best wrestler, worst gimmick

Who has been the best overall wrestler(Promo ability, ring skills,"IT" factor etc.)that has been stuck with the worst possible gimmick you could think of.Dusty Rhodes' polka dots come to mind,as well as "The Stalker"Barry Windham or more recently The Hulk Hogan/Abyss HOF ring travesty.

VSG 07-07-2010 06:32 PM

Fit Finaly with the Jolly Irish gimmick.

Razzamajazz 07-07-2010 06:36 PM

nrt4 07-07-2010 07:08 PM

Owen Hart as The Blue Blazer.

Steveviscious89 07-07-2010 07:08 PM

Forget about 'stalker' DDP....what about 'Positively' Page?.....that was just disgusting.

Also...the recent AJ Styles is a good example...he should NEVER be a heel.

bigslimjj 07-07-2010 07:24 PM

a.j. has always been better as a face. The wannabe flair stuff is just weak sauce.Like Abyss wanting to be hogan.Let him be old Kane like he was before.I liked OLD Kane.

XL 07-07-2010 07:32 PM

Nick Dinsmore.

Whilst "Mini Flair" AJ was "retarded", this guy literally had a retarded gimmick.

BizarroKing 07-07-2010 07:44 PM

Legion Of Doom with ROCCO!

You know, on paper The Undertaker could be a contender. I mean, apart from being people till they die so they need to use his business to get him some cash, there's no real sense I can see. But it's not stupid and it's worked and Calaway is more than a good wrassler.

I think Owen as the Blue Blazer is a good call. Obviously it has to be Ziggler as a cheerleader though.

The various times bookers decided to incorporate a wrestler's real life drinking problems into the storylines. Jake Roberts, Road Warrior Hawk, Scott Hall all spring to mind.

Christian: when his grandmother rejected him. (Grandmother was actually Vince McMahon)

Favre4Ever 07-08-2010 03:03 AM

Reverend Devon Dudley.

.....................nevermind.

Destor 07-08-2010 03:39 AM

The Undertaker is clearly the right answer. He made millions off his shitty gimmick...says a lot about how good of a wrestler he is no dont it? :p

Jeritron 07-08-2010 03:44 AM

Undertaker's success in spite of that gimmick is the ultimate testimony to his ability. And in all fairness to the gimmick, it evolved enough to be good. Mostly it was thanks to the credibility Undertaker lent it, and kept intact no matter how much the times changed.

Seriously, I would have loved to know what he was thinking when he was told by Vince that he'd be debuting as an old western style undertaker, complete with all the supernatural fixings and a manager named Paul Bearer.
He must have thought he had 6 months tops.

Jeritron 07-08-2010 03:45 AM

Chris Jericho was originally offered The Goon character

Destor 07-08-2010 03:48 AM

Bill Irwin as The Goon

Terry Gordy as The Executioner

My Final Heaven 07-08-2010 10:22 AM

Come on, how can nobady have mentioned Irwin R. Schyster yet? "Evil Tax Man" is the most nonsensical gimmick you could think of, but the sheer power of Mike Rotunda's awesomeness bled through & legitimized him. Of most of the Dumb Gimmick guys (save The Undertaker), IRS was the only one to hold a title - 3 time Tag Champ

tna 07-08-2010 12:31 PM

Scotty 2 Hotty as Scott 2 Hot Taylor!!!

Rammsteinmad 07-08-2010 12:43 PM

3 Count.

XCaliber 07-08-2010 01:30 PM

For it's time the evil taxman gimmick was genius. Who likes the taxman - evil or not?

Could have been a wrestling refuse collector ffs.

Pretty fucking happy!

Seriously, he had left WCW, had a trial with WWF but was told they had nothing for him. Then Vince called with the Taker gimmick.

Actually think about it, if Matt "Doink" Borne did not had the problems with drugs (and left the WWE) could he have evolved the "wrestling clown" like Mark did?

Also side note, Issac Yankeem and "The great and powerful" Oz.

BizarroKing 07-08-2010 09:14 PM

I got another one...

Naked Mideon....*shudders*

Xero 07-08-2010 09:26 PM

Taka Michinoku comes to mind. His WWF gimmick was fun, but he deserved so much more.

DLVH84 07-08-2010 10:29 PM

Who

Howl 07-08-2010 10:55 PM

I agree with all The Undertaker votes. Even the American Badass gimmick was an awful career move and he still made it through.

Spike Dudley was always entertaining, but his character pretty much was a kid with Downs.
