Flair and the top rope

So I got the 'Death of WCW' DVD and I watched a match from like 1994 involving Flair and Hogan. In the match Flair goes to the top rope and Heenan says something like "Ric, that isn't a good idea." It got me wondering. Was Flair going to the top rope only to be thrown off every time like some huge running joke for 15-20 years or something? I know later on in Flair's career Lawler made a joke out of it but has that been a long time "LOL" thing that I missed?

Also, when was the first time he ever hit it? I remember people flipping out one time he hit in on RAW.

Yes, it was a typical Ric Flair spot for many years. This explains why you never got jokes about this.

Well, my question was more about when it started being recognized as a running joke. However, thank you for showing me you have amazing asshat potential

Define 'asshat'.

The only time I can really remember him hitting it was in his Intercontinental Championship match against Carlito.

I'm not 100% sure if it was actually for the title or not but I remember him hitting it on Carlito anyway.

He hit it against HBK at Wrestlemania.

When Flair is suppose to be a heel he gets thrown off the turnbuckle. When Flair is a Face he lands the move.

This has happened for most of his career.

The first time I remember him hitting it was a crossbody on Harley Race to win the title in 1983.

He hit a double axe-handle on Sting during the final match of WCW I believe.
