Does Pete Rose deserve to be in the HoF?

Yes/No and explain why.

RP 03-28-2006 12:20 AM

he's a douche

Supreme Olajuwon 03-28-2006 12:31 AM

of course he does

he's one of the greatest players ever

Joey Slugs 03-28-2006 12:38 AM

There is no need for an explanation. The numbers speak for themselves.

Y2C 03-28-2006 05:20 AM

No, coz he got his arse kicked by Kane in heaps of Wrestlemanias.

FakeLaser 03-28-2006 12:15 PM

You'd think he'd be satisfied with being in the WWE Hall of Fame.

loopydate 03-28-2006 01:02 PM

Absolutely. He did a whole lot more good for his teams than bad. You know, what with the World Series titles and the all-time hits record and all.

Sadly, though, I imagine he'll wind up voted in posthumously since it's a "lifetime" ban.

Boomer 03-28-2006 01:04 PM

Yeah. The numbers don't lie. He'll get it one day.

Rob 03-28-2006 02:02 PM

Yes he does. Someone correct me if I'm mistaken but he never gambled on his own team losing so it wasn't like he threw games. This would be like Diego Maradona not being allowed in any football Hall of Fame because he got fat and did a bit of coke. Mistakes happen.

Nervous Ferret 03-28-2006 02:22 PM

yeah never bet on his own team to lose. Check out the numbers, no way he shouldn't. :(

Supreme Olajuwon 03-28-2006 06:55 PM

If he bet on his team to lose he'd be broke as a joke. Maybe if more people bet on themselves to win they'd get 4000 hits too.

Loose Cannon 03-28-2006 07:30 PM

Nope.

That's Why

But Jackson bet against his team and cost them the World Series.

How many World Serieses (Series? Serie?) did Rose throw?

1975? Oh, wait. They won.
1976? Oh, wait. They won.
1980? Oh, wait. They won.

His teams lost in 1972 and 1983.

In '72, they went seven games against a very good Oakland team that had guys like Catfish Hunter (who was in the top 5 in wins and ERA that year), Joe Rudi (who hit .305), Mike Epstein and Reggie Jackson (who had 25+ HRs each). It was also three years before the "Big Red Machine" got rolling. Never heard a thing about Rose throwing this Series.

In '83, his Phillies lost 4-1 to Baltimore. By that point, Rose's career was practically over (He only hit .245 and it was the first season in his career where he averaged less than one hit per game). This was far from Rose's team anyway (it was Mike Schmidt's). Again, never heard word one about Rose costing the '83 Phillies the Series.

So, while the gambling thing connects Rose and Jackson, the situations were very different. Jackson's actually affected the games he was playing. Rose's didn't.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-28-2006 08:16 PM

That guy is clearly wearing shoes.

loopydate 03-28-2006 08:30 PM

So he is... Hmm...

Jackson never recieved a dime and only agreed because he was too "stupid" to really think about it. And he only hit.....

1919 World Series:
12/32 H/AB, 5 R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SO, .375 AVG, .562 SLG

"Shoeless" Joe Jackson might be the greatest player NOT in the hall and one of the top 10 players of all time.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-28-2006 08:58 PM

Whitey Ford, Don Sutton, and Gaylord Perry all openly admit to cheating while they played and they're all in the Hall. Babe Ruth was the first person to ever be caught with an illegal bat.

Look up Shoeless' numbers in the infamous playoffs.

Rose deserves to be in. Even if Joe Jackson doesn't get in, that's not Pete's fault. (although i know what you're point was)

I already gave you his 1919 World Series numbers, there were no "playoffs" then.

Loose Cannon 03-29-2006 09:07 AM

Yea, Slugs already argued for me what I would of argued. Jackson's numbers in that series put to rest any discussion of him costing the Sox the series. It was mostly Cicotte and Williams that screwed them over if we want to get into that discussion. Weaver played straight also. It's a load of crap that you don't have one of the top 5 left fielders of all-time in the Hall when all he was guilty of was knowledge of the fix.

Linkbowler 03-30-2006 11:16 PM

Rose gets in, but only as a player. There's no evidence of him gambling as a player, only as a manager. Put him in with a footnote re: gambling.

Gertner 03-30-2006 11:30 PM

yes and there's really no reason why he shouldn't

Indifferent Clox 03-30-2006 11:34 PM

yes
