Fifa or Winning Eleven

The last game I bought was WE 07, so I'm due for a new one. And a few years ago, it would have been obvious to grab the new WE. But from what I've heard, last year's Fifa was better.

Nothing about WE's gameplay has been revealed so far, so I don't know if it's going to beat out fifa in that department. Fifa's new 360 ball controls are supposedly really good, according to previews. Master League in WE is ridiculous this year tho, with youth teams and sponsor transactions.

WHAT TO DO?!

G 09-16-2009 07:28 PM

Last game I played was Fifa 2001. I'm due for another as well.

D Mac 09-16-2009 07:42 PM

Madden 2010

Funky Fly 09-16-2009 07:56 PM

FIFA 06 was nice.
FIFA 07 was excellent.
FIFA 08 was disappointing (major improvements, but glitched and controls were fucked).
FIFA 09 was godly.
FIFA 10 seems unnecessary based on how good 09 is. Will probably be great though.

Mike the Metal Ed 09-16-2009 08:01 PM

If you're just looking for a football game to play, then as Funky has said, FIFA 09 is an excellent game, so pick that up cheap pre-owned.

If you want an up to date game, FIFA 10 seems great from what I've played of it, but I'm not a PES/WE fan, so I couldn't give you a fair opinion on it.

CSL 09-16-2009 08:22 PM

Pro Evo every single time. 08 was pretty bad (a lot of naysayers opinion seems to be still based on that with it being the first next gen Evo and the first real step up from FIFA), 09 back up to their standards and 10 seems on course to kill it (since you mentioned 360 control, Evo has that too)

FIFA isn't bad, hell of a lot better than it used to be but it's still pretty unresponsive. Only thing they have over Evo is more stable online play (pretty terrible effort from Konami but apparently that's fixed this year) which seems to sway a lot of opinions and the multitude of licenses, which again some people can't do without (give me edit mode anyday)

FIFA has always been about gloss, licensing and gimmicks. Evo is football. New demo is out tomorrow

Danny Electric 09-16-2009 09:22 PM

I'm more of a Pro Evo fan, played Fifa 09 and didn't see what the fuss was about.
I've owned every Pro Evo so far and I don't see that changing.

Emperor Smeat 09-16-2009 09:27 PM

Should be interesting this year since FIFA 10 got pushed back a few weeks for US release and makes it close to the Pro Evo 2010 release date.

Is the Wii version of Pro Evo 2010 still the weird March 2011 date? Never understood why they waited till end of soccer/football season to release the wii version.

I suppose it's impossible for your brain to process the fact that I already own a madden game as well, so I won't say anything more.

Fignuts 09-16-2009 10:22 PM

Yeah, like was the overall gameplay of fifa what pushed it over evo? Because if the physics of the ball and player movement is still better in evo like it's always been, then I'll stick with that, even if everything else is better in fifa. For years, no matter how much better fifa has gotten evo still feels more like the actual game. And for someone who's played the game for 20+ years, that's more important than anything else.

But I havn't played the last few years games, so I don't know which is better in that respect.

Requiem 09-16-2009 10:45 PM

Pro Evo 09 is pretty great. FIFA 10 looks decent though, but then again so does Pro Evo 10.

Fignuts 09-16-2009 10:52 PM

I think I played the fifa 08 demo, and it still felt arcadish, and robotic, as opposed to the natural feel of evo.

Funky Fly 09-17-2009 02:04 AM

Yeah, probably gonna get PES/WE 07 for cheap to try it out.

Bad Company 09-17-2009 02:49 AM

I play PES, but was really impressed with Fifa 09. Still sticking with PES though.

Ogen 09-17-2009 11:55 AM

Played both the demos for the new ones, Fifa is class again, PES is woeful again.

Its a real shame because I was always a PES fan but Fifa 09 blew it out of the water and having just played the PES 10 demo just beat Liverpool 3-0. 2 of my goals came from just running at Reina when the ball was near him only for him to just let my strikers rob it and score. The other goal came when I made of balls of trying to chip him and sent it straight into his chest, only for it to go through his chest and Messi to basically slide around the outline of Reina without breaking his stride and tap it in.

Then we had Torres attempt a dive and get a booking for them which would have been nice to see had any of my defenders been tackling him at the time, basically just threw himself to the deck with noone near him when he could have scored.

Fifa all the way, its just better in every department these days and PES also manage to fuck up the online aspect every year if that appeals to you with horrible lag times and general shitness in comparison to Fifa which can manage 20 players playing the one game if you want.

And just to confirm this yeah Fifa have moved WAY ahead in representing an actual match by now.

I think you need to up your level, I've played like 8 games now on Top Player and that stuff just doesn't happen.

Anyways, another learning curve for this year's Evo. Controlling the ball is no longer as simple as holding sprint from any direction and away you go. The 360 direction stuff is nice, makes the game feel really open and is if anything can happen. Pain in the arse to start with though adapting wise, it's all about timing, how much space you have, how good the player is, who you're against etc. A lot more manual movement involved as well.

Build up play is definitely the way to go on this years version, attack attack attack/get the ball and run is no longer the best form of attack, passing around, waiting for spaces to open up is pretty much essential.

It's easily the best looking Evo of all, kills off FIFA, especially when it comes to faces and kits. Crowds are better too.

That's not to say it's perfect. Keepers still have their moments, the occasional pass/header/touch etc will go in a non-sensical direction nowhere near where you're aiming, teammates AI is baffling at times, still feels a bit rough. However, every single year there's noticable difference between the demo and finished version of the game so I'm pretty confident.

Fignuts 09-17-2009 04:11 PM

Dunno, just played the demos, and fifa feels a little better. That said, neither one seems as natural as WE 07, so I might end up just sticking with that. They both feel stiffer and more arcadey, although the new PES moreso. What the fuck happened to this series?

CSL 09-17-2009 04:12 PM

lol @ FIFA is class again btw, it's the exact same game, even on the hardest levels it's 'pass, pass, pass, pass, bottom corner'. The only thing I wish Konami would incorporate is choice of penalty types (blast, place, cocky chip) instead of penalty stances.

Cool King 09-17-2009 04:19 PM

I haven't had a football game in years.

My last football game was FIFA 04. :$

I think I might pick up FIFA 09 pre-owned or something or I just might get FIFA 10 when it's released.

I'm more of a FIFA man myself, though I have played Pro Evo games before but I just didn't like them as much as the FIFA games. :-\

I was getting pretty annoyed the first few games I played so I agree with you on the stiffer part, I'd say it's far from arcadey though (last years definitely had a sense of that to it) I've found the more I play, the more you get used to the movement, the more natural it feels etc (it's still frustrating me in parts and will continue to I think with how different it is when on the ball)

But yeah, they still aren't up to Evo 3/5/WE 7/9 standards, those are the best football games ever. As long as the kinks are ironed out, it should be the closest yet.

If you prefered FIFA over Pro Evo back then, you <strike> should probably never play a football game ever again :p</strike> may not like FIFA today (or Pro Evo) Those FIFA's were a mess but very accessible whilst Evo was in it's prime at that time. Nowadays FIFA is a lot better than it used to be (and a lot more sim-Evo-esque)

Funky Fly 09-17-2009 06:04 PM

I played FIFA 98 and World Cup 98 back on the N64 and loved them, but being a kid at the time I never had the cash to get them annually. Then I tried FIFA 2002 and never played again till FIFA 06. Horrifically bad game, 2002.

Penner 09-17-2009 08:43 PM

Pro Evo every year.

I do not enjoy FIFA as much. That's all there is too it.

Hanso Amore 09-22-2009 11:17 AM

Whatever. you are all fags.

Fifa is way better, not to mention the Manager Mode is the fucking tits.

Fignuts 09-22-2009 11:29 AM

Fifa is better now, but it still can't hold a candle to WE 07's gameplay. Maybe 08 is better. I dunno when WE's gameplay started to go down the shitter, but yeah.

Disturbed316 09-22-2009 11:47 AM

I was a PES/WE fan for years abut 06 was such a let down and just feel in love with fifa and haven't looked back. Having played the demos of this years versions of both games, I can safely say that I wont be buying PES ever again.

Impeccable 09-22-2009 12:26 PM

I've got to say, I was on the fence until FIFA 09. Played that and the PES counterpart and FIFA just felt...right. IMO, FIFA was the better game last year.

I've played the FIFA 10 demo, and my initial thoughts are;

Physics - The physics of both players and ball is good. I used to get annoyed on earlier games when two players would run into each other at full pelt they'd bump chests, and only my player would go down. Very different now. You can't just keep your finger on the sprint button and press X for pressure as you'll give away a free kick. Ball physics are good, specifically where the ball goes if it hits an obstacle.

Counter Attacking - This is a good and bad point. Good in that when your opposition is pushing forward, counter attack can tear them to shreds, as they leave one man back. Bad in that I can just see every goal coming this way. I'll have to do some tweaking of my tactics to ensure I don't leave too much space. Also, once again, play against any team with pace, and they'll kill you on the counter attack. You won't catch them, so might as well give up running after them.

Goalkeepers - No longer super human or super retarded. "smart AI"

Crossing - Biggest improvement for me. I can drop a cross onto forward's head with ease, rather than the cross dropping into the opposite channel.

Vivid colours - While it might seem like a plus, the colours being so vivid makes it look more cartoon-y...like we'd gone back to FIFA 2003/4/5

I haven't yet played the PES 2010 demo, so can't really rate one above the other.

Fabien Barthez 09-23-2009 09:30 AM

Fifa10 looks really good. I think the demo is awesome. I like how there is 360 degree control, and that everything is a little more fluid.

I think with the counter attacking, your opinion might change if you play with the non-5* teams. It is hardly any different to countering with Messi on 09.

Impeccable 09-23-2009 12:07 PM

To be fair, I usuall play with 2 and a half star teams, but when you play online, EVERYONE will be choosing ManYoo, Barca, Inter, Real Madrid, liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal. Can't really choose a two and a half star team against them.

Emperor Smeat 09-23-2009 02:24 PM

I think EA said earlier this year online for FIFA 10 going to match up games based on the star level team you choose. So if you choose a 2.5 star team, server searches for another 2.5 star or as close to it as possible player.

This, pretty much.

The Pro Evo demo feels like playing in treacle. And don't give me that bullshit "the final game will be different". Will it fuck. That's the whole point of A DEMO.

Excellent, thats a big boost actually. Got really sick of every game basically being sprint with Messi or Ronaldo.

XL 09-23-2009 07:54 PM

Hmmmmmmm, I might have to give both a try this year.

I still play PES09 as the Become A Legend mode is awesome. The replay value there is incredible, so much so that I've only played half a season of Master League. From what I hear FIFA's equivalant only lasted a 3 year span. Has that changed?

Online isn't a factor for me as I'm not online currently. Shirts, badges and names are all well and good but not totally necessary.

Guess it just comes down to Become A Legend/Pro!?

Emperor Smeat 09-27-2009 10:17 PM

Not sure if its true yet but apparently FIFA 10 on Xbox 360 going to have an achievement for quitting 5 games on Xbox Live.

Bad loser 0g
select to quit & forfeit 5 xboxlive matches when losing

Disturbed316 09-28-2009 04:53 AM

They need to do something other than 0g achievements for quiters, hate those fuckers.

Danny Electric 09-28-2009 05:29 AM

Played the Fifa 10 demo last night and enjoyed it. I haven't played the Pro demo yet but I haven't heard good things about it.
Me and Lee (XL) were talking to a worker in Game the other day and he slated the Pro demo, so I'm guessing this may be the first Pro that I never own.

Disturbed316 09-28-2009 04:26 PM

Wont actually be getting FIFA 10 untill I've clocked up the 50 hours on 09, got about 800 or so minutes left to go, I want my proper gamerscore back

IGN have a review up and gave FIFA 10 9.3.

I played a few games on the demo but then realised I can't really compare to last year's Pro cos I only really played Become A Legend mode and the style of play is totally different.

Seemed like a decent game. Scored some ridiculously simple goals though. :-\

CSL 09-28-2009 04:40 PM

I really like Evo demo. Quite a bit different compared to last year in terms of AI, teamplay etc. And what difficulty were you playing on? Top player is pretty much the only way to go otherwise the CPU's gonna do some daft stuff to make it easier
