Why do two movies with virtually the same plot always come out around the same time?

Knocked Up and Juno

Volcano and Dante's Peak

The Truman Show and EdTV

Armageddon and Deep Impact

This is fun, come up with more.

NeanderCarl 02-04-2008 09:30 PM

Back to the Future and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure... okay, they were a few years apart, but still...

NeanderCarl 02-04-2008 09:32 PM

Hows about 16 Blocks, and at least the first half of Die Hard 4? Now they even had the same actor in the same role!

NeanderCarl 02-04-2008 09:34 PM

Antz and A Bug's Life

NeanderCarl 02-04-2008 09:35 PM

Turner & Hooch and K-9

NeanderCarl 02-04-2008 09:35 PM

Braveheart and Rob Roy

NeanderCarl 02-04-2008 09:38 PM

ahhhh Wyatt Earp and Tombstone

Juan 02-04-2008 09:39 PM

How about all the shitty "scary" movies that come out, like The Eye.

NeanderCarl 02-04-2008 09:44 PM

The Cave and The Descent

NeanderCarl 02-04-2008 09:45 PM

The Illusionist and Magicians (even though, as I understand it, one was drama, the other a comedy... I really ought to check out Magicians too, Mitchell and Webb are amazing)

Boondock Saint 02-04-2008 09:48 PM

Never heard of Magicians, but The Prestige came out shortly after The Illusionist.

What do Juno and Knocked Up have in common other than a character being pregnant.

Blitz 02-05-2008 01:22 AM

27 Dresses and Cloverfield.

Since they both have female characters.

American History X and Pi

Jura 02-05-2008 01:49 AM

I read or watched something about this on TV. And usually they make a lot of money this way. Maybe to give an alternative or something.

Finding Nemo/Shark Tale

Spiderman/Superman Returns :shifty:

ct2k 02-05-2008 06:26 AM

Wyatt Earp and Tombstone is the most obvious to come to mind

Also Goodfellas and Godfather Part III, absolutely different takes on the mafia story but still

Same story... woman becomes unwittingly pregnant, and is then followed through to the birth.

One tells the male perspective, the other tells the womans.

.44 Magdalene 02-05-2008 01:07 PM

Jurassic Park and Carnosaur

Dante's Peak and Volcano

Rush Hour and Knock Off

Transformers and Transmorphers

Blade III and Vampirez

I can expand this list exponentially next time I go to Blockbuster.

.44 Magdalene 02-05-2008 01:10 PM

Also, Pixar / Dreamworks are the worst for this shit, since they seem to do it entirely on purpose. Shark's Tale / Finding Nemo, Madagascar / The Wild, Antz / Bug's Life... and sometimes you'll get some random third party CGI movie jumping in the mix, like Happily N'ever After, Over the Hedge and Surf's Up.

BigDaddyCool 02-05-2008 02:55 PM

Happy Feet/March of the Penguins

Billy Madison/Forest Gump

You missed Flushed Away/Ratatouille

The Wild wasn't Pixar, it was Disney.

And out of all those movies you mentioned, the Pixar one is always far superior, and always had their movie in productions before Dreamworks. This is because Pixar is the best animation studio on the planet.

Other than that most basic plot outline, they're 2 very different films, in tone, performance, humour, characters, etc..

ct2k 02-05-2008 05:05 PM

I enjoyed Surfs Up:$

It's not markish, it's the truth, every film they have done (with the possible exception of A Bugs Life) has been outstanding.

So are most of the others mentioned. There's no denying that two "woman becomes unexpectedly pregnant, we follow how this affects her life, future and relationship with the father as the main plot point of a comedy" movies, released just months apart, calls for a comparison of this nature.

Toy Story > Monsters Inc > Finding Nemo > The Incredibles > Ratatouille > Cars > Toy Story 2 > A Bugs Life

Wall.E is out in June/July and it looks amazing.
I am a HUGE Pixar fan.
