Weird censoring
 

Was just watching wwf vintage and they showed a match on wwf superstars between mr perfect and superfly. Found it a bit weird that they were censoring a banner saying "superstars of wrestling". Is this to do with them banging on about "sports entertainment" instead of wrestling?

Maybe it had a WWF logo on it.

Thought this was gonna be about how they used to censor chair shots and stuff with a giant red "CENSORED" box.

Though I might have dreamed that.

sometimes they censor the word ass, and other times they don't. it was during the same promo too

They censor 'ass' and 'bitch' here in UK, even though its on at like 2am and no kids will be watching.

I remember Sky not showing Trish Stratus crawling round the ring like a dog for Vince as well, they said it was degrading and cut out the whole segment.

Nope, was the old logo from the 80's and the early 90's. Only the scratch logo is censored.

I was watch The Greatest Stars of the 90's dvd and the Censored out the belt Ric Flair brought with from WCW in the match he had with hogan.

They always did this because they were sued by WCW. Only a few appearances with the belt uncensored exist. Also, it might have been the tag belt at that point so that would explain keeping the blur.

As for the topic, did they have "W W F" instead of the block letters on the banner? That would explain it.

Nope, it was the old blocky logo. It was on the same banner yet they only censored the lower part saying superstars of wrestling. :wtf:

Yup, was on a yellow banner with that logo at the top and "superstars of wrestling" underneath. The blur effect was only targeting the text saying superstars of wrestling and was nowhere near the logo.

Doesn't make much sense unless its to do with the whole "this is sports entertainment" routine.

They are inconsistent in what they censor. They might have just messed it up by accident.

The league is still called World Wrestling Entertainment. So, I am not sure about them wanting to censor wrestling.

When do you ever hear them say the whole name? Ever?

I remember that happened when Outlaw Ron Bass attacked Brutus Beefcake with his spurs. I think that was the only time I ever saw it though.

It was only on UK (and maybe other overseas) airings.

How the fuck is a head butt censorable?

I caught the end of "Afterburn" (recap show in the UK) before NoC and they censored something ny cutting to a crowd shot. This was at 12.30 in the morning!

Nah, I'm not sure that's what he's thinking of. Back in the day when there was something particularly graphic on the show (like Ron Bass carving Beefcake's head with his spur) they had this big red censored box come onscreen and obscure the image.

I've never really thought about this but I don't ever remember hearing "World Wrestling Entertainment" on TV.

Perhaps that was it. I'm going to say that it was, and file yet another possible dream as reality.

I remember watching WCW Worldwide in the UK and they used Batman like censoring when someone hit his opponent with a weapon.

they censored the Superstars of Wrestling banner because an Australian wrestling promoter sued them over the use of it as he had a promotion trade marked as such
