Bob Dylan is the man

it had to be said

Seriously though he rules. Like his songs are all great and he's one of the best lyric writers ever. If you ever doubt his lyric skills listen to or read "Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie." Its a poem and it is sweet

I think everyone should talk about Bob Dylan and how he is more the man than you

samichna 03-25-2004 12:11 AM

He is definitely the man.

Bazooka 03-25-2004 12:17 AM

This is not an insult to Bob Dylan, but in his songs he just strings random words together that don't make any sense together

Champion of Europa 03-25-2004 12:58 AM

Yeah, I have tons of his stuff.

StrongMad 03-25-2004 01:15 AM

He is possibly the greatest lyricist of all time. His lyrics..... yeah. wow.

The Outlaw 03-25-2004 04:23 AM

I agree with what Supreme said.

Also, all you have to do to see his awesomeness is to try to count how many songs of his have been covered and how many people have covered them. :y:

Boondock Saint 03-25-2004 04:40 AM

I enjoy

i agree brilliant song writer, it's like poetry set to music. one of my all time faves, more people need to check him out.

DegenerationY 03-25-2004 01:07 PM

He's the most amazing poet to listen to.

I have this book at my house in SF, which is a collection of a bunch of poems he wrote that were never turned into songs. Once I remember the title of it, i'll let you all know.

Whoever said it's a string of words that doesn't make sense needs to really listen next time. Listen to more than Everybody Must Get Stone and Like a Rolling Stone. There is much better stuff out there by him.

DegenerationY 03-25-2004 01:11 PM

tell me these are random words strung together:

"Idiot Wind"

Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press
Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out quick but when they will I can only guess
They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy
She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me
I can't help it if I'm lucky.

People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act
Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts
Even you yesterday you had to ask me where it was at
I couldn't believe after all these years you didn't know even me better than that
Sweet lady.

Idiot wind blowing every time your move your mouth
Blowing down the backroads heading south
Idiot wind blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot babe
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe

I ran into the fortune-teller who said beware of lightning that might strike
I haven't known peace and quit for so long I can't remember what it's like
There's a lone soldier on the cross smoke pouring out of a boxcar door
You didn't know it you didn't think it could be done in the final end he won the wars
After losing every battle.

I woke up on the roadside daydreaming about the way things sometimes are
Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are making me see stars
You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies
One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes
Blood on your saddle.

Idiot wind blowing through the flowers on your tomb
Blowing through the curtains in your room
Idiot wind blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot babe
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart
You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to change my heart
Now everything's a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped
What's good is bad what's bad is good you'll find out when you reach the top
You're on the bottom.I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind
I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed your eyes don't look
into mine
The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone faced while the
building burned
I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees while the
springtime turned
Slowly into autumn.

Idiot wind blowing like a circle around my skull
From the Grand Coulee Dam to Capitol
Idiot wind blowing every time you move you teeth
You're an idiot babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've read
Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishing I was somebody else instead
Down the highway down the tracks down the road to ecstasy
I followed you beneath the stars hounded by your memory
And all you raging glory.

I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free
I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me
You'll never know the hurt I suffered not the pain I raise above
And I'll never know the same about you your holiness or your kind of love
And it makes me feel so sorry.

Idiot wind blowing through the buttons of our coats
Blowing through the letters that we wrote
Idiot wind blowing through the dust upon our shelves
We're idiots babe
It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves.

"Let Me Die"

I will not go down under the ground
"Cause somebody tells me that death's comin' 'round
An' I will not carry myself down to die
When I go to my grave my head will be high,
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

There's been rumors of war and wars that have been
The meaning of the life has been lost in the wind
And some people thinkin' that the end is close by
"Stead of learnin' to live they are learning to die.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

I don't know if I'm smart but I think I can see
When someone is pullin' the wool over me
And if this war comes and death's all around
Let me die on this land 'fore I die underground.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

There's always been people that have to cause fear
They've been talking of the war now for many long years
I have read all their statements and I've not said a word
But now Lawd God, let my poor voice be heard.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

If I had rubies and riches and crowns
I'd buy the whole world and change things around
I'd throw all the guns and the tanks in the sea
For they are mistakes of a past history.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

Let me drink from the waters where the mountain streams flood
Let me smell of wildflowers flow free through my blood
Let me sleep in your meadows with the green grassy leaves
Let me walk down the highway with my brother in peace.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

Go out in your country where the land meets the sun
See the craters and the canyons where the waterfalls run
Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho
Let every state in this union seep in your souls.
And you'll die in your footsteps
Before you go down under the ground.

Champion of Europa 03-25-2004 05:14 PM

I think Tangled Up In Blue is one of the finest songs ever written.

Like a Rolling Stone, Rainy Day Women #12 and 35, Blowin' in the Wind, and All Along the Watchtower are ESSENTIAL songs for any contemporary music fan.

el fregadero 03-26-2004 03:12 AM

Hendrix's version of All Along The Watchtower is better. :o

Bazooka 03-26-2004 04:02 AM

What's that one song where he strings together words that are completly random? In the music video all these people are holding up signs of the word that he sings

el fregadero 03-26-2004 04:03 AM

Perhaps you are thinking of the Weird Al video called "Bob". :shifty:

Bazooka 03-26-2004 04:07 AM

No, I particularly recall this being a Bob Dylan song.

I am just getting into him, I've got some of the basic songs like "Like a Rolling Stone", "Hurricane", and "All Along the Watchtower", but can somebody give me like the essential songs to have? Thanks.

Loose Cannon 09-25-2005 11:08 PM

I like "Times Are Changing"

FakeLaser 09-26-2005 03:10 PM

Yeah Dylan is the man.

Loose Cannon 09-26-2005 11:47 PM

They're playing this 3 part Bob Dylan special where I am on UNC TV. I don't know if people outside of NC get it though.

Buzzkill 09-26-2005 11:57 PM

Corina Corina
Masters of War

Loose Cannon 09-27-2005 12:00 AM

just realized it was the PBS channel. Don't know why it says UNC TV on the bottom.

Anyway, the thing is called "No Direction Home" and part 2 will probably be tomorrow.

PapaGeorgio 09-27-2005 01:24 AM

He came to my college last year. I went to see him simply cause he is Dylan. I mean I am a fan of his music but his vocal skills aren't really great now a days. Still awesome just to see him live.

el fregadero 11-25-2005 07:39 PM

Bumping this 'cause I got The Essential Bob Dylan for Christmas.

Yeah, it's a greatest hits album, but how on Earth can you go wrong with an album that has:

Blowin' In The Wind
Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
The Times They Are A-Changin'
It Ain't Me, Babe
Maggie's Farm
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
Mr. Tambourine Man
Subterranean Homesick Blues
Like A Rolling Stone
Positively 4th Street
Just Like A Woman
Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35
All Along The Watchtower
Quinn The Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)
I'll Be Your Baby Tonight
Lay, Lady, Lay
If Not For You
I Shall Be Released
You Ain't Goin' Nowhere
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Forever Young
Tangled Up In Blue
Shelter From The Storm (my new favorite Dylan song)
Hurricane
Gotta Serve Somebody
Jokerman
Silvio
Everything Is Broken
Not Dark Yet
Things Have Changed

It's just not fair that one man can write that many great songs (okay, so he co-wrote, like, three of the songs, but still).

el fregadero 01-02-2006 03:00 AM

Gotta say Desolation Row is my favorite song of his right now.

Nickel Creek's version of "Tomorrow is a long time" is pretty good... though, can't say I've heard the original.

If he had a beautiful voice he would lose almost all of his appeal to me.

I'm surprised that Masters of War isn't on his Greatest Hits album.

el fregadero 01-02-2006 07:49 PM

I still don't get when people say they can't understand him though, I can understand almost everything he says.

Champion of Europa 01-03-2006 12:39 AM

I got No Direction Home for Christmas. Bob Dylan + Scorcese cannot go wrong.
