windows 7 64 bit. ugh
 

so yeah, new laptop new windows etc. turns out absolutely nothing i used to use for music production will work on this now without me spending hundreds and hundreds of pounds upgrading, which really isn't going to happen.

so basically just wondering what my options are. like i heard about being able to load xp onto a seperate partition or something? how does that work? will there be any conflicts with the whole 64 bit thing?

You can reinstall with Windows 7 32bit and use your 64bit product key.

i think even then there would still be problems. the music programs at the version i have them will only really work on xp i think.

Have you tried running in Compatibility Mode?

Which version of Windows 7 did it come with? It may support the XP emulator.

Right click on the programs and select properties. Click on the Compatibility tab, check the box that says Run this program in compatibility mode for: then make sure it says Windows XP (Service Pack 3).

i haven't even been able to install the programs to the point where i'd be able to use compatibility mode (though i didn't know about that so cheers)

as for version, it's windows 7 home premium, apparently.

Download pirated/updated versions of the programs. :o

nah i've tried, they are ridiculously protected. one of them already was pirated but doesn't work anymore :'( more pissed about the one i paid £250 for only for it to be obsolete a couple of years down the line. the hardware i got with it doesn't even work now either. only thing i bought my new laptop for as well really, so annoying.

If it's an .exe file that you need to run to install a program that methods works as well. When I first used Win 7 I had a few things that didn't even install but I did the compatibility thing and it let me install it.

If Juras thing doesn't work, google VMWARE for tutorial on installing Windows XP in a virtual machine.

I was going to suggest XP mode, but that's Windows 7 Professional and higher :'(

You can actually get XP mode to work on Home Premium, but I don't think Jon would be up for doing all the steps required :o

Which programs aren't working btw?

pro tools le 7 and cubase sx3

Reading a bunch of stuff about how Pro Tools apparently just doesn't work on Windows 7 and also something about how you need a compatible sound card or "the Digidesign hardware" but dunno what that even means.

On my system @ install, I had the option for Win 7 Ultimate x64 and x86.

yeah i have the hardware, it's basically just a microphone/guitar/midi analog to digital converter type thing. i will try cubase and let you know <3
