Is age just a number in wrestling?

So I was watching the Batista match from RAW (and a few past Royal Rumbles) and I gotta ask you with Batista being 40, and Flair might be returning is age just a number in wrestling? I was a few early 90's Royal Rumbles and Flair was 43 when he won the title at the 92 Royal Rumble and the next year in 93 Bob Backlund at 44 years old lasted over an hour at the Royal Rumble. DDP was also 43 when he first won the WCW title and went on to wrestle in both WWE and TNA after that. So obviously not everyone can wrestle for years and years, is age just a number in wrestling? When do you think someone like Fliar or DDP hit there prime?

It depends entirely if they can keep up with the current pace of the product.

Clearly the answer to this is 42.

Jeritron 05-21-2009 09:52 PM

I think "tv age" is more important.

Batista may be 40, but his "tv age" is still relatively young, since he's only been featured prominently for a few years.
For example, Shawn and Taker are still great performers and in great shape, but many fans roll their eyes at them still wrestling. Mostly casual fans who don't understand how good they still are, but even diehards who know how good they still are still want them to wind down.
I don't think it's age or physical shape.

Look at HHH. Many will say "this guy's still going?", while referring to Batista as "the WWE's new guy", when in reality they're about the same age.

I've got to go with a hybrid between Xero's answer and Jeritron's answer. TV age certainly helps a guy get perceived as "fresh," which allows them to appear younger than they actually are. Both Batista and Finlay may be older than a lot of the guys out there, but seeing as they have only been on WWE television for a few years, they seem to have a lot more shelf life than they may have had if they had wrestled for the company since their 20's.

But the thing about an old guy wrestling is that they have to do stuff that looks believable. That is what became hard about justifying Ric Flair staying around. The guy looked like hell towards the end of his run, and his match quality dropped. The guy could still bust out the occasion delayed vertical suplex to make it seem like he had strength left in his body, but overall it was hard to buy him beating someone younger than knew what they were doing.

FIGHT AND WRESTLER SAME DIFFERENCE ITS JUST A SHAME TO SEE FLAIR DRAGGED BACK DUE TO THE LACK OF DEPTH ON THE RAW LOCKER ROOM . SORRY BUT THATS MY THOUGHTS I WOULD BE GREATFULL IF YOU COULD SURE YOURS ON FLAIR GETTING ENVOLED IN THE ORTON/BATISTA FEUD, A FEUD WHICH FOR MY MONEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH 2004/2005 THANKS AND KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK ON SMACKDOWN!!!!!

While I am not an advocate of Ric wrestling again, I see no issue with him being utilized in a viable storyline. Fans love Ric and he loves them so having Flair back on TV is a good thing in my view. Using him in moderation and in unique situations will keep the "shine" on him. am not an advocate of Ric wrestling again, I see no issue with him being utilized in a viable storyline. I have a new favourite MMA fighter.

Mr. Nerfect 05-22-2009 10:05 PM

Hate to get this back on topic, but on the concept of "TV age":

D'Lo Brown is actually a year younger than R-Truth, I believe, and is only one year older than MVP. But because of when he entered the WWE, he seems a lot "older" than those guys, who can both hide behind coming into the WWE quite a bit later.
