Little things that annoy you in games.

I downloaded Sonic 1 on my 360 and I've been playing it between sessions of Fable II. The games great and has always been one of my favourites but there is one thing that has always, always annoyed me.
Namely, the speed shoe. Maybe it's just me but I hate it that SEGA put that power up in areas full of enemies and obstacles. I fail to see where you gain the advantage in those areas.
I get higher speed so I'm faster and have less time to react yet they decide to put more enemies and obstacles in my way so I have more to avoid at a faster pace.
Yeah its awesome when you are going fast and managing to avoid everything but still, it sort of takes away from the power up. Shouldn't areas with the speed shoe be full of loops and hills and stuff so we can actually enjoy the maximum speed of Sonic?

Does anyone have their own gripe? Big or small.

Allied AI. I've been playing a lot of Saints Row 2: Fight For Stilwater, and I'm thinking it's been years since we've had AI teammates, and we still can't make one that's smart enough to not light me on fire, run between me and the guy I'm shooting, or manage to not pin me in a corner?

El Fangel 11-11-2008 12:34 AM

How 95% of shooters is just you against thousands.

Blitz 11-11-2008 12:51 AM

In any of the Koei Warriors games, when you need to escort an ally somewhere and their AI is programmed not actually run towards wherever they need to go until EVERY LAST FUCKING ENEMY THEY COME WITHIN 12 MILES OF IS DEAD.

U-Warrior 11-11-2008 12:57 AM

Not being able to skip cut scenes. Particularly if you have to watch it again, after you die.

Boomer 11-11-2008 12:58 AM

I could probably list a lifetime worth of these if I wanted to.

My first would be online glitchers. I understand that some people might find it fun, but I am frequently amazed by how many people use glitches to their advantage to ruin the game for everyone who doesn't use the same glitch.

Yeah, dogmeat didn't last too long for me in Fallout 3.

Just reminded me.

Last night I was playing WoW and you go an escort quest where you make sure someone doesnt die along the way.

You have to take them to Point Z from Point A

However if you are walking along and the person is at Point F and your at Point J clearing the way, they will run to point J to help and after the monster is dead will run back to Point F to continue walking.

So fucking annoying.

.44 Magdalene 11-11-2008 02:26 AM

Empty barrels or crates everywhere

Escort missions

Bad cel shading

In-game phone calls

XBox 360 text being too small on a standard def TV

Features or powers that don't actually do anything outside of one fight or one level

Fighting games that don't have enough unlockables

Not being able to hop a knee-high pile of debris

Not being able to enter a door because "the lock's broken" or it's "stuck fast"

Invincible enemies in a game that normally lets you kill the enemies

Invincible enemies that you're obligated to fight for some reason

First person shooters where I'm a floating, disembodied head with a telekinetically hovering gun right under my chin

.44 Magdalene 11-11-2008 02:27 AM

Hero sequences in a game that doesn't need them and don't really make sense in context either

Lookin' at you, Web of Shadows.

Kalyx triaD 11-11-2008 07:23 AM

Online modes with no Guest functionality.

Online modes with no Party System (yes Halo 2 innovated it, yes is standard, get over it and implement it arrogant fucks).

Pfft, online modes with no lobby (c'mon now).

Bad controls, I have no sympathy for this.

Licensed games based on properties that practically write themselves gameplay wise, but a developer still fucks it up.

Obnoxious post boot-up company logos (a 7 second vid just telling me Neversoft had something to do with the game? Seriously?).

Need For Speed. Stop it.

El Fangel 11-11-2008 07:28 AM

Sports games with more realistic looking characters. Seriously NHL 96 was the best game ever get over it.

Oh yeah, that's fucking annoying. Especially when there is an unsealable gate between point a and point B. There were three or four of these in SW and again in SW2.

Yeah, unskippable cut scenes should be a war crime.

They wouldn't be so bad if the AI wasn't always so motherfucking painful.

There's NO excuse for this.

Quote:

Especially in destructable environments. You mean I can blow up skyscrapers but a locked door is too much for me? Six inches of debris can't be bested?

On a side note, keys/fetch quests in a game where there's no reason you can't simply breach the door with a shotgun or similar. I can blow up cars, but I need to find a key to unlock a door?

Enemies that can only be killed by one counterintuitive fashion, by metagaming, or in a way that will only ever be usable just this once for some reason.

Fox 11-11-2008 11:31 AM

Considering I really only play Halo 3, I'll say little kids screaming "VETO!" at the top of their lungs, even after the map has been vetoed.

Also, in the old 2d side scroller beat 'em ups, I hated it when you were in the middle of a combo on one guy, and another enemy just walks up behind you and starts punching you in the back. Cheap bullshit. Some of the games fixed this problem, but it occurs frequently in others.

Kane Knight 11-11-2008 11:43 AM

Anyone ever play the original Hunter: The Reckoning game? The escort AI for this little girl in a cemetary was terrible. She was terrified of the evil undead thingies, but she'd run right at them. Usually while you were being clusterfucked on the other side of the screen.

"To be continued" endings. It's not an ending if it doesn't actually end. I'm fine with games which leave a sequel open, but games which have limited or no resolution piss me off.

BigDaddyCool 11-11-2008 12:22 PM

Lava levels.

BigDaddyCool 11-11-2008 12:26 PM

Unbalanced weapons.

I love Halo 3, but I can go on forever about how the community is utter shit.

BigDaddyCool 11-11-2008 12:31 PM

I've never really played online games much...or atleast with other people.

I got a copy of Farcry and couldn't even play it cause of that long ass cutscene before you even get to the main menu..

BigDaddyCool 11-11-2008 12:46 PM

Not being able to replay what a character just said. Cause you know sometimes someone else in the room is talking or whatever so you just missed an important part of the story.

Kalyx triaD 11-11-2008 12:54 PM

Videogame sites that preview games and make them sound like the second coming, and when review time comes; they pan the very features they were so excited about months prior. I understand an unfinished game can have a positive outlook because it may improve, but I have safely guessed how games will play based on cross studied previews and I'm thinking these journalist should be that much more skilled than me at spotting a dead duck.

Yes times 10

Or the phone rings. Or something similar.

On a related note, I hate how cooperative games like Rock Band disable pausing online. FFS, life goes on. I can understand it when you're in a death match, or even when you're doing score duel in Rock Band, but for fuck's sake....

Kane Knight 11-11-2008 01:12 PM

Nintendo has an online policy?

Nintendo has online?

I know Sony has the "We'll rape you, and if you're very lucky, we'll use a rubber and some lube" policy, but isn't Nintendo still trying to appeal to the Amish market?

More importanly, you died during the mission, so you are out of ammo and armour and need to replace the ammo and armour, or couldn't we just restart with all the states from the beginning of when you started the mission.

BigDaddyCool 11-11-2008 01:17 PM

Oh, and coming across choices in the game that seem like they should effect the long term story, if not the short term story, but they don't. Looking at you Raw v Smackdown 2008.

LoDownM 11-11-2008 01:29 PM

Any Command & Conquer made by EA after Generals.
Adding a 3rd faction to games that where fine with 2(coughc&c3,redalert3cough)
darkpower
Escort missions
Cel shading
Mirrors Edge
Not being able to swim
Shooting somone in the head and they don't die, looking at you call of duty 4
Any Halo games community
Games being labeled other game killers(Halo Killer, WoW Killer, etc)

Hanso Amore 11-11-2008 01:40 PM

When games tout new pointless features but ignore past errors and glitches that ruin the game (Madden Franchise)

I hate when the AI can spot you from a mile away, with their back turned, and you are hiding.

Kalyx triaD 11-11-2008 01:45 PM

Basketball games.

BigDaddyCool 11-11-2008 01:45 PM

Point less running about missions with no enemies really blocking the way.

Wow, I just spent 10 minutes running around the map, didn't fight anyone, barely progressed the story, and didn't get any points or money.

BigDaddyCool 11-11-2008 01:49 PM

Myst. That game was gay.

Vietnamese Crippler 11-11-2008 01:55 PM

Arcade-style car games, Need for Speed in particular, where you get to the end of the game, buy the last unlocked car, and you have no need for it when the previous cars you've bought are already faster and/or better than the final car(s).

BigDaddyCool 11-11-2008 02:00 PM

Speaking of racing games, where you blow up one of your opponets only for them to regnerate.

:y:

I hate "X Killer," especially when it's a shitty knockoff on the "rival" platform (Halo killers on the PS3, Metal Gear killer...Kojima should be called that)

I'm going to toss in: Removing features. The three factions thing reminded me. In the first Samurai Warriors, you have a lot of maps where you have three factions that are actually at odds with one another. In SW2, you may have a couple, but mostly three way battles are more of a 1 on 2 or 2 on 1. I like three way battles. That's a minor deal.

But then, like Smackdown games removing CAW options or GM mode. Those are bigger deals.

Howabout tutorial missions which stretch shit out?

Also, I hate the game industry spending so much money combating the used market and piracy. You hear the new one where one of the guys from Epic wants to charge us for the ending of a game unless we purchased it new? That's especially good for those people who still don't have broadband to get on Live or PSN, since the ending would be DLC even new.

I doubt anything will come of it, but it irks me that combatting piracy eats millions of dollars a year that could go to making games better. Or even--this one will stun you--profit! Piracy isn't going down, the used market isn't going away, and spending money on it means you have less money to spend on the games or horde. Motherfuckers.

Boomer 11-11-2008 05:17 PM

I was pretty floored when Metroid Prime 3 had no multiplayer when Metroid 2 had it. I don't care if it sucked or not (it did), how can you just remove it? At least attempt to make it better, even if it means a few tweaks and two new game modes.

LoDownM 11-11-2008 05:27 PM

Yeah, removing features and taking things out really annoy me. Kinda why I don't want to get Dynasty Warriors 6, only a handful of characters have a story and some characters share movesets AND less characters. wtf, really? So the PS3 is more powerful then the PS2 and Xbox, but yet the first next gen DW game has less diversity?

There's other reason's I don't want DW6, but those are more to do with being a die hard Three Kingdoms era fan.

Or reversely they give you a quick tutorial mission, then toss you straight into a really hard level. I seem to remember a lot of old NES games would do that.

Funky Fly 11-11-2008 07:19 PM

Aside from everything that was mentioned, I'll say blatant glitches or glaring issues that could be resolved with patching that don't get it.

How many big budget games have some glaring issue that could be fixed via patch that never do? Pisses me off to no end.

Savio 11-11-2008 07:29 PM
