Could Rey Mysterio be a credible WWE Champion?

Over the last couple of weeks I have heard a lot of speculation about Mysterio abandoning the cruiserweight division(which is happening now) and recieving a push toward main event status. Do you think that Mysterio could be a credible champ? He has already attained singles victories over Mark Jindrak, Rene Dupree, and Eddie Guerrero. If WWE does push him do you think he will be embraced as a championship quality contender by the fans?

If Mysterio does become WWE Champion then he will be the smallest WWE Champion ever. Over the past 16 years WWE fans have become more accepting of smaller champions: Randy Savage, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Eddie Guerrero, and Chris Beniot all come to mind. However, all these men still look rather large when compared to Mysterio. The only person that comes to mind to be a World Champion(in America) is "Rugged" Ronnie Garvin. Taz(z) stands 5'9" but he also had a very stocky build. I do think Mysterio has the skills to main event but his stature will be the biggest factor w/ the fans and critics.

If he ever becomes Champion, he'll not only be the smallest in WWE history, but also the youngest.

Funky Fly 03-23-2005 07:18 PM

If they do it right, yes. I would have accepted him as WCW champion that time he almost beat Flair like 7 years ago. He had that giant killer gimmick and was way over with the crowd. Flair wasn't a giant, and I could certainly see him having a 2-3 month reign, where he defends the title every week in another giant killer gimmick, until someone like a heel Undertaker or JBL beats him after he "suffers" a worked injury the week before on Smackdown.

The Icon of Elisim 03-23-2005 07:19 PM

Mysterio could be a credible WWE champion as long as his wins are sold more on him having heart and guts and less on getting fluke roll ups against hosses

redoneja 03-23-2005 07:19 PM

The youngest WWE Champion, right? Orton was the youngest World Heavyweight Champio.

Bobby The Brain Heenan said Mysterio is 12. :shifty:

Maybe he could team w/ Freddy Adu

Savio 03-23-2005 07:21 PM

I remember everyone in the areana going crazy when Rey hurricanrana'd Flair off the top rope. Stupid Arn Anderson punking out the ref

The CyNick 03-23-2005 07:22 PM

I think he could be.

Obviously its all based on how they book him, but people accepted Rey beating Eddie, and Eddie was WWE Champion, so.

If they were to do it, I just hope its not a deal where Rey wins by a fluke and he never looks credible.

Funky Fly 03-23-2005 07:22 PM

GIANT KILLER

BigDaddyCool 03-23-2005 07:24 PM

No, Rey couldn't. He would have to win it from a smaller guy to begin with, like Beniot, Jericho, or Eddie, or maybe Angle. And that is where Rey speed doesn't mean as much.

If he ever did make it to that point, I would be very suprised. I could see him winning a US/IC championship or 2, but not World/WWE.

Jonster 03-23-2005 07:24 PM

How old is Mysterio then?

Yeah, I think so. They'd have to keep Taker well away though.

Gerard 03-23-2005 08:28 PM

Not a fucking chance. Mysterio vs big show and mysterio winning cleanly? Real beleivable.

Um, yes it is. Mysterio goes RIGHT for Show's knee and stays on it the whole match, he hurts him so bad Show can barely stand up, then Rey pins him. NOT hard.

And what exactly is "rey" gonna do to hurt shows knee? Hes definately the right height to lay in a few punches and that sorta thing. Show nosells chair shots etc but somehow this little guy tapping his knee is hurting him? :wtf: It would take show to injure it himself to look even halfway convincing, run into the steps or whatever, and having a 5 foot 3 inch wrestler who's nowhere near half shows weight somehow keep him down for the pin would look even more stupid, would take mysterio 2 arms just to hook his leg to any height.

I'm fairly sure Mysterio went over Show (AKA The Giant then) cleanly in WCW.

He certainly went over Kevin Nash and Bam Bam Bigelow.

I remember him beating nash, that looked retarded, nash goes for the powerbomb, falls back with mysterio on him and somehow falling back keeps him down for the pin.

The CyNick 03-23-2005 08:59 PM

I could easily see him beating a guy like JBL or Angle, and the fans would be fine with it, especially Angle. Actually Rey beating Angle for the WWE title would be pretty cool.

Hired Hitman 03-23-2005 09:04 PM

I think so, Because he is such a cool guy :$

Nothing a solid kick to the knackers with the referee not looking couldn't take care of.

Id hardly call a low blow a clean win, with a low blow yeah id say it would be beleivable, but without it would just look stupid i think.

Exactly, Rey has already gone a good distance with Angle and looked like he could've beaten him. Plus, he's beaten Eddy who's beaten Brock etc.

Like I said, as long as Taker was kept well away from the title scene, I think the casual fan would accept it.

The Naitch 03-23-2005 10:19 PM

yes. The belt would look funny on him though since it'd be so big

After the JBL error I'll take a Ceana/Ray program anytime.

Fox 03-23-2005 11:14 PM

It would work under the proper circumstances.

First of all, it could never happen on RAW. Rey Mysterio vs. Triple H is ridiculous and a Mysterio victory is impossible.

But on Smackdown, it's very likely and could be believable. It all depends on his opponents. A champion Rey Mysterio could feud with Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, or John Cena. He has to wrestle guys who aren't considered "huge" (like Batista, Big Show, and Heidenreich are "huge"), and they have to be guys who can go with him in the ring. Rey works a very fast, very athletic style, and a feud against Big Show or JBL would be utterly boring and ridiculous.

Playing him up to be the ultimate underdog Champion would be perfect. Mysterio picks up a huge Title victory on PPV, and the next TV show his opponent plays it off as a complete fluke. Mysterio fights all of his opponents, and doesn't win in lame fashions (like the Kevin Nash victory, or the low-blow victory over Rick Norton in WCW). He always goes toe-to-toe with his opponents, and the result is always in question because Mysterio never has the true upper hand, but he always wins.

Not only could he be a credible champion (because no one can argue that he's not good enough), but he could be one of the most entertaining champions of all time.

Aussie Skier 03-24-2005 01:31 AM

rey could b world champ, without a doubt

Eunos 03-24-2005 03:56 AM

I think it be interesting to see ReyRey as Champ.

Sadly i think his size means he never will. Even though i can see him challenging for it in the near future.

Impact! 03-24-2005 06:31 AM

I think there's more chance for RVD to be the champ when he gets back.

*starts praying RVD comes back as a heel with heyman as a manager and wins the WWE championship*

Impact! 03-24-2005 06:33 AM

actually a RVD vs reyrey fued for the title (any title for that matter) could be pretty interesting, maybe even through in eddie somewhere along the line

Yeah and i've beaten 5 star flash, who's beaten doug williams who's beaten Eddie G

Making me the former WWE Champ, therefore I'm the youngest ever champ mutha fuckers

Rey has pinned Angle cleanly before - around the time he joined Smackdown before their Summerslam 2002 match

Cruiserweight 3:16 03-24-2005 07:43 AM

I seriously doubt that Rey could be a credible WWE Champion. Have any of you seen him up close? I have before backstage and he is so small. It may sound bizarre, but he has huge shoulders but a tiny waist.

Putting the WWE title on him is too far fetched because an average sized guy could possibly beat the crap outta him, whereas with guys like Benoit and Eddie, at least they have the build to look credible even if the do lack the height compared to past champions.

I'm not saying I don't rate the guy, and I reckon it would be great if he did challenge for the title (perhaps in a couple of triple threat PPV matches), but unfortunately he is too small to win the title.

I believe that WWE will forever ensure that their champs have "above average" builds. Even the "smaller" wrestlers that became champ(Hart, Savage, Michaels) would still be considered large men compared to the avg Joe Schmo.

Therefore i do not believe WWE would(but I believe they could) make Rey into anythign more than an "underdog" champion.
