The WWE officially recognise John Cena as being the current WWE Champion.

Punk became champion after beating Cena, but his contract ran out after it, which ended his reign as WWE Champion as he was no longer under contract by the WWE.

The title thus became vacant as no contracted WWE Superstar held the championship. A tournament was held to crown a new champion, which Rey Mysterio won, making him the new WWE Champion.

Later that night, John Cena beat Rey Mysterio in a match for the WWE Championship, which made him the new WWE Champion.

John Cena is currently the WWE Champion.

I can't see how Punk isn't considered the legit champ, since Cena's belt is an exact replica of Punk's title. Plus, Punk won it from the reconized champ and not in some randomly thrown together tournament. If they are trying to follow the tradition of the WWE Title, then the original title would be more prestigious than a replica...

A replica belt can be used in place of the original. They could take a hubcap with a leather belt tied to it, hand it to Cena and say "You're WWE Champ till CM Punk brings the other back." It's the written title of 'Champion' that carries prestige, the belt's appearance can change every week.

If ANY WWF/E title can claim any sort of 'Prestige', it's this one:

I have to disagree with you there. Just calling the belt a "Championship" doesn't make it prestigious. What makes the belt meaningful is the matches used to establish it. Any jabroni could go to a custom belt maker and have a belt made(see Zack Ryder), but it doesn't make them a true champion. I wasn't a fan of the appearance of the WWE Title, but at least it wasn't a knockoff belt just won in some tournament. CM Punk technically would be considered the champion if we are judging by the tradition of the WWE Title. Making a replica and trying to claim it has the same prestige as the original belt is laughable to me...

I never said calling any belt a 'Championship' made it prestigious. There's no prestige in any 'belt'. Any belt is merely symbolic. I was referring to the history behind it, hence the 'hubcap/leather belt' joke.

The history behind it what makes the belt. All the great former champions symbolize why the championship is prestigious. I think it's a joke that ppl truly think WWE making another belt means Cena is deserving of that title. CM Punk won it, then didn't resign, so naturally it isn't credible? Not the case IMO...
