Best of British?

Who do you think is the best British bands out there right now?

The Mask 03-22-2004 01:04 AM

probably radiohead. We're fu</>cking awful for bands right now.

Funky Fly 03-22-2004 01:09 AM

The Beatles.

And just about every British metal band.

Yes we do. Hence why I'm asking this

When Dizzee Rascal is the top my list now, I think we are in trouble.

My personal favourite is Capdown.

Cactus Sid 03-22-2004 07:18 AM

Right now, Muse and Radiohead

El Capitano Gatisto 03-22-2004 07:50 AM

Radiohead are one of the best bands around, never mind being British.

The Super Furry Animals don't get nearly the credit they deserve for being great. They get excellent critical acclaim, but never seem to get any kind of awards, even the "cool" ones or get hyped by those shitty magazines like Q and NME. Their most recent album was probably my favourite from last year.

The Coral are great too, but maybe a bit of an acquired taste. They're younger than me but they've already got two albums and an EP out, with another album on the way later this year. Crazy bastards.

I like the Darkness, but they're beginning to annoy me, mainly because they feel they have earned the right to insult bands with proven staying power like Oasis and Radiohead. I wouldn't might seeing them fall flat on their faces with their next album, as much as I like the first.

The Libertines are a pretty good band that I haven't really got into yet. One of my chums plays their "Up the Bracket" album now and then, and its great. I've been meaning to get it myself. Plus, one of their singers is a piss-artist drug-fiend, which is always good. We need more of those.

Gomez have a new album coming out in the next few months, which will hopefully live up to their first couple of efforts. I like all their albums, myself, but for some reason their last one got a bit of a mixed reception, leaning towards the bad. It was a bit silly, but had some good catchy songs on it. Anyway, if they produce something as good as "Bring It On" we'll be talking album of the year.

The Cooper Temple Clause's album from 2002 is one of my favourites of all time and never really got the credit it deserved for being one of the most genuinely innovative and different debut albums from a major new British band in recent years. Pity their second effort, released last summer, was kind of dull except for one or two great songs. I don't know if they're working on another release, I'm worried that maybe their first album is as good as they are ever going to get.

Ash have an album out soon too. I'm not a huge fan of Ash, especially their last album with that bollocks song "Candy" on it, but at least they're a very young band with a bright future, as well as a substantial backl catalogue for a bunch in their early 20s.

Franz Ferdinand are getting hyped up alot as the big thing this year, and their debut album is pretty good. It's probably only a matter of time before "Take Me Out" gets extremely annoying, but it is a great single. The rest of the album is good too, crazy retro rock mixed with 80s disco bass lines and beats. Going to see them in a few weeks in Dublin.

Another band that are supposedly going to be big this year are Razorlight, chums of the Libertines. I've downloaded a few of their live songs, and they are very good. Catchy punk type stuff, looking forward to the album whenever the fu</>ck it is coming out.

Ed Harcourt is a pretty good British solo artist, got a couple of really good albums, especially his second effort from last year.

There are bound to be loads more good bands, they just don't get the attention they deserve.

I'd say there's loads but it depends on your taste

Muse
Radiohead
Coomper Temple Clause
Hundred Reasons
Ash
Feeder
Lostprophets
Funeral For A Friend
Gomez (ECG was right)
Placebo
Garbage - earlier stuff is alot better
Blur
Travis - but I'm not a big fan of there last album
Coldplay
Manics (anyone know when threre releasing anything new)

The Mask 03-22-2004 08:16 AM

the only ones i'd rate out of that are radiohead and muse. garbage aren't bad but nothing incredibly special. travis and coldplay are the typical strummy singalong bollocks we're getting all the time now.

Danny Electric 03-22-2004 08:22 AM

I think ECG was right when he said that there's loads that don't get the attention they deserve.
You get so many decent bands playing small venues, who will never get noticed but are amazing.
I love watching unsigned bands too and there's loads of good ones out there but it's so hard to break through or get that record deal.

The Mask 03-22-2004 08:31 AM

I think there's just a general lack of hard rock bands here anymore. I haven't heard any albums in the past few years I've found memorable. It's kinda sad how we went from the likes of led zep, black sabbath and sex pistols to shit like travis and coldplay.

I'm not much of a hard rock band but it's a shame that alot of the best bands in the past came out of Britain.
With the 60's you had the Beatles, the 70's black sabbath, sex pistols etc, the eighties duran duran etc.
But I still feel we have a strong music scene but it doesn't get the attention it deserves.
The only band that ever seems to get any coverage is the shitty Darkness.

Sin Harvest 03-22-2004 08:38 AM

Queen, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath etc.

The Mask 03-22-2004 08:39 AM

I don't know. Nothing I've heard has stood out from the crowd for me. We have like the beatles and the stones... hendrix made it big over here first, pistols, led zep, sabbath, queen, the cure, joy division, tears for fears, all stuff like that that kind of stood out. Everything today seems terribly bland by comparison.

The Mask 03-22-2004 08:40 AM

pink floyd too :shifty:

Danny Electric 03-22-2004 08:46 AM

But probably we're living the past, saying about all these bands who were massive around the world.
Maybe there should be more concentrartion on what we have at the moment and try to make that better.
The music scene has changed to more of a pop culture and so it's harder for these bands to establish themselves.
I don't know, maybe I'm talking crap.

The Mask 03-22-2004 08:50 AM

Well yeah, but how do we make it better? I don't want to propel bands like Travis to a world stage cause I'd for Americans to get influenced by it and then have them churning out horribly bland crap as well.

I plan to perform a complete overhaul anyway, complete with boyband slayings on TOTP

Lol, my old best mate from school was on TOTP on Friday as one of the dancers, he goes to London School of Dance or something.

The Mask 03-22-2004 09:00 AM

oh christ. does he have no shame?

Lol, he's a great dancer, doing alright for himself.
I wouldn't be able to do it though.

Mike the Metal Ed 03-22-2004 09:08 AM

Iron Maiden, Muse and The Darkness

The Destroyer 03-22-2004 09:20 AM

I'd probably have to agree with Muse. Mainly since all our old great bands that are still going (well, the ones I like, anyway) aren't really as good as they once were.

At least we're out of that phase in the 90s where all we seemed to produce were bland and boring indie acts...

Silent 03-22-2004 09:58 AM

I like the Darkness. Also, basically everything Gary Husband (British drummer) has done, like Level 42.

Not to get in to comparisons, or anything. Radiohead are extremely underrated, if anything, because people usually tend to hate them because of their knob end hardcore fans, or because they ditched the formulaic Britpop sound. I know I used to (because of knob end fans I knew).

The Duck 03-23-2004 01:22 PM

Darkness and Coldplay for me.

And maybe it's just how I hear people talk about them and how I hear people talk about Rage. Just the place where I live, I guess.</font> :-\

Well, I don't know what the formulaic Britpop sound is, but I think Radiohead is shit. The guy is a horrible singer, in my opinion. And they just bore me..

Manufactured British sh</>it pop music. Spice Girls?

We have so many that it's not funny. Kelly Clarkson won American Idol right? She has some form of credibility (to me anyways and not just of her looks). The only person with anything resembling credibility coming from the British Pop Idol series is a guy who came third in the first singles series who previously made a total tit of himself in the group series making himself the nations laughing stock.

Ok to be fair, Girls Aloud (well they are hot) are ok in my book but it's still Britpop
