16 bit consoles were the pinnacle of gaming

srsly. i was thinking about it today. every other game these days is a FPS or some crappy sports franchise/guitar hero type thing they have absolutely milked to death. meanwhile back in the day you had a variety of things like mario and sonic and road rash and streets of rage and bomberman and mario kart and street fighter 2 etc. like bomberman, the premise was so simple but it was absolutely ridiculously fun to play.

Icess 08-12-2009 09:10 PM

RoXer 08-12-2009 09:15 PM

COme play Bomberman Live! with me on XBox Live!

Kalyx triaD 08-12-2009 09:16 PM

I think the 32/64bit era was a turning point in the industry.

Fignuts 08-12-2009 09:32 PM

What the hell are you talking about, there were hundreds of platforming and streets of rage style beat em up type games. Fighting games too.

It's not changed much really, it' just different genres now, that are getting the most type of games.

Kalyx triaD 08-12-2009 09:37 PM

I'd say there's more genres to choose from now than ever before.

8 Bit FTW.

The Jayman 08-13-2009 10:54 AM

i have to agree with mr knight on this. the original nes was the pinnacle of gaming b/c that system alone is what revolutionized the home console. it is the reason i got into gaming. plus i still have one and i play it simple games when i need a break from todays complex games.

DaveBrawl 08-13-2009 11:11 AM

I agree with Mask. I mean NES was great, but the SNES was the top of the mountain for me followed close by the PS1, it just hasn't held my attention as much since then. Each passing generation looks better and has more features we always wanted, but it seems somewhere along the way they stopped being as fun and original as they used to be. Granted you still get some great games, but for me it was at it's peak with the SNES and Genesis.

gatoconbotas 08-13-2009 11:45 AM

Do you think it might have something to do with our change in age with a combination of the change in systems?

I mean, when NES, SNES, and PS1 were huge we were all younger (obviously) and were enjoying childhood more...now, as an adult, I just don't have as much time for games anymore, so I feel like if I'm not playing some revolutionary game that is superbly awesome that I'm sorta wasting my valuable time...

Although I don't disagree that PS1 and SNES games were awesome (I have emulators and play them still) I feel as if our change in age has had a larger impact on the overall level of fun of games moreso than the lack of choice, genre, etc.

DaveBrawl 08-13-2009 11:55 AM

I think that has a lot to do with it, but I was still into video games when the PS2 came out and it was great fun for a while, but eventually all the games towards the end started focusing so much on graphics and started being so similar in theme that the fun started to fade, for me at least.

Funky Fly 08-13-2009 04:35 PM

I accept each generation of gaming for what it is. I can't put an order on which generation I think is better because within each generation there are a ton of games I love to death. They have different things that appeal to me, but I love them for what they are.

I have to agree, after the snes imo things just got overcomplicated, some of the cookie cutter shite thats churned out these days is laughable. All graphics and nothing else.

I still miss my Mega Drive, got stolen when our house got burgled one time:(

Kapoutman 08-13-2009 08:19 PM

SNES and N64 eras were my favorites. Most of of my top ten of all-time comes from these two systems.

Savio 08-13-2009 09:00 PM

I disagree gaming keeps getting better......except for monopolized genres (i.e. wrestling)

Oh, come the fuck on with that noise, man! THQ/Jakks/Yuke's definitely do not have a "monopoly" on the wrestling game genre...while they have been the main makers of recent wrestling games, they have in no way done anything to try and prevent new competition from entering the fray. I don't recall them ever trying to stop the release of TNA iMPACT!, which on it's own was pure crap...not that some of the more recent SvR games in the series haven't been utter shit themselves, but they've at least been better than what the competition has brought to the table thus far. I would be intrigued to see how well Midway (or whoever made iMPACT 1) can do with iMPACT 2, if it ever goes back into production again.

Anywho, for me the pinnacle of video gaming stands right now with the SNES vs. Genesis era of the early '90s...both companies kept pushing each other to outdo them by putting out awesome games like Sonic, Super Mario Kart, etc., etc. ...I mean, yeah, eventuallly SEGA lost focus and started putting out utter crap while trying to promote 10,000 other game systems and add-ons and shit nobody wanted, but that cycle was probably one of the most groundbreaking ever. It should be interesting to see how today's triple-threat era turns out between PS3, Wii and 360.

Sovereigntywillpr 08-18-2009 04:38 PM

well I think he ment that whom-ever has the WWE Licence has an automatic advantage to monopolize the market.

I agree with the age thing...
