The Madden Curse: Are you a believer?

Now most of us that are NFL fans are familiar with the Madden Curse and what it is. For those that do not, here's an explanation from Wikipedia:

People started noticing a pattern with St. Louis Rams' halfback Marshall Faulk from the fallout of a Super Bowl-winning season, and great season statistics earned a cover spot. The following year his stats dropped sharply compared to his prior season. Also the Atlanta Falcons' star player, quarterback Michael Vick, was injured during the 2003 preseason after posing for the cover of Madden 2004. Vick suffered a broken fibula in a preseason game against Baltimore, the day after Madden 2004 was released to retailers. The injury resulted in a painful 5-11 year for Vick's team. Although people who believe in the curse state that the featured player will wind up having a weak or injury-prone season

Now for those that don't know who and what, here's a link in picture to an AOL feature on the Madden Curse

So the question, believer or not?

I never used to be, but with every cover athlete getting hurt, I find it hard to believe there's only coincidence to it, its just too many people over too long a span of time, though I have no idea why, it just seems like there's something to it especially now with Alexander being hurt, since the guy has never missed a game in his career to injury or his wife's childbirth up to this point in his career

RoXer 09-26-2006 01:09 AM

Untill it's proven wrong...

DrA 09-26-2006 01:11 AM

Yeah, although for a couple of them (Eddie George, Ray Lewis) it just looked like they were looking for something wrong. "Ray Lewis was too injured to play in the Pro Bowl." Come on.

dablackguy 09-26-2006 01:12 AM

Incidentally, Ray Lewis got hurt the year after and missed a bunch of games, that would've been more valid thatn too hurt to play in the pro bowl, no one wants to play in the pro bowl lol

With Eddie, he was just awful the season after and beyond, that too would've been more valid than a postseason fumble

The Miz 09-26-2006 01:13 AM

Yeah dude there's a magic curse that curses players after they are on the cover of a video game. Yeah man.

UmbrellaCorporation 09-26-2006 01:13 AM

Yeah, I do. I didn't until after this Alexander thing. It's seriously changed my mind.

samichna 09-26-2006 01:15 AM

A believer in coincidence? I used to have the same position you did, but seriously, there's no way that coincidentally that all these guys have gotten hurt or had shit years after being on the cover of Madden. How would you explain it?

It can be psychological, and how you think subconscious is how you portray yourself in a sport.

Curses aren't real although I would like to point out that Shaun Alexander's running style has not changed much since his college days.

It's pretty fucked up none the less.

Fryza 09-26-2006 01:10 PM

I'd say no. What happens is people just pay more attention to the players, and thus putting more pressure on them. They make a mistake or get injured, and people immediately jump at it as 'The Madden Curse!'.

Just superstition that people get carried away with.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 09-29-2006 11:29 AM

I dunno, I wouldn't wanna be on the cover though.
