Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Vince McMahon is the greatest wrestling promoter of all time.

Discuss.

James Steele 01-18-2009 08:56 PM

TITUS SINCLAIR

Joe Pantoliano

I figured somebody would have mentioned Paul Heyman or Dory Funk Sr.

If you were to say like wrestling mind or something like that. Then yes those would have come up.

But there is clearly only 1 answer here.

This is a pretty silly thread, to be honest.

Antonio Inoki is arguably one of the greatest wrestling promoters of all time. New Japan has existed since 1972 and has won the Wrestling Observer's "Promotion of the Year" 8-times; which is more than any other promotion since the inception of the award in 1983. It is the most dominant promotion in Japan and has run deals with both WCW and WWF in the past.

I still say Vince McMahon, though.

Lock Jaw 01-18-2009 10:07 PM

No. Vince is just a great businessman who bought out all the competition.

Being a great businessman is part and parcel of being a great promoter. The reason Paul Heyman was NOT a great promoter is because he was such a shitty businessman. He was a great talent-finder and booker, but as a promoter, if you can't keep your promotion afloat, then you're not that great.

Vastardikai 01-19-2009 01:10 AM

Anyone who can get people to buy a pay-per-view to see something hatch from an egg is a great promoter.

That is all.

KYR 01-19-2009 01:49 AM

Depends on what you mean by "greatest". [/Narc mode]

If success is your measure then I'd have to agree.

Nobuhiko Takada will be happy to know this.

HUSTLE! HUSTLE!

FourFifty 01-19-2009 02:05 AM

Okay Lock Jaw- If it's not Vince, then who?

BigDaddyCool 01-19-2009 10:07 AM

I believe a better term is most successful promoter of all time.

FourFifty 01-19-2009 10:17 AM

So it's Lock Jaw and Taker707 vs the world on this.... Lock Jaw, do you REALLY want to be on his side?

Xero 01-19-2009 11:04 AM

Shut up Lock Jaw.

I still say Vince McMahon, though.

Ironically, Inoki also nearly drove NJPW into the ground with bad business decisions in the end.

Mostly, I just felt like being contradictory. And if not McMahon, then I say it was the dude who first came up with the idea of having two people fight each other with a scripted finish. That guy was brilliant and changed the face of the industry (even if he was probably a carny). :shifty:

RVDmark 01-19-2009 04:29 PM

Yes he is the greatest wrestling promoter of all time. However in the grand scheme of things its hardly a Nobel prize in terms of achievment. He is next to Kermit the frog on the walk of fame though. :shifty:

You'd think for what he paid for that star he could have gotten a spot by Snap, Crackle and Pop.
