Top 5 sporting moments EVER
We should have a competition to see what are the 5 greatest sporting moments ever. Here's how I reckon we should do it:
1. Everybody lists their greatest moments ever (it doesn't have to be that you've witnessed, it can have happened in 1483 for all I care, but there must be proof that it happened) and then from those we get a list of events to vote for. Note: These events must be famous on a WORLD scale, so for instance the Boston Red Sox winning the World Series doesn't count because nobody outside the USA gives a fuck about it. 2. For an event to qualify, it must have approval from somebody from America, Canada, England/Wales/Ireland AND Australia/New Zealand. (We should probably have 1 credible poster - who knows and understand sports from all around the world - from each region as "Judges", but I won't represent Australia because I don't give a fuck about poofter sports like soccer & gridiron, so therefore my opinion will be biased) 3. From the remaining list, we have a vote for the best sporting events/moments ever and the top 5 will be the 5 best ever (unless I don't agree with the results in which I will over-rule :D ). My nominations are: - Mohammad Ali's First Round Knockout vs Sonny Liston. (If this isn't on the final vote then somebody will die) - Ali Lighting the flame at Atlanta - Maradonna's "Hand of God" in 1986 (If the poms are the only one who rule against this then I'm putting it through due to bias) - Kieran Perkins being the first person ever to break 15mins in the 1500 freestyle, 1992 (or was it 1996?) - Jonny Wilkinson vs the rest of the world 2003 Rugby World Cup. (As much as I hate the cunt and the way they played during the tournament, he singlehandedly won the Cup for them and the final against Australia was one of the most exciting sporting matches ever) - Bradman's career, by far the greatest cricketer ever - Jordan's 3-peat with the Bulls Obviously probably not all of these will go through, but it's something to get you all started on. |
- Australia defeating Uruguay on penalties to qualify for their first World Cup in 32 years
- Lance Armstrong's 83 quadrillion Tour de Frances - Rick McCosker breaking his jaw in the first inning, to come back in the second inning of the Centenary Ashes Test and making a winning 9th wicket partnership - Australia v South Africa - 1999 cricket world cup semi-final. 'Nuff said |
I will name a few later.
|
Defeating - I swore I'd never use that word.
But I did. |
One of these events should represent baseball
- Bill Mazeroski walk-off home run, 1960 World Series, Game 7 - Babe Ruth calls his shot, 1932 World Series, Game 3 - Bobby Thomson walk-off home run, 1951 NLCS, Game 3 - Kirk Gibson walk-off home run, 1988 World Series, Game 1 - Willie Mays over-the-shoulder catch, 1954 World Series, Game 1 |
- Glenn McGrath's bowling spell at the recent Ashes series in the first Test match, where he took 5 wickets leaving England at 21 for 5.
- The Edgbaston Test match in the recent Ashes Series. - Aberdeen beat Real Madrid to win the Cup Winners Cup in 1983. - Man United defeat Bayern Munich to win the Champions League. - Rumble in the Jungle. |
-Jack Morris in the 1991 World Series
-Roger Bannister breaking four-minute mile and later beating John Landy -Jordan's game winning shot against the Jazz in 98 |
Horry's 3 against the Kings, 2000 Western Conference Finals. Game 4 I think.
Mike Jones' game saving tackle against the Titans, Rams-Titans Superbowl. |
Fuck Johnny Wilkinson. He's a shite player.
|
Charlie Conway's Triple Deek game winning penalty shot in the 92 Pee Wee hockey championships aganst the Hawks.
|
Elway's helicopter in the Superbowl
|
The 1972 Russia/Canada Summit Series. 8 games where the bosses actually let their employees play hookey from work, as they did too. Simply to watch the best series of hockey ever played probably.
Canada realized then and there that they werent the ONLY hockey power around. It was about way more then just a game of Hockey. It was a way of life, culture.... So Hendersons goal was the stuff of legend. |

Good choices so far. I'll need to put more thought into mine (and watch Game 1 of the eastern finals) before I post. |

My top 5 ( a tiny bit biased but not by much )
5) Reggie Miller scoring 25 points in the 4th qrt at Madison Sqaure Garden agains the Knicks , helping the Pacers win the game and giving the infamous choke sign to Spike Lee. One of the best rivalries ever. Knicks/Pacers 4) Peyton Manning breaking the single season TD record throwing his 49th to Brandon Stokely against the Chargers. 3) David Ortiz in the 2004 ALCS. Nuff said 2) Jordans buzzer beater over Ehloe. Thats where the Jordan phenomenon started and i'd argue thats the most rerunned buzzer beater in NBA history. 1) Kirk Gibsons HR off Dennis Eck in the 1st game of the World Series. I watched Beyond the Glory where they focused on that. Simply amazing. Honerable mentions ( for me atleast ) : Miller pushing off Jordan and nailing the game winning 3 pointer in his face. It was a statement . I'm not sure any guard ever rised to the occasion against Jordan like Reggie did in that game. He was on a bum ankle. Some would argue that he pushed off, but i'd argue that theres 5 seconds to go let them play. And play they did. The Pacers went on to lose that series. But during the Bulls domination of basketball. The Pacers were the only team to seriously give them a run. And that shot should be played when Reggie goes to the HoF. He truely stuck it to the man that night. |
Yeah, it's not like Jordan didn't get the exact same non-call when he pushed off against the Jazz. Both of those = hot.
|
exactly...I'll be called biased, but that Miller shot was it for me.

Easy would be if we didn't need to travel nearly the whole world round in 4 days, the only time the whole squad has had together for 4 years, for the only 2 meaningful games we've had in that time against a far superior team of cheats, divers and savages intent on using every dirty trick and technicality to fuck us up. Oh, and that's all we got, too. No chance of getting through by winning our group; playoff or nothing. Gimme Cyprus or the Faroe Islands anyday. Easy indeed . |

-Jordan over Ehloe -Titans lose Superbowl on last play :( -Kirk Gibson walk off HR 88 Series Game 1 -And my homer pick is of course Aaron Boone putting the Yanks in the world series Game 7 2003 ALCS. I went nuts |
95,000 people to an international football friendly where the result was meaningless. Being able to see the country of my heritage play the country that I was born in and have grown up in.
Seeing the ground in a sea of both blue and white, and green and gold. The best of both worlds...LOVE IT. |

Seeing as we're on a biased note here...
I'll say Wales defeating Italy 2-1 in 2002 in a Euro 2004 qualifier. Being in the Millenium Stadium that night amongst 72,000 fans was unbelievable, one of Wales' greatest ever upsets. The atmosphere was incredible. |
France winning World Cup 98 :)

Due to 98% of people only putting moments from their own country, I'm gonna declare David Boon's 34 cans of beer from Sydney to Perth as the Greatest sporting moment ever.
Thread over. |
My top 5 sporting moments of all time:
St.Kilda winning the 1996 premiership in the then VFL (Victorian Football League) with a 1 point over Collingwood, the most successful team of all time (just about). St.Kilda, the most unsuccessful team of all time...who hadn't won a premiership in their first 69 years of being in the competition. The entire 2005 Ashes series. Although Australia played shite and England played well above themselves, every match (except the first match) was a cliff hanger. The cricket career of Don Bradman. No one has even come close to Bradman's feats in cricket. Australia VS India, 2nd test (I believe) in...hmm, 1995...someone can clarify. VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly take the home team from following on to winning the test match, India go on to win the series, BASTARDS!!! Brazil dominating world football from 1994 (World cup winners), 1998 (World cup runners-up), 2002 (World Cup winners) and heavy favourites for the 2006 world cup |
I think you mean '66, mate. (ps St Kilda are a bunch of shitcunt poofters & Neitz is a fucking champion)
The Australia/India game was about 2001 I think. I think they were about 4-34 after being asked to follow on, 1-0 down in a 3 test series & somehow managed to win it. But I dont reckon it beats Steve Waugh's 200 against the Windies in 1995; 1-1 in going into the last game of a test series with no. 1 spot in the World on the line against one of the best bowling attacks ever, it was the beginning of one of the most ruthless sporting teams ever. Ps St Kilda are faggots & Riewoldt takes it up the arse. |
The Canucks run at the cup in '94. - Fuck me, I was going hyped on that.
Guy Lafleur and the Canadiens knocking off the 'Big Bad' Bruins in 78(?) Kirk Gibson's HR and then Orel's pitching performance the following game. Leon Spinks VS Ali - Biggest hyped fight I as a youngster witnessed, not to mention the fight. Jays/Tigers battle it out for the American League East Championship in 87. These two teams were at each other's throats for about 5 years prior. Man, the Blew Jays were dispatched in the end by the Tigers. But I gotta tell you, it was some of the best ball I ever witnessed. |

-Michael Johnson's 200 & 400 meter blowout in the Olympics '96. The guy just looked like he was floating on air when he ran.
-There are too many moments with Jordan. I'd have to say the buzzer beater in Cleveland, The 'right-to-left' layup against the Lakers in '91 (i actually watched it live...looked like the matrix), Jordan's game winning shot over Russell in '98, his famous 'foul line' dunk. -Iverson's game 1 performance of the '01 NBA finals. When he crossed up Lue and hit the shot, then STEPPED over him....delicious. -Boston Red Sox winning the World Series. I am not a big baseball fan, but i know Boston fans still have their hard-on's from that moment. -Anything with Ali in it. Whether it was his media 'promos', fights, quotes, etc. The man was the first "Rock" of sports. |

Shit happened in front of me too. |
Donovan Bailey earning the title of world's fastest man from Michael Johnson during their 150m race. Johnson knew he was losing so he fakes an injury...

Gatting, Mike., b. Warne, S.K., Old Trafford 3 June 1993 One of the best balls in cricket history. Warney's head actually refused to fit inside a room from that ball onwards. |
