So I read "Of mice and men" last night.
What a truly marvelous work of literature. I expect most here have read it as part of required reading in school.
It was the most powerful 107 pages I have read in a long time. Immediately checked out The Pearl and The Red Pony and got The grapes of wrath on hold for when it returns to this library branch. Who else enjoyed this novella? Quote:

Yes, but you could at least use a tissue. Sheets are difficult to wash.

When I was 10 or 11 I was looking through my parents book collection because at the time I was a huuuggggeee bookworm. I picked out 'Of Mice and Men' because I thought the name sounded cool. I read it all that day and loved every minute of it.
I'm definitely going to go read it tonight because of this thread, thanks Fangel. |

I think The Pearl might be my favorite Steinbeck, but Grapes and OMAM are both fantastic as well.

We read the book then watched the movie. Was kind of a re-occuring theme in my high school to watch a version of the movie after reading said book (provided there was one). Out of all the stuff we read/watched in those 4 years, this was one of my favs. (My favorite hands down has to be when we got to see the version of Othello with Fishburne/Branaugh.) However, even in movie form, I dispise A Tale of Two Cities. That story can burn in hell. |

Read "The Red Pony" tonight. Probably the most depressing book I have read in a long time.

I loved it to be honest. Don't get me wrong but its just so depressing. Hope The Pearl is a bit more light hearted but I have a feeling it won't be.

I think the only books I enjoyed that I was forced to read were Animal Farm and Hound of the Baskervilles.

We read "The Shipping News" instead of Hound of The Baskervilles. Turns out, I was the only person in my class who finished it. When the time came, the teacher asked me to deliver my report to the class. It started with;
"As many of you know, I am an avid reader. Earlier this year we read Animal Farm and judging from your reports many of you enjoyed it. However seeing as I am the only person among you who has finished this terrible mess of literature I can say I wish I could place myself among you in having never read it. I feel the time I spent reading it was a wasted part of my life and I truly hope it is taken out of the curriculum. Thank you all for your time" The teacher just looked at me and glared. He issued a class challenge to make up for the horrible class marks for the book where we were tasked to submit reports on a minimum total of 1000 pages of literature to gain 10 points to put on any of our previous marks during the year with the exception of exams. I read somewhere in the vicinity of 25,000 pages before the challenge ended. Still only got 10 points though. Two friends of mine had 16,500 and 11,000 each. Pretty sad when people didn't take the initiate to get what was an easy mark for English class. I digress, The Cay was an excellent book as well. |
