Brokeback Mountain

If it weren't for the Boondocks comic strip, I would have never heard anything about it.

Apperently, its about two gay cowboys being secretly gay or something. I dunno, has anyone seen it?

Boondock Saint 12-08-2005 08:34 PM

It's supposedly great. I'm gonna try to check it out.

Joey Slugs 12-09-2005 11:41 PM

Ang Lee directed it, might be worth a look.

loopydate 12-10-2005 02:13 AM

Thought the same thing about "Hulk..."

But, yeah, "Brokeback" is getting fantastic reviews, and Heath Ledger is getting major Oscar buzz. Supposed to be excellent. Unique, too, in that it depicts two "all-American" characters ('cause what's more American than cowboys?) who fall in love...and both happen to be men. Can't think of another mainstream movie like that.

I didn't even know it was out yet.

...no pun intended.

Funky Fly 12-10-2005 04:58 AM

Gonna suggest this to my homophobic cousin.

YOUR Hero 12-10-2005 02:24 PM

I doubt I could watch it. I would feel uncomfortable.

Funky Fly 12-10-2005 06:22 PM

Yeah, I can chill with gay guys, but watching mansex would be creepy.

Shadow 12-10-2005 07:43 PM

Look for the hit sequal to this movie coming next year.

Brokeback Kong

Skippord 12-11-2005 08:41 AM

Reminds me of that South Park with the independant films

LOL gay cowboys eating pudding

RoXer 12-11-2005 01:49 PM

Unlike classic westerns, this time the good guys get it in the end.

Boondock Saint 12-11-2005 05:21 PM

Oh snap

Nothing says "all American" like an Aussie playing a gay cowboy.

And no I don't think I'll run out and see it (I'll watch it in the closet)

MVP 01-07-2006 04:33 PM

Bump

Excellent movie. Heath Ledger did a great job portraying a gay man who refuses to accept his sexuality, and Jake Gyllenhall was gold as always. I was pretty uncomfortable with the graphic scenes, but Anne Hathaway's tits made up for it. I don't like chick flicks, but objectively I can say it was really good.

Spoilers (highlight): I never felt more sympathy for a gay guy when Jack got killed at the end. Very sad.

YOUR Hero 01-07-2006 04:58 PM

I have to wonder if this movie is being praised simply because of it's bold content. Is it really as good as they say or are people simple glad-handling it.

Boondock Saint 01-07-2006 05:39 PM

That's what I was thinking but I finally saw it last week and I think it certainly deserves the praise. It's not the best movie ever or anything but definitely one of the best of the year. As I was watching it I thought "Yeah this is pretty good". But the more I think back on it the more I like it.

Downunder 01-07-2006 07:03 PM

Do they eat pudding?

Fox 01-08-2006 01:38 AM

First of all: Ang Lee is a GOD when it comes to backgrounds and scenery. There are some overwhelmingly beautiful shots in this film; so much that they actually take away from the story. The mountains, the lakes, the rivers; everything is shot with the eye of a true photographic artist. Hats off to Lee.

As far as the movie goes, I have to admit, it was pretty good. Ledger's Oscar Buzz is truly deserving, and Jake Gyllenhaal, while kind of weak in this movie, holds his own as well. Heath really, really makes you believe he is his character, and his gruff attitude never comes off as forced, but all natural.

Now, for the important part: the gay sex. I admit, it made me cringe. I thought I might be able to sit there, watch the screen, and be able to detach myself from what was going on. I was wrong. Watching Jake and Heath make out was just too much; I had to turn away. I'm not homophobic in any way, but that was seriously too much for me.

Other than that, it was a good movie. Maybe a little too long, maybe a little too dragged out, but a good movie none-the-less.

MVP 01-08-2006 11:28 PM

At least the gay fucking being thrown in first made everything else seem tolerable, though still awkward.

Good review.

And don't worry, it doesn't make you homophobic to be uncomfortable at witnessing a homosexual love scene.

El Capitano Gatisto 01-09-2006 12:53 PM

I doubt it could be as uncomfortable viewing as certain parts of The Woodsman, even with being more graphic.

It is getting great reviews everywhere, which is unusual. I was thinking "Oscar film" and I hate Oscar films, and this year's Oscar acting adversity would be playing a gay, rather than a handicap, a Jew or a black or whatever else it has been recently.

Skippord 01-09-2006 06:40 PM

Hulk was gayer

samichna 01-18-2006 11:30 AM

Bareback Mountain

El Capitano Gatisto 08-18-2006 10:16 PM

I just saw this tonight and thought it was excellent. A really good take on the love story.

What's so cringeworthy about the gay sex scene anyway? It lasts all of 15 seconds and it's a couple of men grunting beside each other. Most Hollywood sex scenes linger for ages, this was almost perfunctory. That said they don't waste much time over the straight sex scenes either.

Anyway, the performances are brilliant, excellent enough to make me forget all the talk over the premise and to enjoy it for what it was.

Also it's not a gay issue film or trying to make a point. It's a love story, like I said, one that also gives time to show the point of view of the neglected wife and how the lack of real love and affection from Ledger's character affects her, as she sees how alive he becomes when his lover comes to town. It's about the relationships in the story and the people involved.

Most Hollywood sex scenes don't feature Donnie Darko basically raping the dude from A Knight's Tale and then passionately making out with him. That's why.

El Capitano Gatisto 08-19-2006 09:45 AM

So, say, images of people being beaten up or killed are less difficult to watch than a couple of blokes kissing each other?

ct2k 08-19-2006 12:48 PM

Come on ECG, the way most guys see it if you don't cringe, you're one of them....Are you?:shifty:

El Capitano Gatisto 08-19-2006 02:17 PM

No. I have a degree and a girlfriend. I anticipated something a bit hotter than that for the gay sex scene after people talking about how uncomfortable it was. Ludicrous claims. They didn't even go for slow passionate kisses either, it was all grabbing and almost wrestling. If there's any part where Gyllenhal and Ledger were unconvincing, it was when they had to kiss each other.

Two sets of bird's tits were also on show. All in all it was fairly tame.

Fox 08-20-2006 08:44 PM

I suppose everyone has their own barometer of what makes them uncomfortable or not. That scene, as a fan of both Ledger's and Gyllenhaal's work, made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Sure it could have been much worse, but for what it was, it made me not want to be sitting there watching it with my girlfriend.

That is all.

Anyway, that was supposed to be a sex scene? That was like, lamer'n fuck. Do you also find Ernie and BErt too Graphic?

Skippord 08-20-2006 11:55 PM

Ernie:Bert you're shouting again Bert

FourFifty 08-21-2006 12:49 PM

When people talk about this movie, from what I've seen, there are two groups of people, and I'd like to talk to these two groups of people.

For everyone who hasn't seen the movie because it's gay
It's not as graphic as you say everyone says it is. Yea, a dude gets fucked in the ass, but it's not like you're watching "Gay Butt Ninjas From Mars Part XII". It's not a porno. A couple of dudes make out, but that's nothing that you won't see in west Hollywood or Palm Springs. It's a totally decent love story, but it's just about two guys.

For Eveyone who has seen the movie and thinks it's awesome
Shut the hell up. It's good, but not great, and it's not novel. Watch "Boys Don't Cry" if you think Brokeback is the first gay love story. Hell, "Boys Don't Cry" was based on a true strory. Back to Brokeback... It's the most overhyped two hours I've ever sat through. It's nothing new and it's not great.

El Capitano Gatisto 08-21-2006 01:21 PM

Who said it was the first gay love story, dickhead. No one. Boys Don't Cry is about something completely different as well. There's no comparison.

Kane Knight 08-21-2006 01:57 PM

If you think that gays and transgenders are interchangeable, 450, I swear I'm gonna hit you.

It is "novel," by the way, more for its look at homosexuality less from a perspective that this is a "gay" movie, and more along the lines of a love story. It also addresses a population not normally touched upon (Gays in isolated, red state environments) and the presentation plays this up well.

That being said, I find that Ledger's part is unconvincing, I think the movie was stretched out more than it needed to be, and I wish people would stop fellating it as though it were flawless, but I think you missed the boat in a lot of your commentary.

No, I don't, but I bet there's more people out there who have seen Boys Don't Cry than there are people who have seen Bar Girls, Latter Days, Tipping The Velvet, Maurice, Boys Breifs, The Sum Of Us or Edge Of Seventeen.

I live in 29 Palms, CA. This city is known for having the world largest (by size) marine base. Most marines I meet are hardcore homophobes, so I've given up hope on trying to tell people that homosexuals and trangenders (not to mention intergeners) aren't all in the same group.
Most people who see that movie out here see it like this.
"Dude loves out with a girl.
Dude is really a girl.
Girl loves a girl?
Gay."

I'm sorry if I offended anyone if they thought I lumped transgender and homosexuals in the same group.

That doesn't make it even remotely appropriate.

Seriously. Would you compare Brokeback Mountain to E.T. Because more people have seen it?

I hope you know the internet is a different group of people. For example, many Marines are too stupid to find their way on here.

Further, if you're adressing people who are gushing over this movie because it's unique or whatever the strawman argument was, I somehow doubt many Marines are going to fall into that circle. You yourself have addressed that they tend to be rabidly homophobic and closed-minded. Do you honestly think that these are the folks who will be wowed by Brokeback Mountain? Uhhh...Yeah. So why not try and get it right for those of us a little more intelligent than your average inanimate carbon rod?

I somehow doubt you offended anyone with the notion, but you did lump them. Sorry, but you did.

On second thought...

On behalf of the TPWWAOFDAT (TPWW Alliance of Fags, Dykes, and Trannies), I demand you be strung up, and forcibly turned into a woman.

There was a consensus. Both of us agreed.

I demand you don't lump gays and tranies together.

Kane Knight 08-22-2006 11:40 AM

That would be beautifully ironic, if the foundation wasn't so retarded.

Petethegeekstreet 08-22-2006 11:43 AM

Oh no, it being retarded doesn't hurt the irony at all.

Petethegeekstreet 08-22-2006 11:43 AM

On the contrary in fact.
