Debate: Wrestlemania as the Greatest thing ever created in Pro Wrestling?

Lets say hypothetically pro wrestling disappears completely as a sport or form of entertainment, will Wrestlemania be considered the greatest idea or achievement in the history of pro wrestling or will some other idea/moment be thought of as bigger?

Its the only event in wrestling that attracts huge hype and crowds even from people who are not wrestling fans similar to the Superbowl for football and the World Cup for soccer.

Hulkamania brother.

Damn Skippy.

Now where's DLVH for his Wrestlekingdom spaz.

Lock Jaw 02-03-2011 12:44 AM

The correct answer is Disco Inferno.

Nah, but from a business and a production standpoint, Wrestlemania is the be all and end all of anything wrestling.

Greatest spectacle, sure...but to me, its the Royal Rumble

Furious Beardsley 02-03-2011 02:16 AM

You're all wrong. The obvious answer is Steve Blackman.

Robodiv 02-03-2011 10:51 AM

The Beverly Brothers.

I would have to say Monday Nitro, since every night was "The greatest night, in the history of our sport!"

Volare 02-03-2011 01:24 PM

You ever notice that when they said that, usually a botch occurred after.

Haze 02-03-2011 01:27 PM

I went back and watched some old WCW shows a little while back, and wondered to myself "how did I buy into some of the crap that they were trying to sell?"

Jordan 02-03-2011 04:37 PM

Yeah without a doubt Wrestlemania was the biggest creation in pro wrestling.

HeartBreakMan2k 02-03-2011 06:47 PM

WrestleMania will be the greatest event, the greatest concept however will be doing weekly live television, from a storyline progression tool to the profitability of commercials, it really is the driving force of everything that's been great in wrestling.

Nightwing 02-03-2011 06:51 PM

A combination of Vince creating Hulk Hogan and Wrestlemania. Wrestlemania is the holy grail of wrestling, Hogan being the Babe Ruth. Winning formula.

Chavo Classic 02-03-2011 07:26 PM

The Monday Night Wars put wrestling where it is today. Wrestling today has a lot to be thankful for towards Bischoff and Turner for galvanising a dying industry.

DLVH84 02-03-2011 09:02 PM

To me, as far as American wrestling go, it has to be Starrcade, hands down.

agreed

For alot of yrs Starrcade was vastly superior to Wrestlemania

Alot bigger marquee matches instead of mostly filler matches and then the final 2 or 3 big matches they built it on

Sixx 02-03-2011 09:45 PM

No. Waxed, sweaty men in spandex is the greatest thing in wrestling.

Loose Cannon 02-03-2011 09:45 PM

yea, but Wrestlemania was always seen as a bigger event then Starrcade. Not just with wreslting fans, but taking everyone into account.

Starrcade had the pure wrestling and great matches, Wrestlemania had the glitz and glamor, which was more important to growth

Lock Jaw 02-03-2011 10:40 PM

Seriously, I'd put Wrestlemania right behind the Superbowl in annual athletic events in terms of "spectacle".

Emperor Smeat 02-03-2011 10:45 PM

The reasons I ended up going with Wrestlemania instead of Starrcade were:

1) The mainstream appeal of Wrestlemania with only Hulkamaia comparable in appeal.
2) Vince making sure Wrestlemania was seen as the mega-event and planned out much better and longer than other shows or ideas.
3) Late WCW years had some poorly planned and bad Starrcade events when WCW should have done more effort (ex. Hogan vs Sting as a huge downer).

DrA 02-04-2011 12:17 AM

It's not even that original of an idea. "Let's have this big ass wrestling event once a year." It works and it's been very successful, yeah, but it's not like it's an astounding act of creative genius.

DrA 02-04-2011 12:22 AM

It's kind of like asking if the NBA Finals is the greatest thing to ever be created in professional basketball. All it is is an intricate aspect of the entire sport. There isn't anything necessarily unique about it in itself.

Lock Jaw 02-04-2011 02:12 AM

Wrestlemania may not always be an "astounding act of creative genius" but it is always an astounding act of production and marketing.

Fox 02-04-2011 08:34 PM

I'd have to say that while WrestleMania was the greatest thing ever in pro wrestling that the Monday Night Wars supercedes it. Nothing got the public more interested in wrestling than what was happening during the wars: two live, creative, interesting and exciting wrestling programs going head to head with two of the greatest storylines of all time: the nWo and Vince VS Austin.

To simplify, live Monday Night Wrestling is the greatest thing ever created in pro wrestling. It's a landmark that will continue until wrestling is dead (which will probably never happen).
