"A Disk error has occured"

i started up my comp the other day worked fine, tryed to boot yesterday and i got a "A disk error has occured. Press ctr alt del to restart".

done abit of searchin and i keep getting different opinions on what to do.

i booted my xp disk and tryed to delete the current partition and it gives me the message "unable to delete partition".

There is something wrong with the hard drive.

any ideas on what to do

Don't delete the partition, you'll lose your data.
Do a repair off the XP CD, you may need to fix the boot sector as well.

Get gparted, burn it to a CD and boot with it; good for partition management creation and deletion. And you can format from there too.

Partition Magic is good too.

If you run checkdisk through windows repair and you have bad sectors, it will try to repair them. I just had this happen with Vista though and pretty much learned (from alot of trial and error/research online) that once you start getting bad sectors it is inevitable that you'll eventually need to get a new HDD. Just installed mine yesterday and now I have 1.25 TB of HDD space. Infinite porno downloads, ftw.
