House Shows

Anyone know why they're called "House Shows" Specifcally? I only ask because I was thinking of the whole "House Concert" concept, which is similar, except you actually play at someone's house.

My guess is that, in the 70's and 80's, when House Shows probably first started up, they were held in smaller arena, probably called houes due to their size, whereas the bigger events and PPVs were in larger arenas. That's my guess at least.

Maybe it's because they "play" at your "house". Your house being your city. I dunno, just thinking...

Theaters were--and in some places are--often referred to as 'houses'. We've all seen the cartoons in which the character asks the audience of the cinema if "There's a doctor in the house". This simply branched out to all venues as a business term, and since only the attendants in the venue get to see the non-televised events, they are deemed "House Shows". Or, to put it more succinctly, It's a "House Show", because only those in the house get to see it.
