Better Team: 1999 Yankees V. 1994 Expos
This idea started (and continues) over the last few weeks with my friends and I. The conversation started with these two team that I have listed. Two of the most impressive teams in the last 20 years and one of them (guess who) didn't even finish the season.
What do you guys think? Who has the better team? Included are the final stats for that year. 1999 Yankees (98-64) - C - Jorge Posada 12/57/.245 1B - Tino Martinez 28/105/.263 2B - Chuck Knoblauch 18/68/.292 38 - Scott Brosius 17/71/.247 SS - Derek Jeter 9/24/.349 LF - Chad Curtis 5/24/.262 CF - Bernie Williams 25/115/.342 RF - Paul O'Neill 19/110/.285 DH - Chili Davis 19/78/.269 SP - Orlando Hernandez 17-9/4.12 SP - David Cone 12-9/3.44 SP - Andy Pettitte 14-11/4.70 SP - Roger Clemens 14-10/4.60 SP - Hideki Irabu 11-7/4.84 CL - Mariano Rivera 4-3/45/1.83 RP - Mike Stanton 2-2/0/4.33 RP - Jason Grimsley 7-2/1/3.60 RP - Ramiro Mendoza 9-9/3/4.29 RP - Jeff Nelson 2-1/1/4.15 1994 Expos (74-40) - C - Darrin Fletcher 10/57/.260 1B - Cliff Floyd 4/41/.281 2B - Mike Lansing 5/35/.266 38 - Sean Berry 11/41/.278 SS- Wil Cordero 15/63/.294 LF - Marquis Grissom 11/45/.288 CF - Moises Alou 22/78/.339 RF - Larry Walker 19/86/.322 SP - Ken Hill 16-5/3.32 SP - Pedro Martinez 11-5/3.42 SP - Jeff Fassero 8-6/2.99 SP - Kirk Rueter 7-3/5.17 SP - Butch Henry 8-3/2.43 CL - John Wetteland 4-6/25/2.83 RP - Mel Rojas 3-2/16/3.32 RP - Jeff Shaw 5-2/1/3.88 RP - Tim Scott 5-2/1/2.70 RP - Gil Heredia 6-3/0/3.46 |
If you guys want to compare two more teams... let me know which ones and I post a topic. I'm done with classes for the next two weeks so I'll need something to do while I'm at work.

Expos, 1999 Yankees disqualified because Jason Grimsley was on their team :shifty:
Jeez, Posada only hit .245?
1998 Yankees.
2004 Boston Red Sox
Actually I have no idea, since I was 8 when in 1994. |
I think I was 6.
I was nine, fuckers
I was 3

The Braves have had some pretty ridiculous teams in recent years
Well thank god for the strike, or otherwise the Braves wouldn't have the ridiculous streak to break this year thanks to those Expos.
99 Yankees for two reasons: Paul O'Neill is god and the 94 Expos would've lost to the Reds in the NLCS.
The Expos would have rolled over anything in their path. They were ahead of the Braves and were pulling away.
although I also <3 Paul O'Neill
I loved those Yankee years, for obvious reasons like, but yknow the players we had. O'Neill, Bernie in his prime, Jeter, Knoblauch etc, what a fuckin bunch of awesomeness. Also, Luis Sojo:D
Paul O'Neill does hold the MLB record for most smashed water coolers.
The Expos.
And basically, that was the begining of the time when we essentially became the farm team for most every team out there. So many stars playing on so many winning teams. We got pillaged, and we werent allowed to do anything about it. No wonder we stopped giving a shit. |
The Expos
Definately forgot that 4/5ths of the Yanks '99 rotation had ERAs above 4 |
The Expos were barred from the draft? I wasn't aware of that. I seem to remember the Expos not getting 1 major league player out of 8 first round picks in 1997, making Josh McKinley who never made it past AA ball the 11th overall pick of 1998, trading Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips for an expensive pitcher that played just a half-season for them. I also recall giving Milton Bradley to the Indians, and being able to pry only scrub relievers from the Red Sox for their star player, Cliff Floyd. Were these moves the fault of those big bad high payroll teams?
Small market teams won before and they'll win again. Not with idiotic front office moves, which the Expos were full of in their last 7 years of existence. |
I dont recall Floyd ever being our star player.
Also, I'd just like to state that this team could fuck both of these teams up rather easily:
C - Gary Carter 24/105/.255 1B - Keith Hernandez 13/83/.310 2B - Wally Backman 1/27/.320 38 - Ray Knight 11/76/.298 SS - Rafael Santana 1/28/.218 LF - Mookie Wilson 9/45/.289 CF - Lenny Dykstra 8/45/.295 RF - Darryl Strawberry 27/93/.259 SP - Dwight Gooden 17-6/2.84 SP - Ron Darling 15-6/2.81 SP - Bobby Ojeda 18-5/2.57 SP - Sid Fernandez 16-6/3.52 SP - Rick Aguilera 10-7/3.88 LH CL - Jesse Orosco 8-6/21/2.33 RH CL - Roger McDowell 14-9/22/3.02 RP - Doug Sisk 4-2/1/3.06 RP - Rick Anderson 2-1/1/2.72 RP - Randy Niemann 2-3/0/3.79 .....guess who :shifty: |

The Miz, you forgot about the Expos trading Jason Bay for Lou Collier. Whoops
They also drafted Mark McGwire but couldn't sign him. |
I thought McGwire had intended to go USC the whole time. Was there a signing issue?
yeah you're probably right
You know, as bad as the Expos front office has been, getting Pedro for Delino DeShields was one of the biggest steals of the 90s.
Don't underestimate the Dodgers ability to out dumb anyone

Shame the strike screwed out the Expos one good chance to win the division and make the playoffs. Saved Atlanta's streak, until this year at least ;) But Jeter, O'Neill, Bernie in his prime, and a better pitching staff makes this Yanks team a lot better. The ring doesn't hurt either. FWIW, whatifsports.com (greatest website ever) has the Yanks winning 5-1 http://whatifsports.com/mlb/boxscore...=28350665&ad=1. |

I did it and Montreal won 5-3 |

BTW my vote goes to the 1994 Expos, that team was destined for glory. My interest in baseball died with the Expos, (MLB did everything they could to ensure the Expos got fucked over time and time again) |
Yankees because they have Mariano. Plain and simple.
This is the best team ever:
95-67 C Pat Borders .254 1B John Olerud .363 2B Roberto Alomar .326 3B Ed Sprague .260 SS Tony Fernandez .306 LF Joe Carter .254 CF Devon White .273 RF Rickey Henderson .289 DH Paul Molitor .332 SP Juan Guzman 14-3, 2.99 SP Pat Hentgen 19-9, 2.87 SP Jack Morris 7-12, 6.19 SP Dave Stewart 12-8, 4.44 SP Todd Stottlemyre 11-12, 4.84 RP Tony Castillo 3-2, 3.38 RP Danny Cox 7-6, 3.12 RP Mark Eichhorn 3-1, 2.72 RP Mike Timlin 4-2, 4.69 RP Woody Williams 3-1, 4.38 CL Duane Ward 2-3, 2.13, 45 sv '93 Blue Jays baby! |
Guys I'm sorry, but the 99 yankees were one of the greatest teams to ever be assembled..this coming from a met fan
99 YANKEES OF COURSE!
Quote:
Even with the short 1994 season, the Expos have a better team AVG and ERA. Yankees: .284/3.99 Expos: .291/3.35 |
But if they played each other and both teams were as good as they were at each time the Yankees would win.
Team BA should not be used in this (or any) debate between two teams. Especially when they played in different leagues 5 years apart.
Expos 585 runs/114 games = 5.13 runs Yanks 900 runs/162 games = 5.56 runs Expos .775 team OPS, league-adjusted OPS 108, league-adjusted ERA 118 Yanks .817 team OPS, league-adjusted OPS 117, league-adjusted ERA 108 Expos probably had better pitching but the hitting is uncomparable. |
