Roethlisberger injured in motorcycle crash

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle crash Monday morning and taken to a hospital.

"He was alert and conscious," said Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service.

Steelers Dave Lockett, outside Mercy Hospital, confirmed the accident but did not provide additional details.

In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger helped guide the Steelers to the Super Bowl championship last season.

Calls to Roethlisberger's agent, Leigh Steinberg, were not immediately returned.

The 24-year-old Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional.

In May 2005, Steelers coach Bill Cowher lectured Roethlisberger on the dangers of riding without a helmet.

"He talked about being a risk-taker and I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."

AP Sports Writer Ben Walker contributed to this report.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has detailed the severity of Ben Roethlisberger's injuries.
"Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and severely injured both of his knees when he hit the ground," police said. A plastic surgeon has been summoned.

The Miz 06-12-2006 04:29 PM

SammyG 06-12-2006 05:24 PM

Holy fucking shit. That is terrible.

Supreme Olajuwon 06-12-2006 06:02 PM

God bless motorcycles

Gonzo 06-12-2006 06:58 PM

Should have been wearing a helmet, but god damn. That sucks, hope this doesn't ruin his career or anything.

UmbrellaCorporation 06-12-2006 07:34 PM

I saw this today when I was eating lunch, and freaked out. This is so bloody terrible. :(

Get well soon, Big Ben.

OssMan 06-12-2006 08:36 PM

Hey guys I have a wacky story, I was learning how to drive today and I drove on the roads for the first time and Ben Roethlisberger hit me on his motorcycle

RoXer 06-12-2006 08:39 PM

i love you assman

RoXer 06-12-2006 08:40 PM

Does somebody have that picture of him drunk?

BCWWF 06-12-2006 09:14 PM

Not trying to say anything about Roethlisberger, but the reaction to Jay Williams and Kellen Winslow was quite a bit different.

AlphaBean 06-13-2006 01:07 AM

How fucking ironic? I'm not the least bit surprised nor do I feel sorry for him in the least.

At least he's alive. But to be that stupid and to COME OUT ON FUCKING RECORD ADMITTING THAT YOU DO IT AND THINK IT'S SAFE.

He should get some pictures taken of himself and pay for some billboards so that the kids who looked up to him aren't such morons.

At least now Chad Hutchinson won't be the ugliest QB in the NFL.

Mr. Monday Morning 06-13-2006 12:06 PM

Last thing I read suggested he had a busted jaw and nose. Lost a bunch of teeth as well. Depending on how bad his jaw is he might not play next season, so who knows.

But yeah, complete moron. Apparently he was on like the fastest production bike in the world or something too. Nothing like dumb kids with money.

The Outlaw 06-13-2006 02:45 PM

Yeah, hey look at me I don't wear a helmet and think it's cool because it makes me a risktaker. ROAR.

Moron...and I'm a Ben fan too...

BCWWF 06-13-2006 03:28 PM

Can somebody remind us (me) what the extent of the Kellen Winslow and Jay Williams injuries were? Like were they wearing helmets or were their injuries more to their legs?

The Icon of Elisim 06-13-2006 04:30 PM

I dunno the extent of Jay Williams injury but only now is he rehabed enough to start working out for teams and his accident was in 2003 I think

BCWWF 06-13-2006 06:04 PM

Yeah, I'm not sure if the other guys will have had more long-term damage, but it seems like Big Ben's crash is the worst so far in terms of overall damage. That description of him is brutal.

Torn ACL for Kellen, FRACTURED HIP for Jay. He lost the feeling in his leg for a while. I remember they weren't sure he was gonna walk. Was there spine damage too? Dunno, but from what I've heard, Ben will be fine.

They said his mental functions are normal... lol... if that was true we wouldn't be in this "situation,"

But LOL at the Patriots, Colts and Steelers. The AFC elite is crumbling.

LONG LIVE THE DOLPHINS!

Hey come on, Mark Bavaro played with a broken jaw.

Just strap your helmet on real tight and use sign language. :D

Mr. Monday Morning 06-15-2006 05:29 AM

Sure I don't need to remind you there are 2 jaws, if he's fucked up his upper jaw that's a hell of a lot more serious than t'other.

Mr. Monday Morning 06-15-2006 05:29 AM

Also I'm unaware of who Mark Bavaro is.

RoXer 06-15-2006 01:24 PM

I don't....remember...starting this...

Buzzkill 06-15-2006 03:11 PM

Yeah I don't really feel sorry for him.

Ogen 06-15-2006 03:46 PM

Why would you make it optional to ride with no helmet? Can't even use a moped over here without one

Jesus Shuttlesworth 06-15-2006 03:51 PM

It goes by state by state here, really dunno why some states allow you ride without one.

SecretDesire 06-15-2006 04:16 PM

Ben knows thathe's a very important part of the Steelers. Personally I think although he deserves to be young, he's paid way too much to be stupid! Hopefully he'll learn from this...then again they never do!

Supreme Olajuwon 06-16-2006 01:46 AM

hopefully he does it again

Bad Company 06-16-2006 03:21 AM

rofl, tough break reno raines.

Team Sheep 06-19-2006 06:11 PM
