How often do you differ from the critics as far as Music is concerned

Justify yourself.

Juan 04-07-2009 04:03 AM

I can choose my music for myself

Hornicane 04-07-2009 04:56 AM

I pretty much don't listen to critics at all. I hate most of the indie shit the critics love, for instance, as I find it to be pretentious and boring. IE, Kings of Leon were nominated for god know how many Grammys. Hate them.

Downunder 04-07-2009 04:57 AM

I don't bother with critics - if I like something, I like it.

Impeccable 04-07-2009 07:52 AM

I'll give anything a try. If I like it, I'll listen to it...if I hate it, I'll turn off the song.

I purchase a few magazines just to see interviews and new releases coming soon, but don't ever read reviews.

OssMan 04-07-2009 09:27 AM

Guru Dave, you are a poor brainwashed soul

ron the dial 04-07-2009 11:45 AM

i'll read reviews, but generally only after i've listened to the album for myself and already have an opinion on it. they don't really influence by opinion in terms of whether i like something or not, but i do use them as a guide to find some new music.

ron the dial 04-07-2009 11:46 AM

sometimes i'll read bad reviews of albums that i really like just so that i can get all worked up about it

DaveWadding 04-07-2009 11:54 AM

Critics are all a bunch of fuckin assholes.

Kings of Leon aren't indie. They are signed to Sony Music ffs. That is like the complete antithesis of being indie.

Anyway. This.

I don't really find myself being influenced by what I've read about an album. I keep it in mind, but I don't let it define my opinion.

I meant more the "indie rock" kind of sound.

indie is not a genre ffs

"Indie rock" is not a particular sound. It is a loose term used to describe independent bands who have predominantly rock-based influences, but that's about where the affiliation stops. Bands such as Cursive, Pinback, Minus the Bear, and Modest Mouse would all be considered "indie rock", but none of them sound anything like each other.

Funky Fly 04-07-2009 09:44 PM

I get my music by word of mouth. Fuck a critic.

GD 04-07-2009 09:55 PM

Rolling Stones rated U2's new album like 4 or 5 stars but I find it very mediocre and boring at times. I do read magazines and do consider their opinions. But I would rather choose my music.

Funky Fly 04-07-2009 10:02 PM

It also doesn't help that my taste in music is so wildly different from most people I know.

GD 04-07-2009 10:05 PM

Absolutely Funky sometimes I refuse to listen to commercial main stream music.

Funky Fly 04-07-2009 10:52 PM

What? All you ever post about is mainstream music.

It's not even about that, my music taste is fucked up because I'm a bit of a musical omnivore, but I'm very discerning about what I listen to at the same time.

*shrugs* That was just my understanding of it from reading things like Rolling Stone and Wikipedia. I don't listen to much of that sort of music so you've probably a better understanding of it than I do.

It was a failed attempt to get along with the masses.

DrA 04-08-2009 02:20 AM

If the critics don't approve, you better believe I won't be buying it.

RP 04-11-2009 10:07 AM

I disagree with everything Rollingstone Magazine reviews. Everything. That magazine has gone so far down hill its not even funny anymore.

Fignuts 04-12-2009 01:22 PM

For something as subjective as music I find critics to a complete waste of time.

Considering how drasticaly people's taste in music can contrast, I find no credibility in any music review.

Completely useless profession, and the fact that people still listen to them enough to keep them around is ridiculous.

They had TV on the Radio as #1 for the year of 2008 and they are not traceable on Billboard. Playing mind games with me.

Gertner 04-12-2009 11:05 PM

Never

PorkSoda 04-12-2009 11:48 PM

I listen for myself. I don't care what people think! I'm a Barbie Girl...in a Barbie World! :nono:

I choose for myself.

The Gold Standard 04-17-2009 11:28 PM

I don't care what anyone says about music, if I like it I will listen to it
