he receives.

I think Del Rio needs some top tier feud or big game match. I dont think he needs a midcard title. It wouldnt hurt him but I dont think he needs one.
|
Who would you suggest for that feud? For some reason, I see him working well with Orton.
|
CM Punk, or a technical wrestler.
|
Morrison was a former ECW WORLDDDD Champion

I thought his push was due in part to Rey Mysterio nearing retirement, if so, I'm all for his push to the Main Event level.
|
Nothing wrong with him going after an IC/US title since it gives the WWE a "test" run of Del Rio as a champion and frees up more time to plan for a potential heavyweight title feud for him.
If anything, Del Rio can trash talk of how easy it was for him to be a "lower" level champion and how nobody can stop him from winning any title he wants. |

John Morrisson has what it takes to be the next HBK. Whether or not WWE realizes this.... bares to mind. |
A mid-card title run wouldn't hurt him, but he doesn't need it. He has that "It" factor.

I think he could carry Smackdown if he had to. That said, right now is a little early to give him the title and there are so many more non-title feuds left before he needs to become a permanent fixture in the main event. But he absolutely doesn't need the US or IC title. I'd rather him just keep feuding with top guys for now.
|
I missed where someone called him green. Really? LOL wow. Do a youtube search.
|
If WWE is intent on giving hima sustained Main Event push then I don't have a problem with him winning "The Big One" first. As has been mentioned, the likes of Batista, Lesnar, Taker all by-passed the midcard titles and I think it adds a helluva lot of "star quality" to a guy to be able to do that.
Having said that...I'm not as sold on the guy as pretty much 90% of TPDub seems to be. As for the IC Title, I was hoping Swagger would pick it up during one of the recent Triple Threats with Ziggler and Kofi but that didn't happen. So, my vote goes to "Dashing" Cody Rhodes. |
I prefer Del Rio to Ziggles. There, I said it.
|
Whooooooooooaaaaaaaaa, let's check ourselves there. Del Rio is the man, but Dolph Ziggler is that DUDE.
|
Hey don't get me wrong, I like that dude. Del Rio just does it more for me.
|
I'm not really "feeling" him skipping the midcard title step.
|
He does have a lot of charisma, he sorta reminds me of a weird hybrid of Pepé Le Pew and The Rock.
|

He doesn't need a mid tier title at all...he's already shown himself to be "superior" to most midcarders (see: him making Daniel Bryan tap, beating Kingston, beating R-Truth twice, etc etc), so why does he need to hold onto a title within a division where he's easily top dog?
Look, Sheamus got the WWE title with even less build, and Del Rio is, if anything, a whole helluva lot more polished than Sheamus was at the time. He can easily pull off a smarmy heel champ for a couple of months, and him grabbing a title quick would fit perfectly with his persona. |

I didn't know that defeating the likes of Chris Jericho, Edge, Kofi Kingston, Randy Orton and Big Show could be considered as a "Failed experiment of a Champion".
|
The only belt that is worth gracing Alberto Del Rio's waist is the World Heavyweight Championship.
|
Back to back great posts from Guru Dave. Wow.

No, Alberto Del Rio is not too big for a midcard title. He is quite slim.
Mark Henry is probably too big for a midcard title. Or any title aside from his specially made ECW belt. |

I actually do think that Alberto Del Rio is too high on the card for a mid-card title. The WWE have done a great job of intergrading him right into the main event mix credibly. They pretty much openly say he is one of the top stars on SmackDown!, and I'm pretty sure they'd present Kofi Kingston beating him as an upset. I'd much rather see Kofi (who I feel has done about as much as he can with the IC Title), work with guys that are below him on the card, and help establish them.
Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater and Tyler Reks are three guys the WWE has expressed interest in pushing that come to mind. I'd prefer all three with the IC Title, and not because I like them more than Del Rio -- I just think they could use it more. I think it might be too early for Del Rio to win the Royal Rumble, but I'd like to see him get a bit of a gladiator run, eliminate some guys, show off that he is both tough and crafty, only to be eliminated right near the end. His destiny seemingly crushed, Del Rio becomes deranged in achieving his destiny -- the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania. I wouldn't mind seeing Del Rio do a Lance Storm type thing, where once he is World Heavyweight Champion, he offers the face IC Champion a chance to face him for the title -- as long as he puts the IC Title on the line. Del Rio wins that match. Then he and Ricardo Rodriguez can win the WWE Tag Team Titles together. Triple Crown at one time, baby. I wouldn't expect it to last long, but I think that Del Rio is a character and performer that could pull that off. |
Looks like Noid is going Val Venus on this one.
