So I read "Of mice and men" last night.

What a truly marvelous work of literature. I expect most here have read it as part of required reading in school.

It was the most powerful 107 pages I have read in a long time. Immediately checked out The Pearl and The Red Pony and got The grapes of wrath on hold for when it returns to this library branch.

Who else enjoyed this novella?

Nicky Fives 04-28-2012 02:22 PM

I read it in High School.... the movie with Gary Sinise is quite good as well.....we read Grapes Of Wrath the same year as well.....

El Fangel 04-28-2012 02:26 PM

How long is the movie?

Supreme Olajuwon 04-28-2012 03:27 PM

You are so Lennie.

About the length of a movie.

It was the one school book I really enjoyed. I was asked a question on it as part of my English GCSE. "Describe the barn that the men stayed in" :|

El Fangel 04-28-2012 04:10 PM

The men stayed in a bunkhouse...Crooks stayed in the barn.

The Rogerer 04-28-2012 04:17 PM

Somehow I still got an A

El Fangel 04-28-2012 04:41 PM

Lol.

Razzamajazz 04-28-2012 04:43 PM

was literally just thinking about this book half an hour ago while i was pooping

El Fangel 04-28-2012 04:53 PM

Should read it again.

You only posted this thread to say that you read a book in one night

El Fangel 04-28-2012 06:51 PM

Yeah, I did. 107 pages was a huge challenge

Swiss Ultimate 04-28-2012 06:52 PM

I read the Harry Potter Series in half an hour. BOOOM!

El Fangel 04-28-2012 06:58 PM

I wanna call bullshit on that but I dunno. Dtts is pretty quick.

In bed at least :naughty:

Swiss Ultimate 04-28-2012 07:16 PM

I just don't like wasting people's time. I understand that they just want me to cum so that I'll be happy.

El Fangel 04-28-2012 08:09 PM

Yes, but you could at least use a tissue. Sheets are difficult to wash.

Verbose Minch 04-28-2012 08:20 PM

When I was 10 or 11 I was looking through my parents book collection because at the time I was a huuuggggeee bookworm. I picked out 'Of Mice and Men' because I thought the name sounded cool. I read it all that day and loved every minute of it.

I'm definitely going to go read it tonight because of this thread, thanks Fangel.

El Fangel 04-28-2012 08:22 PM

I can't wait until The Grapes of Wrath gets here. Love Steinbecks writing style.

Yeah, plus he's motivated to finish the Harry Potter series so he can better lure kids into his basement.

Kindle>you.

El Fangel 04-29-2012 07:02 AM

I will break one over your face.

thedamndest 04-29-2012 05:08 PM

East of Eden is my favorite Steinbeck but you can't really go wrong.

loopydate 04-30-2012 12:59 AM

I think The Pearl might be my favorite Steinbeck, but Grapes and OMAM are both fantastic as well.

Exactly this. You sure we didn't go to the same school???

We read the book then watched the movie. Was kind of a re-occuring theme in my high school to watch a version of the movie after reading said book (provided there was one). Out of all the stuff we read/watched in those 4 years, this was one of my favs. (My favorite hands down has to be when we got to see the version of Othello with Fishburne/Branaugh.)

However, even in movie form, I dispise A Tale of Two Cities. That story can burn in hell.

El Fangel 05-17-2012 05:18 AM

Read "The Red Pony" tonight. Probably the most depressing book I have read in a long time.

Triple A 05-18-2012 03:32 AM

Sweet book, I think it was one of the maybe 3 or 4 books that I was forced to read in school that I really liked

El Fangel 05-18-2012 03:37 AM

I loved it to be honest. Don't get me wrong but its just so depressing. Hope The Pearl is a bit more light hearted but I have a feeling it won't be.

El Fangel 05-19-2012 03:30 AM

No, incredibly far from it. Very much enjoyed the book however.

SlickyTrickyDamon 05-19-2012 05:50 AM

I think the only books I enjoyed that I was forced to read were Animal Farm and Hound of the Baskervilles.

El Fangel 05-19-2012 06:21 AM

We read "The Shipping News" instead of Hound of The Baskervilles. Turns out, I was the only person in my class who finished it. When the time came, the teacher asked me to deliver my report to the class. It started with;

"As many of you know, I am an avid reader. Earlier this year we read Animal Farm and judging from your reports many of you enjoyed it. However seeing as I am the only person among you who has finished this terrible mess of literature I can say I wish I could place myself among you in having never read it. I feel the time I spent reading it was a wasted part of my life and I truly hope it is taken out of the curriculum. Thank you all for your time"

The teacher just looked at me and glared. He issued a class challenge to make up for the horrible class marks for the book where we were tasked to submit reports on a minimum total of 1000 pages of literature to gain 10 points to put on any of our previous marks during the year with the exception of exams.

I read somewhere in the vicinity of 25,000 pages before the challenge ended. Still only got 10 points though. Two friends of mine had 16,500 and 11,000 each. Pretty sad when people didn't take the initiate to get what was an easy mark for English class.

I digress, The Cay was an excellent book as well.
