Star Trek Online Looks Pretty Sick

Up on Kotaku right now

Requiem 02-24-2009 01:18 PM

Going to be a dumbed down version of EVE Online. Likely going to suck.

BigDaddyCool 02-24-2009 01:28 PM

Thanks for leaving a link, faggot.

Requiem 02-24-2009 01:30 PM

Their website is down right now, but it's not worth it anyways.

Down or not, I'm adding the link. I hate coming into these threads with nothing to back up anything that is said.

Requiem 02-24-2009 01:36 PM

http://www.eveonline.com/

Ok.

BigDaddyCool 02-24-2009 01:38 PM

I'll so kick your ass.

Requiem 02-24-2009 01:43 PM

Not gonna lie, STO will probably bomb. They've already dropped ship and station interiors, which means it's going to be the same concept as EVE Online, set in Star Trek lore. Except, they're using heavily instanced areas which is stupid. They're basically trying to compete in a genre with a game that has no 'real' new gameplay to offer, and only a popular IP (the star trek IP). It isn't going to be nearly as complex as EVE, and will probably fail to the likes of Jumpgate Evolution and Earthrise, which will be the games that sci-fi fans that don't play EVE will go to.

Edit: I'm probably biased, because I think EVE is one of the most brilliant games -ever-, not just in MMO terms, and I love the company behind it (CCP). But I -am- looking forward to Earthrise, and STO is going to bring nothing new to the table.

BigDaddyCool 02-24-2009 01:49 PM

I'm still kicked your ass. You come up to see Raw march 23rd?

Requiem 02-24-2009 01:52 PM

Not a big wrestling fan.

BigDaddyCool 02-24-2009 01:59 PM

Then why do you come to a wrestling website?

Requiem 02-24-2009 02:01 PM

This is a wrestling website? WTF :foc:

Requiem 02-24-2009 02:02 PM

But nah.. I started posting here because of DS and el freg posting here. I saw DS posting on it one day, and was like "what is that" and he told me, so I made an account and started posting.

Don't think I have ever posted in the wrestling forum before though.

Has there ever been a GOOD star trek game? Honestly, I like the idea of space combat, but....

Was just gonna ask that. Star Trek and all it's spin offs should be ideal for RPGs or even turn-based strategies, but their games always seem to be poo.

Kane Knight 02-25-2009 12:28 AM

I wonder if any of the computer games are worth it. I like the ships more than the stories. I used to have a shitload of the Micro Machine toys, both Star Trek and Star wars. At least with Star Wars, there is Rogue Leader. Doesn't do the tactical or RPG stuff, but it's a kickass starfighter game.

LoDownM 02-25-2009 12:43 AM

Bridge Commander was decent. Has/had a huge mod following that mad it great, lots of graphic improvements and tons of ships.

jcmoorehead 02-25-2009 04:54 AM

Armada and Armada 2 were great RTS games. As mentioned above Bridge Commander was good. Elite Force and Elite Force 2 were damn good FPS games but that seems to be about it really.

As for this, I always thought it would have more in common with Star Wars Galaxies what with you beaming down to planets and the like then Eve?

The problem with STO, is that it's trying to do both right off the bat. It wants ship combat, and ground combat. Honestly, I don't think Cryptic can pull off a feat like this without killing the depth of both. At least, certainly not in a way that can compete with games that are only doing one or the other. But, that's my bias speaking again, because I have nothing but respect for the company CCP. They've done some amazing things over the years, and Perpetual, the company that started STO had a failed game already and massive layoffs over the last couple years before shutting down completely. That's not a good sign for the game's start.

Cryptic has what.. City of Heroes? While successful, it never grabbed my chain. I dunno.. maybe it will be nice, but it's going to have to 'wow' me if it wants more than a half-assed interest.

STO might never even see the light of day.

Maybe we'll get a Masters of Teras Kasi. :shifty:

I said it was on kotaku as in kotaku.com

Requiem 02-26-2009 02:33 AM

Also, looking at some new screenshots, I have to say I'm not impressed with the graphics. They world itself is very 'blocky'. The space graphics look decent, but it's looking very WoWish. Even the new Star Wars MMO so far is more visually appealing than this.

Star Trek Legacy was ok.

Kane Knight 02-26-2009 10:14 AM

I tried Legacy's demo; now that I can get it cheap used, I should. It's not awesome, but....

jcmoorehead 02-26-2009 10:47 AM

Legacy was the one on the 360 right? Yeah that game was awful, couldn't stand it. Personally I think the best formula for a Star Trek game is Armada or Bridge Commander. Would love to see them make a second Bridge Commander game.

Requiem 02-26-2009 01:44 PM

Also, thanks for being a douche and not even discussing your own topic Clox.

Yeah, it was the 360 one.

LoDownM 02-26-2009 05:26 PM

The only good thing about Legacy was all the Captains and Main ships from all the shows.
