I'm kinda surprised this doesn't have its own thread yet.

Anyway, if you haven't heard about Pacific Rim yet, it's the next upcoming flick by Guillermo Del Toro, and it's kind of a new take on the classic Japanese giant-monster movies.

Here's the official synopsis:

But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar nominee Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) is directing Pacific Rim from a script by Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (Thor), Rinko Kikuchi (The Brothers Bloom), Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses, TV's "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"), and Ron Perlman (Hellboy). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

Del Toro’s behind-the-scenes team includes Academy Award-winning director of photography Guillermo Navarro, production designer Andrew Neskoromny, editor Peter Amundson, and costume designer Kate Hawley.

Slated for release in Summer 2013, Pacific Rim is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Is anyone else here incredibly excited about this movie?

I've been a huge fan of the corny old monster movies for as long as I can remember. Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, I love that stuff. And now you've got Del Toro, arguably the best 'monster man' in movies since Ray Harryhausen, doing a full-on apocalyptic giant-monster epic. By all rights, this oughta be goddamn incredible. Between this and the upcoming reboot of Godzilla, I'm a very happy nerd right now.

I do like Del Toro's stuff, could be quite good.

That's a good cast. Except for Charlie Day, he's gotta be there for comic relief only and nothing else.

Dammit, when's Sons of Anarchy coming back?

I am so down for this.

People seemed completely blown away by the footage shown at comic-con. I'm definitely down.

If this is done in Cloverfield style I will be sorely disappointed.

It's just a teaser.

And they're not going to spend $200 million on a found footage film.

All fair points, but the teaser worried me a bit. That's all.

I hold out hope that there will be rubber suited monsters. I should know better, as everything is CG anymore. Just saying.

That movie poster at first looked like a giant Robo John Chief of Halo! :P

Yeah, I was not really hooked until I heard Ellen McLain's voice. I should have been, because it's Guillermo Del Toro and monsters, but it wasn't until I heard GlaDOS that I was hooked.

This film just looks ridiculous. I have yet to decide whether that is a good or bad thing.

Still looks ridiculous, but quite possibly in an awesome way.

It's like someone opened up a window into my perfect monster movie.

Going to bring my kids to see this I think.

points for getting a rim job while watching this movie.

this is easily the best event movie i've seen in years. it seems like del toro is very deliberately trying to buck some trends so rampant in these types of films lately. avoids fast cuts and close-ups; the mechas are all distinct and have clear strengths and weaknesses; the exposition and general set-up is swift (they don't take 40 minutes to get to the point); the sexual tension isn't overdone or drawn out, and really the only person majorly sexualised is the main dude; it doesn't feel like it goes on forever (it's 2hrs and 10min but it was still like... a necessary 2hrs and 10min, i guess)... and there's a levity to it that is so sorely lacking from other films of similar ilk. seriously, it's a wonderful, fun, HUGE movie. the performances are good enough for what it is, the aesthetics are gorgeous and idk, i feel like this will be a film people go back to year after year as a favourite. it won't win any oscars (maybe aside from visual achievement ones), but holy shit, it was fantastic. i was really, really pleasantly surprised. felt like a kid again. all of you, go see this movie.

Word of mouth is spreading on this one. Good stuff.
