what would you rank as important music cities?

for instance seattle gives you hendrix, nirvana, alice in chains and most of the grunge bands. manchester gives you joy division, new order, the smith, oasis and all. i was wondering which other cities would shoot up on the radar and why?

Kapoutman 04-01-2008 12:23 AM

With the music I listen to, I would have no choice but to include Marseille, France, since they have IAM and their members, Fonky Family, Faf Larage and other artists I really like.

I would also place Los Angeles there with way too many bands to name.

ron the dial 04-01-2008 02:15 AM

chicago simply for the blues, if not some of the more modern stuff.

Ninti the Mad 04-01-2008 02:24 AM

austin for its mesh of musical tastes

Bad Company 04-01-2008 06:35 AM

Indifferent Clox 04-01-2008 07:47 PM

Cleveland, TN

mitchables 04-01-2008 08:47 PM

Omaha, Nebraska - the "Omaha sound" (Cursive, Bright Eyes, Criteria, Tilly and the Wall, formerly Rilo Kiley, etc)

Athens, Georgia - the Elephant 6 bands and other notable indie musicians (Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples In Stereo, Of Montreal, etc)

Long Island, New York (I'm not certain whether Long Island is a suburb, a separate city, or what but whatever - the area is significant) - numerous indie and post-hardcore bands (The Movielife, Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, Straylight Run, Nightmare of You, Glassjaw, Head Automatica, Bayside, As Tall as Lions, etc)

For Australia, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney really (in that order). A couple of good artists have come out of Brisbane or even further north or whatever, but it's the exception rather than the rule.

Indifferent Clox 04-01-2008 10:40 PM

of course omaha and athens. But cleveland has the most potential. Forever.

ron the dial 04-02-2008 12:51 AM

how is everyone overlooking chicago? that blues/jazz shit was sooooooo influential on rock and roll.

LA - For west coast rap, post punk and post hardcore. Seattle for obvious reasons. Manchester because its the greatest music city in the world. New York for Punk and OS rap.

London as well, because A good example of every big genre in the last 40 years has come out of the Big Smoke. Not to mention just how many decent live venues there are within.

BCWWF 04-09-2008 12:21 PM

Right now everything good in rock is coming out of England, though all different cities.

BigDaddyCool 04-10-2008 11:58 AM

Kansas City, we fucking invented Jazz, and that music is made by the devil himself.

Bollocks.

RGWhat316 04-10-2008 03:51 PM

Chicago area has been good lately for more modern rock bands like Disturbed, Chevelle, and Mudvayne.

There really isn't much good rock out at all right now, but the bands that are good are English — Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Editors, Coldplay, Bloc Party, The Kooks, The Cribs, Klaxons, Jack Penate, Frattellis, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Maccabes, Morning Runner, Cajun Dance Party, Maximo Park, and that's not even mentioning the bigger bands like Radiohead, Keane, Blur, Gorillaz, etc. etc.

That's not to forget: Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, David Bowie, The Cure, Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac, The Kinks, Peter Gabriel, The Police, Sex Pistols, Oasis, Elton John, Def Leppard etc.

England has always had the best music, hands down.

With the exception, somewhat, of Muse, my original answer of, "Bollocks," still applies.

But rock does seem to have a lack of good bands at the mo.

Indifferent Clox 04-11-2008 01:54 PM

there's a lot of good music out moreso than ever in my opinion, because there's so much to choose from, there's just not a lot of good mainstream or popular shit.

However, England would like to apologise for Phil Collins

Sorry
