That may be true, but even with that being the case, it should come as no surprise that a save file is in no way an absolute requirement for playing ME2, and the people behind the game have even said as much, stating that the game will have a way of compensating for profiles without a ME1 save file.

Granted, I kept mine around, as I'm intrigued to see how the tie-in to ME2 from my ME1 save file will work, and have been ever since I heard about the feature. However, I'm sure there's probably others who either never played ME1, or don't have any interest in playing it now that ME2 is out. It's a matter of deciding how you want your ME2 story experience to play out, really.
