I'm trying to get into reading comics

So I downloaded the ComiX app on my iPhone and am trying to get back into reading comics. It seems like though that there are like 50 comics for every super hero now. What are some good comics that I should get into?

What are some of the best Batman, Spiderman, etc. comics that I should start reading?

Give me some recommendations. Please and thank you.

Nowhere Man 07-17-2012 05:11 PM

Do you mean their ongoing series, or specific story arcs and graphic novels to read?

Triple Naitch 07-17-2012 05:21 PM

Huh?

I'm very new at this. Just give me some good comics to read. Story arcs, series, etc.

The Destroyer 07-17-2012 05:21 PM

Good app, that.

Lot of stuff to choose from though. Have to give this a bit of thought.

Triple Naitch 07-17-2012 05:23 PM

They have a lot of free comics for me to read, which is PrettyCool.

The Destroyer 07-17-2012 05:25 PM

Yeah but it's mostly one off issues of stuff. They do have pretty frequent sales and stuff though. You only just missed a load of Spider-Man offers because of the new film and they've been doing offers on Catwoman and Bane related stuff in the run up to The Dark Knight Rises

Lock Jaw 07-17-2012 06:00 PM

What kinda comics you want? Superhero? Non-superhero? Marvel? DC? Other?

Triple Naitch 07-17-2012 06:01 PM

Marvel, DC. I don't really know where to start. Give me some of the big names to start with.

The Destroyer 07-17-2012 06:01 PM

My first quick suggestion, since it was one of the first I read when I got into comics properly, give The Ultimates a go. First two volumes, at least.

Triple Naitch 07-17-2012 06:23 PM

The Ultimates looks mad expensive. Is it worth $11 for a comic?

Nowhere Man 07-17-2012 06:37 PM

You don't like The Death and Return of Superman, but you actually like "For Tomorrow"? Weirdo.

More Superman I'd recommend is "Up, Up, and Away" and "Back in Action"

PapaGeorgio 07-17-2012 07:24 PM

I don't read many comics really but did read Walking Dead comics and greatly enjoyed those.

Triple Naitch 07-17-2012 09:03 PM

Started reading Amazing Spiderman: Brand New Day and Batman: Gotham Adventures. Gonna get Batman: Year One once I finish all my free comics and am still int it.

Death and Return is too 90s for me. And I guess I'm a little biased towards For Tomorrow just because I'm a huge Azzarello fan. Plus I liked the weird satanic-ghost-whatever-thing version of General Zod, because it made him something different than just 'Superman except evil,' and I liked the look of Metropia and the fact that they used the Birthright-era design for Krypton. In hindsight though, yeah, I'd probably skip it if you're just getting into comics.

Good choice with Up Up and Away, though--Busiek's Superman is fantastic.

Preacher.

I thought reading comics on the computer screen is terrible, but this story was so great I soon didn't care how I read it.

The Destroyer 07-18-2012 05:21 AM

Comixology actually does it in a really good way, at least on handheld devices. It basically follows the comic panel by panel, gives it a really nice flow.

The $11 thing for The Ultimates is probably the collected edition of the first six issues of the first series. You should be able to pick up issue one for $1.99, although I'd recommend maybe trying a few issues beyond that, since issue one is mostly just an extended flashback.

The Ultimates is really good. Same with most of Ultimate X-Men (at least up until Cable, and here and there after that up until the terrible series-killing Banshee/Alpha Flight arc)

The Destroyer 07-18-2012 09:59 AM

The early Ultimate universe stuff was generally pretty good. Then along came Jeph Loeb. :(

Not even sure what it's like these days.

loopydate 07-18-2012 10:20 AM

I haven't read anything since Ultimatum.

What an awful awful piece of work that was.

The Destroyer 07-18-2012 11:38 AM

I've read a couple of the Ultimate Avengers miniseries which seemed alright, but I've not touched it since they last relaunched it.

The Destroyer 07-20-2012 02:01 AM

If you're still interested in Batman stuff, Comixology have got 201 issues on sale for The Dark Knight Rises - issues that make up good stuff like The Long Halloween, Hush, start of Morrison's run on Batman & Robin, The Dark Knight Returns and assorted other things.

99 cents an issue or 69 pence in real money.
