What is your favourite SNES rpg?

I've been going to OCR a lot lately and getting songs since I formatted recently and needed to pick a few classics up. Ventured into the songs from Chrono Trigger and brought back memories. What's your favourite SNES rpg? Personally I've always been one of the Square fanbois and swore to FF6 and CT, but I've always really really liked Lufia 2 as well. I think I like Lufia even more than Final Fantasy, because it's less generic. I mean yeah all the SNES games are pretty generic, but Lufia ruled 'cause it actually had some decent puzzles in it, and at the time had a pretty hot battle system. IP ftw. Storyline wasn't nearly as good as either FF6's or CT's, but it was passable. Plus, Ancient Cave = insaaaaaaaaaane replayability. Seriously I played the Ancient Cave like 10x more than the actual storyline. Such a fun sidequest thingy, and very rewarding when you gather up enough blue chests to actually have a shot of completing it.

Anyway, I've only mentioned 3 games here 'cause those are the ones I mainly enjoy, just wondering what other games people liked from back in teh dayy

The only ones I ever really got into were Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana.

But they were pretty damn good :y:

Gouda 06-05-2005 09:55 PM

It's a toss up between FF6 and Super Mario RPG.

The Fugitive 06-05-2005 10:11 PM

Breath of Fire II was awesome.

AareDub 06-05-2005 10:34 PM

Chrono Trigger and Mario RPG

Silent 06-05-2005 10:41 PM

Earthbound definitely the best, the storyline was really fun, and the humor was great.

I also loved Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana/Evermore, Final Fantasy 3...

Bricktop 06-05-2005 10:59 PM

Final Fantasy III (6) is my all time fav.

final fantasy II and Super Mario RPG were also awesome.

M. Banana 06-05-2005 11:25 PM

Super Mario RPG

Sepholio 06-06-2005 08:15 AM

Tales of Phantasia is pretty awesome. So is Terranigma. Super Mario RPG and FF3(6) are all insanely awesome as well.

Try Treasure Hunter G if you can find the translation for it, it is pretty sick.

Another awesome game if you can find the translation for it is Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2). Third best RPG on the system behind FF6 and my all-time favorite, CT.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was pretty short but really quality, the music on it ruled the most.

Secret of Mana was fucking awesome, and again the music in it is immense.

My favorite of all though is Secret of Mana 2, i've played like every class on every character (6 characters in the game, 4 final classes per character, only 3 characters in a party) so when you work that out, i've played it quite a lot. :o

Marcyo 06-06-2005 08:56 AM

Super Mario RPG was and still is great.

Oxstar 06-06-2005 09:44 AM

It appears my first and last rpg was final fantasy 7, i never played an rpg on the snes.

MVP 06-06-2005 11:02 AM

Chrono Trigger is my all-time fav. Earthbound, FF4, FF6, SMRPG, and Secret of Mana are also the goods.

Super NES is the only system that beats out PSone with RPG's.

Shaved Monkey 06-06-2005 11:23 AM

Earthbound, and Secret of Mana, two fantastic rpgs.

Ninti the Mad 06-06-2005 11:48 AM

FF3(6)

I absolutely love the combat system and job classes.

Honorable mention goes to FF:Mystic Quest as it was the first true RPG I ever beat.

bull c 06-06-2005 02:25 PM

Chrono Trigger, followed by Super Mario RPG. But Lufia 2 was awesome as well.

OMG forgot about Earthbound when I wrote this. Such a ridiculously awesome game. I really wish they'd make another Earthbound game, don't care which console. It was such an awesome FUN original game. The battle system was kinda eh, but the trippy graphics and music were cool. Loved the storyline and goofy atmosphere of the whole game. omg gonna go play it tonight

Yeah, Nintendo's been teasing an Earthbound remake for YEARS.

They better do it too. x.x;

By the way. Chrono Trigger = Ratings. :D

Arashi Kage 06-18-2005 02:05 PM

Secret of Evermore
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound

I always preferred Secret of Evermore for it's real time battles, rather than turn based. All 3 of those games have great stories.

The Highlander 06-28-2005 05:57 AM

Final Fantasy V

and I've beaten them all from IV - X and X-2, including M.Q.

Secret of Mana was OK, but I prefer traditional battle systems such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior.

Deceit 06-28-2005 09:11 AM

Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Earthbound

Innovator 06-28-2005 12:58 PM

Secret of Mana, first one RPG for SNES I played. Simply awesome

Earthbound, can't say another more that hasn't been said already

Chrono Trigger, badass game

Super Mario RPG, cmon you don't get any better than having Bowser team up with Mario

Kapoutman 06-28-2005 03:15 PM

Super Mario RPG

Hired Hitman 06-28-2005 08:10 PM

Earthbound.

there are alot of good RPGs that came out for the SNES in my opinion. FF4 was one of the better ones (if not for the systems that were ahead of their times within the game, it gets props for being REALLY FREAKING HARD).

FF6 was, by far, one of the most captivating storylines I've ever witnessed. Before I played this one all the way through, I had thought FF7 was the best out of the Final Fantasy games. But...FF6 is THE FF game.

Earthbound was a cool one, if not a weird one. I liked that it used actual American dollar currency as the money in the game rather than gold pieces or gil in it, and the "rolling" thing with the HP meters was a neat concept. This one was a bit on the difficult side, too.

Yeah, I'll have Chrono Trigger on here, too. It had an innovative way of replay value (THIRTEEN different endings). And if we didn't have Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross would've never came out for the PSX (which I heard is one of the best PSX RPG's ever).

If you guys can get a SNES Emulator and know of good ROM sites, look for a SNES RPG named Sailor Moon: Another Story (someone has translated it quite well to English). It has not ever been released here, and it's a damn shame, because it has one of the more innovative (in it's time) systems for attacking called "Link-Up" attacks, a la Chrono Trigger, that you could make with two compatiable characters, and then use that attack on a foe, provided they were all in your immediate party. Party formations (you could have FIVE in your immediate party) were also nice. It might be REALLY FREAKIN HARD, and you will need some knowledge of the SM manga/anime storyline in order to really enjoy the storyline in this game, but people who are willing to download some things onto your computer should check that one out.

Super Mario RPG kicked ass. Too bad they decided to follow it up with Paper Mario (never played the latter game myself, but heard it's not a true sequal of any kind).

Absolutely Legend of Zelda, Super Mario RPG & Earthbound. I just purchased a copy of Link to the Past yesterday. I've beaten it before but we got rid of our SNES years ago and just recently purchased a used one.

V 07-02-2005 11:23 PM

Chrono, Fucking, Trigger

that is crono in my avatar for the ignorant, i  the game enough to make it my permanent avatar

Mayo 07-04-2005 11:56 PM

FF2 and 3 (US)
Chrono Trigger
Breath of Fire 1

Can't recall much of Earthbound but I know I beat it before. Also I tried a Breath of Fire 2 ROM for about 10 mins and it seemed so shitty that I never touched it again.

They have a GBA version of it now, it's with the Four Swords game. They changed a few minor things with the dialogue (maybe to save space on the small cartrage), but it's still freakin AWESOME!!
