What do I need to get a laptop onto the Internet?

well, you would need a wireless router to send the laptop the signal, assuming your laptop is wifi ready. if not, then you need a wireless pcmcia card.

What G said, otherwise it's the same as your standard tower pc: ethernet port or dialup modem.

What if I don't have an Internet connection? Is it possible to get online with out one? (I'm assuming no.)

You can go to hotspots or Wi-Fi areas if you don't have a connection.

You could probably ride on other peoples connection in the area with a wireless router..

If your laptop has a wireless card, it will pick up wireless networks in the area. You can connect to them, though nowadays a lot of wireless connections require a password or some sort of source code the first time you connect to the network to prevent people from stealing the signal. My Verizon DSL is protected, no one can steal my shit.

People can still steal your shit, they just have to put in a little work first.

I know people have gotten fined for stealing internet via WiFi.. But anyone who is dumb enough to go after you probably wouldn't be able to tell you are leaching their connection anyway (unless you print out stuff on their printer, or something.) Just don't do it to like a business, the articles I've read about people getting caught were almost always when they were leaching off of a business' office internet.
