I've Been Hijacked

OK....

Basically I went onto a site that blasted my NEW PC with those browser hi-jackers etc. As a result, my homepage changed, pop-ups started coming up and PC works slower I think.

So why, when Norton Security 2005, Ad-Aware and that new Microsoft windows spyware detects and "removes" the found files, does it just keep coming back and happening all over again????

I dont know what to do, I have already taken this computer back and had it re-formatted/re-installed.

Can someone tell me how I can settle all this?

If its a case of re-installing windows, do I just insert the XP CD, start the set-up and re-install it? or do I have to programme or set all of the drivers, hardware etc? How long does it all take and is it complicated?

Thanks to anyone who reads/replies.

Do you happen to know the name of the spyware/virus?

Download Hijack This here and run it. Do system scan and save a log file and post the log file here.

First thing first, download a program called GarbageClean. You will need to sign up to download it because it's in beta stage but it gets rid of pretty much all this crap that others can't. Here is the program and here is where you can sign up. Next, run Hijack This again and check all the "R" options and click fix. That should fix the browser settings. Next thing is that these processes are all part of your virus:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atlzg.exe] C:\WINDOWS\atlzg.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [netue32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\netue32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iepx32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\iepx32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [addqh.exe] C:\WINDOWS\addqh.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winqw.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winqw.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [addfu.exe] C:\WINDOWS\addfu.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [d3eo.exe] C:\WINDOWS\d3eo.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [winik32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\winik32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [apimc32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\apimc32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [d3bz32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3bz32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ntzo32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\ntzo32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [netwe32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\netwe32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [atlty32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlty32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ipns32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipns32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [iegk.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\iegk.exe

The best thing to do is restart windows and go into safe mode (this is the best thing to do any time you have something like this because it keeps the processes that usually respawn files from starting up). Just restart and keep clicking the F8 key and that should bring up the option. I usually go into Safe Mode with Networking in case I need to get online and find instructions. Run both Microsoft Spyware and Ad-aware if that's what you have and then run that GarbageClean. Run Hijack This again and select all those O4s, if they are still there, with the random letters and numbers. Or you can use all the ones from above one by one if you need.

Go to Start > Run > regedit

Then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and see if any of those are in there. If they are, select and delete them if they are until that and all the "Run" folders are clear of them. Then restart and hopefully you will be ok.

Good luck. If I remember anything else I'll post it. Tell me how it goes.

Jalapeño 08-23-2005 03:50 AM

Just Wondering, but did this virus make windows in the bottom left corner (taskbar) pop up that looked exactly like the Windows messages?

I'll take a screenshot if you need.

Jon Kano 08-23-2005 12:22 PM

It made pop-ups for all sorts of crap come up with a typical windows style frame, thats about it.

DS thanks for your help. If I can't do it I will just end up reinstalling XP, and start with a fresh virginial machine.

DS 08-23-2005 02:14 PM

If nothing else just download and run that GarbageClean program normally in windows and restart.

el fregadero 08-23-2005 09:24 PM

It wouldn't happen to be called Aurora, would it, Mr. Kano?

DS 08-23-2005 09:36 PM

No it's not the Aurora virus. Just a browser hijacker.

el fregadero 08-23-2005 10:11 PM

Oh, so this Auroura thing is a virus? Would probably explain why Ad-Aware didn't seem to be working.

DS 08-23-2005 10:47 PM

It's a mix. Use the GC program above and scan after restarting in safe mode. Restart and hopefully you should be fine.

el fregadero 08-24-2005 12:07 AM

So everything that Garbage Clean thing finds is stuff you should delete, right? Not gonna turn out to be the thing that actually makes the computer work?

DS 08-24-2005 12:11 AM

Right.

el fregadero 08-24-2005 12:12 AM

I'll take your word on it, pal.

el fregadero 08-24-2005 12:13 AM

YOU'D BETTER BE RIGHT THOUGH. I've had it up to here with computers.

Jon Kano 08-24-2005 12:54 PM

Same here. The net is just full of crap made by assholes now.

el fregadero 08-25-2005 01:50 AM

Pretty sure I got it from browsing TPWW, too.

So dont go to crap sites made by assholes then. or open attachments sent by assholes. its a pretty simple rule really.

Jon Kano 08-28-2005 05:27 PM

I didnt do any of that.

This PC is brand new, fuckin 200gb, 2mb broadband - WE JUST got it.

These hijackers came on when I was lookin through download.com for applications.

CREDO 09-01-2005 07:28 AM

Well theres your answer isnt it.

Download.com is full of free trials and shareware, these applications, in order to keep them free, are coupled with tons of crap you dont see that infest your system.

Jon Kano 09-01-2005 12:00 PM

But I didnt download ANY application(s) - I got it from a webpage.

DS 09-01-2005 01:50 PM

Download.com scans all the programs they put up for any time of spyware/virus/trojans/etc anyways so you wouldn't have gotten it from them.

CREDO 09-01-2005 02:44 PM

Oh Yeah, for sure, and kazaa is spyware free also...

DS 09-01-2005 02:48 PM

You seem to have taken offense to this thread, Credo.

Jon Kano 09-01-2005 07:18 PM

He is isnt he?

Wonder why.

....,wait...no I dont.

el fregadero 09-02-2005 01:53 AM

In other news, I started using Firefox and haven't gotten one popup/spyware thing since.
