British Humor

So....do all Brits actually think it's hillarious when a man runs around in women's underwear? A more generalized question is whether or not all Brits think that the so called "British humor" is all that funny. Here in america most of that style of stuff is :| , with the exception of stuff like Red Dwarf and Mr. Bean.

Ogen 10-06-2004 11:36 AM

Mr Bean is hardly highbrow stuff so if you like a middle aged man obsessed with his teddy then you can't criticise men running around in womens underwear ( which I don't recall seeing very ofter ).

Ricky 10-06-2004 11:36 AM

All american sitcoms are hilarious.

TheNamelessOne 10-06-2004 12:35 PM

Do all Americans think it is funny to have some Jew doing stand-up cracking jokes about plane food?

The Mask 10-06-2004 12:43 PM

I have no idea what show you'd even be talking about there.

We have our fair share of wank stuff though.

Check out brass eye and the day today.

The Mask 10-06-2004 12:44 PM

ps. red dwarf is hardly highbrow humour either.

Ricky 10-06-2004 01:04 PM

We should make more cartoons about yellow people, that would make us funnier.

The Mask 10-06-2004 01:07 PM

oh yeah ricky, go for the one show that is actually funny.

I watch practically every British sitcom there is, and I am yet to see...

Except Herr Flick in Allo Allo once, which was funny due to the context.

No, but the show that follows the thirty seconds of stand up is comedy gold.

El Capitano Gatisto 10-06-2004 02:27 PM

What show is he talking about?

British humour, at it's best, devours American humour. Easily.

Boondock Saint 10-06-2004 03:57 PM

British Humor is great. Granted, I haven't seen a lot of the t.v. shows and whatnot. But I love Monty Python, Eddie Izzard, The Office, and Shaun of the Dead was brilliant.

Pretty much the main stuff that has carried over to here, but I'd love to seek out some other stuff. I hear "Spaced" is pretty good?

Funky Fly 10-06-2004 04:04 PM

Watch Spinal Tap. Watch The Holy Grail. Watch Black Adder (Atkins is better in this than Mr. Bean). Watch Brass Eye. Watch Chef!.

All of those are hilarious.

Boondock Saint 10-06-2004 04:08 PM

Spinal Tap is classic of course. Although they aren't actually British. Close enough.

If you liked Shaun of the Dead you'll love Spaced, same people behind it.

Ricky 10-06-2004 05:06 PM

Do they show Only Fools And Horses in america?

Ogen 10-06-2004 05:16 PM

Only Fools And Horses
Black Adder
Father Ted

Watch at least 2 episodes of each of them and tell me British humour is shit

Monty Python is pretty funny. Especially Quest For The Holy Grail.

Jonster 10-06-2004 08:28 PM

I haven't seen any British comedy shows with a man running around in women's underwear.

The Mask 10-06-2004 10:54 PM

out of curiousity, which american humour are we compared to anyway?

Gonzo 10-07-2004 12:08 AM

I believe Rocky Horror Picture Show has the aforementioned humor.

Also, with the cultural barrier, we are to find different things humorous.

Kapoutman 10-07-2004 02:32 AM

Only Fools and Horses
Red Dwarf
The Royle Family
Black Adder
The Office
Little Britain
Peter Kays Pheonix Nights

There are so many fantastic British comedies, where as America have

Frasier :| - One good gag per show
Friends :| - Was funny in the first series, then got very old - very fast
Sienfeld :-\ - WTF was this shit

I think Will and Grace is the only American sitcom I actually enjoy.

Ogen 10-08-2004 12:10 PM

It was all going so well until you said Will and Grace

Definatly. A fairly cheap (Cheap by British DVD price standards) 3 disc set of the 2 Spaced series and an extra disc full of stuff has just been released. Fantastic for me, who bought the 2 disc set 2 months ago.

Its not hilariously laugh out loud funny, but there are tons of hilarious parodies in there. Lots of making fun of the new Star Wars movies. Plus, theres a character in the series who got kicked out of the terretorial army for trying to invade Paris with a tank.

A lot of the people involved with Shaun Of The Dead were involved with Spaced, hence the reason why Simon Pegg and a few others have starred in both. Simon Pegg was on Xfm a few weeks back and said that a new series of Spaced will come out eventually, but they are planning on working on a new movie, which features a British policeman as an action hero.

I like how a simple question turns into an assault on your way of life, yet the original wording still exists plain as day for everyone to see. No statement was ever made that American humor is superior. I just asked for an understanding of what british humor was, and whether or not it was a realistic sample of the british population. I for one do not care for much of the "american" style of placing half a dozen hot people in a coffee house to chat about sex all afternoon, but those of you overseas probably feel that this is true. Likewise, I only wanted a correction on the reality of your situation.

The Mask 10-11-2004 04:35 PM

what show were you even talking about, motherfucker?

Ricky 10-11-2004 04:39 PM

No you didn't ask for an understanding of what British humour was, you asked if we find it funny when a man runs around in womens underwear.

So are you gonna tell us what program you saw this in then or not?

I was refering to an episode of family guy where two british guys said something wasn't funny...not like a man running around in women's underwear. Not being british, my understanding of what this humor is is limited. So I based it on what I know.

Relax. Take a deep breath. Count to ten. It's not like I'm making fun of you.

And yes, I'm well aware of the TVR tuscan speed 6 as well as the speed 12. (actually my name is a variation of this and Tucson Arizona, where I grew up. I was hoping somebody would eventually notice this so I could rep them. So rep to you.)

Again, I must urge you that I am not doing any kind of insulting here. No need for any "motherfucker"s and whatnot.

Using Family Guy as a basis for anything in the real world is kind of a bad idea :o

tucsonspeed6 10-15-2004 07:34 PM

Benny Fucking HILL! That's the guy I kept thinking of! There you go! It's not a guy running around in women's clothing, but it's what I was thinking of when I made this thread.

Mr. Monday Morning 10-15-2004 09:59 PM

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh...now we're getting somewhere.

Dunno, Benny Hill and the Carry On films, that sort of thing...it represents a *part* of British humour, but nowadays it tends to be seen as sort of the older generation's humour...modern-day stuff is the equal of anything anywhere in the world.

Mr. Monday Morning 10-16-2004 11:24 AM

Early in his career he was actually a pretty decent standup. But yeah, all he's really remembered for now is the chasing around with the crazy music and everything :-\

Hired Hitman 10-16-2004 01:04 PM

I think Australian Humour is the best, Basicly because we are laid back with our jokes, unlike the British who seem to speed things up, then the Americans who say things that are not funny at all and usually about something in the news to keep subject to the mass population.

actually forget that, this is what matters.

America = different pitch of voice/current events/sexist-homophobic-racist comments/jokes/motion

British = music/speed/shock humour/awe stuck stupid questions/faces

Australian = Experiences/ voice attention levels/loops (one joke leads into another later on i.e. "and I fell over the stool", "Yeah, then I fell down the stairs, stupid Stool") / motion

by the way, most American comedy acts I find boring. I find some British acts funny, but some are boring as well. I find most Australian Comedy acts to be good, but some are crap.

I guess it all depends on which culture we grow up with.

Molly fan 25 10-17-2004 01:21 AM

I don't like British humor, but then again I am American, there's just something about men in drag that doesn't appeal to me. But then again I don't like Seinfeld, Frasier, Friends, Will & Grace, or 90% of American sitcoms either. I like shows like Mash (the original seasons with Trapper and Blake more than the later ones), Cheers, and Arrested Development.

You are going to enjoy the comedy in your own culture, that is how it is. You are raised in that culture, so naturally you will find that comedy funnier than another culture's. Simply put.

Shawshank 10-18-2004 07:27 PM

have you seen the office? that is a good comedy yet america tryed to copy it and basically killed it. now that is down to the producers trying to make it more americanized and it just didnt work. i saw the american pilot episode of this and it was rubbish, yet the british one has me laughin my bollocks off.

different cultures have different humour, take chris rock, eddie murphy when they did stand up. to me they werent anything special but others may think different, but if i was to compare them to billy connelly and peter kay the british pair should come top in anyday IMO.

if you want to watch a good british comedy from the bennyhill era (70's/80's) please dont judge us on that. in its day it was funny but not now, however if you watch monty pythan (the life of brian & the holy grail), only fools and horses, fawlty towers and you will see british humour at its best from that time (which is still funny now).

others id name for you to watch: little britian, bottom, the fast show, the young ones, pheonix nights, the royal family, black adder, shooting stars, vic reeves big night out.

Boondock Saint 10-18-2004 07:32 PM

Were'd you see the pilot of the American version of The Office? Did it air already? I don't have any high hopes for it in the slightest but I am curious to see what the deal with it is.

I'm American and The Office is one of the most genius creations in comedy I have ever seen.

Shawshank 10-18-2004 07:47 PM

it was on E4 months ago, they only showed it once then followed it with the pilot british episode which was a lot funnier. David Brent is the man just for comments like:

'i have some good news & some bad news for you, the company is moving to reading so most of you will lose your jobs, on a more positive note ive been promoted so every cloud has a silver.... your still thinking about the bad news arnt you?'

&

'once i thought i saw the light at the end of the tunnel, then i realised it was just some bastard with a tourch bringing me more work'

also i love it when garth asks if anyone has seen his stapler and the other guy goes o yeah sorry i borrowed it, then gives him it back but its in the middle of some jelly!

I think the reason I hate British "comedy"(including Monty Python) is because it's so arrogant. It's just so pretentious and "we're so funny". I also hate it because when I say I don't think it's funny, I'm greeted with "You don't get it, that's why you don't like it.". No, it's just not funny. Damn I hate British comedy.

BlackDawn2024 10-28-2004 04:52 AM

Off the top of my head? I pretty much hate all these shows that are supposed to be "funny", which star untalented, flash in the pan dopes like Friends, Fraiser and Arrested Development(not funny). I hate probably 95% of all sitcoms. If I can name one off the top of my head, it would be the one that pretty much everyone else on here has said.

Seinfeld is, and will always be, the funniest sitcom ever. I even put it so high as on the best SHOWS ever. I can't really name more than Seinfeld, but what I was trying to do with my post was point out how arrogant some British comedy is.

I'm not a big sitcom guy myself. Maybe it's the cheesey jokes, maybe it's the "witty repartee" or maybe it's the canned laughter. Yeah, anyway, are there any stand up acts you like or any sketch comedy shows or movies or anything like that? Just trying to see what you find entertaining (besides Seinfeld because he is a comedy god).

Those are all great stand up acts. People will call your sense of humor "juvenile", but the entirely miss the point of what those 3 great stand up acts and what Trey Parker and Matt Stone are usually saying.
