And yet, you didn't make a real point. So perhaps you could save your pedagogy for some time when you actually have a point. And a pulpit.
Though the term "spiritual successor" is douchey enough for you, it's largely dicing hairs in the same sense that one might argue a compact disc isn't really a compact disc, it's a digital information distribution device. It doesn't hurt that it's only relatively recently these titles have stopped being referred to as "spiritual sequels" and only then to differentiate between different types of sequels.
