UFC 141 Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem

Quote:

Brock Lesnar will return to the UFC octagon in a five-round main event Dec. 30 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, facing newly signed former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem.
"Brock is a big name, a dangerous guy, and this is a dream matchup," Overeem told The Times on Tuesday, just after signing a standard UFC fight contract in the office of Chairman Lorenzo Fertitta. "Brock's a big guy, an exciting wrestler with his takedowns.
"I want to see this fight myself. Overall, I'm a different fighter. A striker, athletic, big. These are going to be two big trucks going at it on a collision course."
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Overeem, 31, is a former K-1 kickboxing champion too, He most recently defended his Strikeforce belt in June with a unanimous decision over takedown specialist Fabrio Werdum, who had previously defeated Fedor Emelianenko.

Lesnar has been out of action since losing his UFC heavyweight belt to Cain Velasquez in October at Anaheim's Honda Center, suffering a return episode of the intestinal ailment diverticulitis.
The Dec. 30 winner will be first in line to fight the winner of a Nov. 12 fight between Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos.
"This is the fight the fans want," UFC President Dana White said. "Both of these guys are monsters. Can Lesnar take Overeem down?"
Fertitta said the Strikeforce belt won't be part of the promotion. The UFC has purchased Strikeforce.
"Our thinking when we bought Strikeforce was to give fans the fights they want," Fertitta said. "Obviously, Alistair's one of the best heavyweights in the world, but he also has that 'it' factor -- the tremendous look, he's huge. It's a star factor."
Overeem said he's exploring setting up training headquarters in Los Angeles.

Brock Lesnar vs Alistair Overeem? December 30!! OH SHIT!!!latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/20…

wow

Next Big Thing 09-06-2011 03:46 PM

That fight is going to do huge PPV numbers. Especially once Overeem starts getting the UFC hype up.

Krimzon7 09-06-2011 03:56 PM

Meh. Seriously, MEH. There's no way Brock can withstand a knee, much less a goddamn overeem right see what I did here? Bring car win or Mir in for the REEM....not Brock, Dana is cashing in on brock's dying fetal position legacy

Shaved Monkey 09-06-2011 04:20 PM

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...brockdance.gif

Brock is a dead man walking. He`s going to eat an UberKnee to the face and it`s going to be all over.

alvarado52 09-06-2011 06:43 PM

Shock the world Brock.

CSL 09-06-2011 06:58 PM

I take Brock, I think he wrestles him and wins and maybe even finishes him, Overeem's cardio isn't going to do him favours with Brock lying on him.

Next Big Thing 09-06-2011 07:04 PM

I don't know if I'd be that shocked. Maybe mildly surprised... my eyebrow may be raised... I might say hmmm to myself... but I dunno about shocked.

All kidding aside, Werdum actually outstruck Overeem when they did stand up and outside of him, Overeem has fought absolute clowns the past 3 years. I think peeps get excited because he's jacked and won a kickboxing tournament while being given cans to crush in MMA by Strikeforce and Japan.

Say what you want about Brock, but he's been battle tested against much better opponents and has the wrestling skills to fare pretty well.

Shaved Monkey 09-06-2011 07:14 PM

If Brock can get the take down early, sure, I could see him maybe getting a stoppage. If Overeem lands anything Brock is going to turtle up and I doubt Overeem punches himself out like Carwin did.

Mr. JL 09-06-2011 09:07 PM

Alistair Overeem is not the unrelenting Cain Velasquez.

I think Overeem is going to get taken down and Lesnar is going to ground and pound him out much like he did to Mir.

The Show Off 09-06-2011 11:34 PM

Alistair Overeem better hope he knocks Brock out in the first round because if he doesn't Brock will beat him.

Overeem's cardio is highly suspect and Brock even after taking a 5 minute beating from Carwin still came out fairly fresh.

Obviously, Overeem has what it takes to knock out Brock, and Brock isn't good at taking shots, and that's not one of those things you can easily learn.

If I were to put money down, I would put it on Brock, but not without some trepedation.

Reavant 09-06-2011 11:52 PM

Overeem is not the same kind of striker that cain and shane are. Im not saying theyre better, but they are different. Much more aggressive and focused on just hands. Overeem is more calculating and likes to kick. Plus he doesnt wing the amount of power in his strikes that the other two guys do.

Lesnar was fucked because he got blitzed and either cain or shane wouldnt let up. He couldnt think and folded. If overeem thinks hes going to pick his shots, hes going to end up on his back before he can get off.

That's a good point, the thing I fear though is Brock bum rushing, like he did at the beginning of the Cain fight, and getting crushed with a well timed knee might put Brock down.

Still, your explaination will be one I use when discussing this with my MMA friends. Thanks.

I am not too sure Brock will bum rush him like he did Cain. I think Brock thought his best chance against Cain was exploding out of the gate and catching him early because he knew Cain had cardio for days. With Overeem, he's not known for great endurance so he may draw the fight out and test his cardio.

Reavant 09-07-2011 01:14 AM

Gotta give Reem credit, during negotiations Zuffa offered him the winner of Velasquez/Dos Santos as his first UFC fight and he turned it down because he wanted to get one more fight in for 2011.

JERRY 09-09-2011 10:33 AM

this fight sound like king kong versus gorilla but my opinions I think that Mr. Lesnar will defeat Ovareem because Lesnar has been working hard and has amazing staminas while ovareem get tired after one round because steroid muscle. Also ovareem cant wrestle but Lesnar wrestle legend but lesnar cant punch but I think this time Lesnar go to school and learn punch so he is world champions again.

predict lesnar make Ovareem submission for round two.

this will be a fight for years.

Am cant wait personally

NoJabbaNoBogRoll 09-09-2011 11:03 AM

For the record, I'll be rooting for Brock, since he's the one who got me into MMA in the first place. However, I have no problem with Overeem becoming the next heavyweight monster, if he's up to the challenge.

Super V 09-09-2011 12:31 PM

I predict a Kimbo vs. Houston level letdown.

Funky Fly 09-09-2011 01:17 PM

I gotta wonder about the shape both of these guys will be in. Lesnar seems to be headed down the Big Nog "can't stay healthy for the life of me" road and Overeem's cardio is probably end up being what costs him the fight. If Overeem can avoid the big bull rush early on and get a proper striking rhythm going, he could drop Lesnar early and then go to town with the g'n'p. Lesnar needs to draw this out and then hit the takedown when Overeem starts to tire.

I never really like Overeem even back in his Pride days, but that is respect worthy..

Still think Lesnar will smash him though..

I like.

Can see Lesnar pissing off back to wrasslin if he loses though, cant see him sticking around to be a gatekeeper.

Hanso Amore 09-09-2011 08:59 PM

I think these two will be fighting in a crater. I cant think of a fight I have see with two bigger and stronger guys going at it. This is going to be a fucking show.

St. Jimmy 09-09-2011 09:27 PM

Diverticulitis in the first round.

Pintint 09-09-2011 10:38 PM

I see Lesnar winning this. Overeem is not a fast puncher like Cain and even though he has power, Lesnar proved in the Carwin fight that he can take hard shots and come back from them. Overeem is not a good wrestler and will gas after the first round.

Basically this will be Carwin/Lesnar II, except Lesnar will probably be able to take control of Overeem and GNP him to victory. People are underestimating Brock.

alvarado52 09-10-2011 02:35 AM

My biggest concern is the clinch. Nobody has seen how Brock handles a thai clinch, and Overeem can be lethal in it.

Awesome point. A clinch could give us a heavyweight silva/Franklin to marvel at. I gotta choose Overeem. Even on the ground, the Reem's jits could prevail. This is an intriguing matchup

SuperSlim 09-10-2011 08:52 AM

Anything between round 1 through half of the second round it'll be Overeem winning. Beyond that the advantage has to go to Lesnar.

Maybe not a good fight by MMA fan standards but I did expect a nice full blown slugfest there.

Next Big Thing 12-12-2011 07:45 PM

So Overeem got a conditional license. He has 72 hours to take a urine test in the UK, then he has to pass a piss test in the U.S. and submit to two random drug tests six months after the fight.

Just to give you insight into how informed and prepared the conductors of the hearing were, one commissioner thought this was Overeem's first fight a heavyweight.

MoFo 12-12-2011 08:21 PM

WTF does the UK have to do w/ this though

Jura 12-12-2011 08:29 PM

I guess because UK is an acceptable place to take these tests and it's closer to Holland than the US.

Next Big Thing 12-12-2011 08:41 PM

Quote:

"In Holland, you go to the doctor to request a test, and then you get permission to go to a facility, or the doctor can take your specimen for you," Overeem said. "Because that was not a full panel test, which I learned (later) because it was the first time I ever went through this procedure, we had to look for other options. Because this is the first time I've done this; I've never done a full panel steroid test in Holland, and the doctors here also did not know where we could do that. So my doctor made some calls and researched the subject. We found that we could do the testing in Germany in a laboratory, and there also it seems there were some complications.
http://mmajunkie.com/news/26523/alis...drug-tests.mma

He made it seem like the doctors in Holland weren't capable of performing the test NSAC wanted. The whole thing seems like it got blown way out of proportion though. Especially since Overeem submitted a blood test on November 23rd and that came back clean.

Funky Fly 12-13-2011 04:03 PM

The trouble is that he totally looks like he is on roids. When he was a 205er, it was so obvious that he was cutting too much weight. He'd dominate then gas almost immediately quite frequently. Then he got bigger and his performance improved. Still has crappy cardio, but he's definitely performing better. Honestly, he probably is, given how many people who fought at some point in Japan are well known users.

Jura 12-15-2011 09:00 AM

Overeem flatly denies steroid use

I seriously don't get why people insist on using his performance against one of the best kick boxers in the world as an example of why he won't beat Lesnar. Especially since Overeem has a knockout win over that same guy. It just shows a lack of insight about MMA on their part.

Lesnar bout to beat some ass. Brock's gonna show why Overeem's "accomplishments" are a joke and embarass him tonight. I have good money bet on Lesnar and thats probably the easiest bet I've ever won. Everyone thinks just because he lost to Cain, hes no longer one of the best and buy into the overeem hype.

Tonight the hype ends.

Overeem's gonna know what the difference between UFC and Strikeforce in.

I'm taking Brock but I would not be surprised if he got tagged and decided to turtle again.

Funky Fly 12-30-2011 04:08 PM

Even if he didn't turtle, I gotta wonder about his ability to stand with a K-1 grand prix champ. Both are good on top, but neither are great on their backs, so the striking sets them apart. Well, that and Overeem's gas tank.

CSL 12-30-2011 04:25 PM

and Reem has never been rushed by anybody with even half the size, strength and wrestling ability of Brock. I had Brock stopping him in the 2nd round as soon as the fight was announced and I still think it'll go roughly that way. That said, I wouldn't particularly be surprised if Brock got killed inside a minute. Hotttt fight.

Splaya 12-30-2011 04:35 PM

I gotta believe Brock comes out strong. I would just come out and try to end the fight right away. No sense in prolonging this

Funky Fly 12-30-2011 05:03 PM

Bullrush FTW. Overeem's a cocky guy, so he may not have even been bullshitting when he said he didn't watch any tape. If he get's hit with a monster takedown right off the bat he has no chance at all. He certainly doesn't have Cain's wrestling acumen.

Kris P Lettus 12-30-2011 07:28 PM

I believe Brock can take.him down.. it all how he reacts to getting hit during his shot.. I agree that if Brock gets the early takedown it will be a long night for Overeem..
