Wrestlings Forgotten Moment: Luger Beats Hogan

Seriously, who talks about this? No one.

It was perhaps one of the biggest moments in WCW history and one of the biggest pops ever. After WCW was dominated for so long by the NWO they were finally fighting back and getting some ground. Hogan was champ for a year. Was never around but anyone who came close was shut down by the NWO.

Finally Luger did it. He won it all. He saved WCW. He was thew Hero. The Savior. He knocked out the whole NWO to win it. He was the new icon of wrestling.

Then 5 days later lost to hogan and was never in the main event again.

What are your thoughts on this whole thing?

How was this just put under the carpet?

Big Vic 09-29-2014 09:55 AM

Because WCW forgot it too.

Shisen Kopf 09-29-2014 10:00 AM

That happened at NITRO at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Guess who was at that show?

Big Vic 09-29-2014 10:09 AM

Did Juan sneak in?

Anybody Thrilla 09-29-2014 02:14 PM

My guess is nobody talks about it because Lex Luger fucking sucked. I dunno for sure, though.

DaveBrawl 09-29-2014 02:54 PM

You take that back right now.

Hanso Amore 09-29-2014 02:55 PM

Yeah he sucked but he was mad over at that point. It was a major angle. WCW FINALLY WINS BACK THE TITLE! LUGER BROUGHT IT HOME! Then they buried him and built to Sting at starcade. I get that Luger was sort of filler to occupy Hogan while they built sting, but I remember watching that night and marking the fuck out!

DaveBrawl 09-29-2014 03:00 PM

Lex Luger should probably still be champion to this day.

DaveBrawl 09-29-2014 03:01 PM

17 year title reign.

whiteyford 09-29-2014 03:02 PM

You spelt Scott Norton wrong there Mr Brawl.

DaveBrawl 09-29-2014 03:44 PM

If Scott Norton had done the torture rack, I probably would have been his biggest fan.

Lock Jaw 09-29-2014 03:48 PM

Forgot how much I liked Lex Luger's WCW theme

Nowhere Man 09-29-2014 03:50 PM

I think you kind of answered your own question: they overlooked Luger's win because they wanted to build towards Sting. My guess is that Bischoff and company decided Hogan/Sting would be a way bigger draw than Hogan/Luger, and that Sting taking the title off of him wouldn't be as big of a deal if everyone remembered that Luger had already done it.

Of course, that just raises the question of why they put the title on Luger in the first place if they really wanted Sting to be the one to knock off Hogan, but hey, WCW was pretty stupid an awful lot of the time.

loopydate 09-29-2014 03:56 PM

I assumed a more recent reason was all the Lex/Liz stuff. They've swept a lot of guys with questionable pasts under the rug over the years.

Nicky Fives 09-29-2014 04:04 PM

seemed kind of pointless to me.....

Emperor Smeat 09-29-2014 04:20 PM

Was pretty stupid and all it did was just give a mini-break to Hogan hogging the belt at the time.

Both of Luger's reigns ended up being mishandled or rushed badly by WCW.

Legit pissed me off that they just had him turn later. It was one of the hottest fucking matches ever and they just said, fuck it.

slik 09-29-2014 04:37 PM

When it happened I remember thinking it was a surprise. The match was really short too iirc.

Oh wait, this isn't about the first Nitro...I don't even remember this at all. Luger beat Hogan? For the title? Damn.

Swiss Ultimate 09-29-2014 04:43 PM

It was his best match.

Bad News Gertner 09-29-2014 04:55 PM

Luger won becauae it was the 100th Nitro. That's about it.

Theo Dious 09-29-2014 06:20 PM

All I remember about that mach was the backstage celebration where they were scrubbing the nWo spraypaint off the belt.

Fignuts 09-29-2014 07:56 PM

It's not talked about, because Luger winning 5 days before the PPV made it blatantly obvious that he was just going to drop it back to Hogan at the event.

It was just a publicity stunt, nothing more.

Reallly shocked no one uses the rack right now. I know it was mentioned earlier i nthe thread.

Seems like Mason ryan should have been using it.

DaveBrawl 09-30-2014 03:56 PM

Love the torture rack so much, one of my favorite moves of all time.

Nicky Fives 09-30-2014 04:10 PM

It was always great seeing the referee try to follow the guy up in the rack as Luger spun around....

Nicki Bella does a modified torture rack move but she drops her oponnent, it isn't submission. its also stupidly called the Rack Attack but that should be the name of her splashing an opponent in the corner.

Tamina was doing a torture rack before she got hurt though.

SlickyTrickyDamon 09-30-2014 11:51 PM

What does it mean to be a hero? What does mean to be a man?

Damian Rey 09-30-2014 11:57 PM

Peewee Anderson marking out before calling for the bell was epic.

Droford 10-01-2014 12:00 AM

This probably was to make up for all the times NWA/WCW dicked him over in title matches prior, mostly with Flair. My favorite was the Maryland State Athletic Commission calling the match at GAB 88 due to him bleeding even though he had flair beat in the rack.

I also totally forgot he used a pile driver called the attitude adjustment after he won the title the first time as a heel.

Hogan attempts a new hold called the shoulder press on luger. Not sure of the outcome. Possible submission??

Lock Jaw 10-01-2014 12:17 AM

I remember Lex Luger fighting The Giant every week and every time picking him up in the Torture Rack and every time Tony Schiavone would flip out and yell "HE PICKED UP THE GIANT!!! NO ONE HAS EVER PICKED UP THE GIANT BEFORE!!!"
