Homebrew (Wii)

A potentially sensitive subject.

Just got the channel for the Wii and also a back up channel for....well back ups.

Anyone else got the Homebrew channel? What do you use it for?

OssMan 07-11-2009 02:16 PM

I have every NES game, a lot of Super Nintendo games, every Atari 2600 game, a few Genesis games and N64/PSX/Colecovision/a bunch of other emulators on it that either don't work yet or I have no roms for. It is amazing. Pretty much the primary reason I even use my Wii. Played through all of Earthbound using just the Wii Remote and now I'm doing A Link to the Past on it. There is supposed to be a way to play DVDs but I haven't figured out how to work that yet. And a lot of cool things to download from Homebrew Browser.

Dave Youell 07-11-2009 02:18 PM

Yeah, I read that there's a way to make it a dvd player

There's apps where you can use your wii mote as spirit level, why you would ever want that is beyond me. But still pretty cool

OssMan 07-11-2009 02:18 PM

Wii Strobe is the best possible use of the wii

road doggy dogg 07-11-2009 02:20 PM

Never even heard of this. Should probably use my Wii for more than just Guitar Hero and Smash Bros every 4 months prolly.
crossrine

Vietnamese Crippler 07-11-2009 02:22 PM

I only use the Homebrew to play backups.

You can play PSX games on Wii? Pray tell.

All I have is a port of VisualBoyAdvance that I play Fire Pro Wrestling 2 on and Gecko OS to play my NTSC copy of Brawl.

OssMan 07-11-2009 02:25 PM

It's some emulator called WiiSX that probably shouldn't have even been released yet cause it doesn't work. They just updated it like two weeks ago but I don't think it even has an interface yet and my Wii froze when I tried to use it. But you can download ISOs to a folder and it's should be able to play them.

OssMan 07-11-2009 02:25 PM

Also how do you do backups

Vietnamese Crippler 07-11-2009 02:52 PM

I use a soft-mod called Softmii.

Download the install programs, put them on an SD card, put it in your Wii, and follow the instructions.

Dave Youell 07-11-2009 03:49 PM

I got some shit that actually gives me a channel for back ups so I don't have to run stuff through an sd card.

Vietnamese Crippler 07-11-2009 09:26 PM

The SD card is just for installing the necessary hacks.

Once it's installed, you don't need the SD card anymore. I can put in any backup and select it from the disc channel.

That simple? I don't need to order anything else? Fuck, I should do this. How are Wii updates with this?

Vietnamese Crippler 07-11-2009 09:45 PM

It is that simple, but you can't update the Wii immediately until there's an OK from the soft mod developers because update might mess up the hack. But I haven't found a need to update my 3.2 firmware because I don't use WiiWare/VC/Wii Store anyway.

You can find the instructions and judge for yourself whether it's easy or not. Just search for "softmii" on Demonoid or wherever.

G 07-11-2009 10:23 PM

Yeah I downloaded some directions, and apparently I need to do everything from the ground up like the Twilight hack. I dunno, seems overwhelming. How are burning games? Any kind of special discs or burner I need?

Vietnamese Crippler 07-11-2009 10:36 PM

DVD-R is best and burn as slowly as possible.

Savio 07-11-2009 10:38 PM

I heard updates might brick your wii if you have homebrew

OssMan 07-11-2009 11:52 PM

not homebrew channel. they will make it so you can't install it, but i think if you already have it then it won't do anything.

It took me a week to do mine, as I was on 4.0

I ended up downgrading the firmware first of all, there are ways to do it without the twilight hack

I'm on 4.0, so I'll have to do what you did I guess. I don't have Twilight, so I'll have to do it without it. Can you link me to the place where you got your info and instructions?

Lord-Of-Darkness 07-12-2009 03:26 PM

Can someone walk me through how to do this Homebrew thing? I'd love to play emulators on the Wii, but I need to be clued in on how to do it

Vietnamese Crippler 07-12-2009 05:07 PM

What system menu are you on? You can check in the settings.

Dave Youell 07-13-2009 02:13 PM

Ok I know how to, on any version, as this thing I got downgrades it

It took me ages, but I've got by far the simplest solution on how to make it work, but there's no way I'm putting it on here on the forum direct. As it's potentially bad for me legally

PM me if you want details, if your a new poster that has less than 1000 posts, forget about it, your not getting it.

G 07-13-2009 03:31 PM

OK COOL

My Wii is "modded" now, thanks to Dave Youell. Now I play the waiting game for the shits to download. :(

G 07-13-2009 05:05 PM

I don't know what to do. I burned Resort and tried to load it. It came up with the 002 error, which I researched and they said use the GeckoOS with 002 fix. I don't know how that works. I cleaned my sd card, and put the Gecko wad in a folder named wad, and just have the wad manager 1.4 .dol by itself in the root of the sd card. What am I doing wrong?

G 07-13-2009 07:04 PM

Okay Punch Out works fine. YouTubed like 423152 videos about 002 and finally found one with files and shit I could download. Used that, and have been fine. Resort is probably a bad iso or something. Gonna download a different copy.

G 07-13-2009 09:47 PM

Hey, I have a question. Can I go online with this stuff installed? I unplugged the ethernet cable to be safe. Can I still go online with my real games like Mario Kart? If not, I'm probably gonna sell all my games if I can get the burnt ones to work and replace them.

Vietnamese Crippler 07-13-2009 10:01 PM

You can go online with ANY game, retail or otherwise.

G 07-13-2009 10:46 PM

So it's pretty much just system and game updates I need to watch out for? Nintendo doesn't do ban waves like Microsoft?

Funky Fly 07-13-2009 11:30 PM

We never really go online or any of that shit with our shit. I mean, it's broken but I know a guy who knows a guy that can fix our shit and hard mod it for a little extra. Worth it, you think?

G 07-13-2009 11:35 PM

I'd say so. I don't go online either, just the Mario Kart back when it was released. I'm perfectly happy keeping it offline playing free games and shit.

Funky Fly 07-14-2009 12:01 AM

Fuck Nintendo online. Also, just noticed that like every other word in my last post was "shit"

Vietnamese Crippler 07-14-2009 12:09 AM

Was that a nigger moment?

Funky Fly 07-14-2009 01:38 AM

No, I just use shit as a catch-all noun far too often. My cuss word vocabulary needs expanding.

Savio 07-18-2009 02:14 AM

So wait is there a backup loader that plays games off your SD card? or you need the burnable DVD-R?

Funky Fly 07-18-2009 02:25 AM

My brother is getting his Wii fixed and modded afterall.

There are two softmods available: one will let you load ISOs off a USB hard drive and another that will let you run burned games.

V 07-18-2009 02:34 AM
